Hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures

    Get PDF
We have calculated hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures taking quantum well band-mixing effects into account. Our results indicate that for sufficiently high hole temperatures and concentrations, band-mixing effects reduce average hole tunneling times from the pure heavy hole value to values comparable to electron tunneling times in the same structure. For very low hole temperatures and concentrations, band mixing is less important and average hole tunneling times should approach the pure heavy hole value. These results provide an explanation for previously reported experimental results in which electrons and holes were found to be characterized by very similar tunneling times

An asymptotic analysis of supersonic reacting mixing layers

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to present an asymptotic analysis of the laminar mixing of the simultaneous chemical reaction between parallel supersonic streams of two reacting species. The study is based on a one-step irreversible Arrhenius reaction and on large activation energy asymptotics. Essentially it extends the work of Linan and Crespo to include the effect of free shear and Mach number on the ignition regime, the deflagration regime and the diffusion flame regime. It is found that the effective parameter is the product of the characteristic Mach number and a shear parameter

Machiavelli’s Walls: The Legacy of Realism in International Relations Theory

    Get PDF
In this paper we argue that Niccolò Machiavelli has little to do with Realism in International Relations theory. By concentrating, as Machaivelli did, on the walls that define political relations—both inside and outside the polity—we find his insights deeply rooted in the specific political contexts of Sixteenth century Italy. Others may wish to generalize from them, but Machiavelli did not. In fact, as we show, Machiavelli was mindful of the difficulties of generalizing about walls and acknowledged the dangers political actors faced in navigating between the internal and external walls of the polity. We examine the geopolitical contours of Machiavelli’s walls and seek to demonstrate how morality is present in these historical spaces. In contrast to Realists, Machiavelli was ready and willing to make ethical judgments. We argue that theorists of international politics should exercise care in reaching for Machiavelli as the iconic thinker for making sense of anarchy in world politics. This article concludes by suggesting that the ideology of Machiavellianism has obscured deeper understanding of the particular contexts of Machiavelli’s own world

Radio detection of H2O in comet Bradfield (1974b)

Results of observations of comet Bradfield using the Haystack telescope are summarized with emphasis on the detection of the 1.35 cm emission line of water in the comet. The excitation of water and methyl cyanide in comets is briefly considered

    Curved cap corrugated sheet

    Get PDF
The report describes a structure for a strong, lightweight corrugated sheet. The sheet is planar or curved and includes a plurality of corrugation segments, each segment being comprised of a generally U-shaped corrugation with a part-cylindrical crown and cap strip, and straight side walls and with secondary corrugations oriented at right angles to said side walls. The cap strip is bonded to the crown and the longitudinal edge of said cap strip extends beyond edge at the intersection between said crown and said side walls. The high strength relative to weight of the structure makes it desirable for use in aircraft or spacecraft

Finding the Pion in the Chiral Random Matrix Vacuum

    Get PDF
The existence of a Goldstone boson is demonstrated in chiral random matrix theory. After determining the effective coupling and calculating the scalar and pseudoscalar propagators, a random phase approximation summation reveals the massless pion and massive sigma modes expected whenever chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, revte

Two-band modeling of narrow band gap and interband tunneling devices

    Get PDF
A two-band transfer matrix method has been developed to study tunneling currents in narrow gap and interband tunnel structures. This relatively simple model gives good agreement with recently reported experimental results for InAs/AlSb/InAs/AlSb/InAs double-barrier heterostructures and InAs/AlSb/GaSb/AlSb/InAs resonant interband tunneling devices, and should be useful in the design of new interband tunneling devices

Random Walkers with Shrinking Steps in d-Dimensions and Their Long Term Memory

We study, in d-dimensions, the random walker with geometrically shrinking step sizes at each hop. We emphasize the integrated quantities such as expectation values, cumulants and moments rather than a direct study of the probability distribution. We develop a 1/d expansion technique and study various correlations of the first step to the position as ti me goes to infinity. We also show and substantiate with a study of the cumulants that to order 1/d the system admits a continuum counterpart equation which can be obtained with a generalization of the ordinary technique to obtain the continuum limit. We also advocate that this continuum counterpart equation, which is nothing but the ordinary diffusion equation with a diffusion constant decaying exponentially in continuous time, captures all the qualitative aspects of t he discrete system and is often a good starting point for quantitative approximations

Role of acoustics in flame/vortex interactions

    Get PDF
The role of acoustics in flame/vortex interactions is examined via asymptotic analysis and numerical simulation. The model consists of a one-step, irreversible Arrhenius reaction between initially unmixed species occupying adjacent half-planes which are allowed to mix and react by convection and diffusion in the presence of an acoustic field or a time-varying pressure field of small amplitude. The main emphasis is on the influence of the acoustics on the ignition time and flame structure as a function of vortex Reynolds number and initial temperature differences of the reactants

Ignition and structure of a laminar diffusion flame in the field of a vortex

    Get PDF
The distortion of flames in flows with vortical motion is examined via asymptotic analysis and numerical simulation. The model consists of a constant density, one step, irreversible Arrhenius reaction between initially unmixed species occupying adjacent half-planes which are then allowed to mix and react in the presence of a vortex. The evolution in time of the temperature and mass fraction fields is followed. Emphasis is placed on the ignition time and location as a function of vortex Reynolds number and initial temperature differences of the reacting species. The study brings out the influence of the vortex on the chemical reaction. In all phases, good agreement is observed between asymptotic analysis and the full numerical solution of the model equations
