Buoyancy-driven inflow to a relic cold core: the gas belt in radio galaxy 3C 386
We report measurements from an XMM-Newton observation of the low-excitation
radio galaxy 3C 386. The study focusses on an X-ray-emitting gas belt, which
lies between and orthogonal to the radio lobes of 3C 386 and has a mean
temperature of keV, cooler than the extended group atmosphere.
The gas in the belt shows temperature structure with material closer to the
surrounding medium being hotter than gas closer to the host galaxy. We suggest
that this gas belt involves a `buoyancy-driven inflow' of part of the group-gas
atmosphere where the buoyant rise of the radio lobes through the ambient medium
has directed an inflow towards the relic cold core of the group.
Inverse-Compton emission from the radio lobes is detected at a level consistent
with a slight suppression of the magnetic field below the equipartition value.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Stage-specific vertical distribution of Alaska plaice (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus) eggs in the eastern Bering Sea
The stage-specific distribution of Alaska plaice (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus) eggs in the southeastern
Bering Sea was examined with collections made in mid-May in
2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006. Eggs in the early stages of development were found primarily offshore of the 40-m
isobath. Eggs in the middle and late stages of development were found inshore and offshore of the 40-m isobath. There was some evidence that early-stage eggs occur deeper in the
water column than late-stage eggs, although year-to-year variability in that trend was observed. Most eggs were in the later stages of development; therefore the majority of spawning is estimated to have occurred a few weeks before collection—probably April—and may be highly synchronized
among local spawning areas. Results indicate that sampling with continuous underway fish egg collectors(CUFES) should be supplemented with sampling of the entire water column to ensure adequate samples of all egg stages of Alaska plaice. Data presented offer new information on the stage-dependent horizontal and vertical distribution of Alaska plaice eggs in the Bering Sea and provide further evidence that the early life history stages of this species are vulnerable
to near-surface variations in hydrographical conditions and climate forcing
Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Analysis of the atmospheric revitalization pressure control subsystem
The results of the Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis/Critical Items List (FMEA/CIL) are presented. The IOA approach features a top-down analysis of the hardware to determine failure modes, criticality, and potential critical items. To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. The independent analysis results corresponding to the Orbiter Atmospheric Revitalization and Pressure Control Subsystem (ARPCS) are documented. The ARPCS hardware was categorized into the following subdivisions: (1) Atmospheric Make-up and Control (including the Auxiliary Oxygen Assembly, Oxygen Assembly, and Nitrogen Assembly); and (2) Atmospheric Vent and Control (including the Positive Relief Vent Assembly, Negative Relief Vent Assembly, and Cabin Vent Assembly). The IOA analysis process utilized available ARPCS hardware drawings and schematics for defining hardware assemblies, components, and hardware items. Each level of hardware was evaluated and analyzed for possible failure modes and effects. Criticality was assigned based upon the severity of the effect for each failure mode
Alcohol and healthy ageing: a challenge for alcohol policy
Objectives:
This paper presents findings of a qualitative study of older people's use of alcohol during retirement and identifies ways that an improved understanding of older people's drinking can inform policy approaches to alcohol and active and healthy ageing.
Study design:
Qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted with a self-selecting sample of retired people.
Methods:
Participants were recruited from three geographical locations in the West of Scotland. A quota sampling design was used to ensure a broad spread of participants in terms of socio-economic position, age and gender. In total 40 participants were interviewed and the data analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke's (2006) approach.
Results:
Amongst those who used alcohol, it was most often framed in terms of pleasure, relaxation, socialising and as a way to mark the passage of time. Alcohol was often associated with social occasions and interactions both in private and in public spaces. There were also many examples of the use of imposed routines to limit alcohol use and of a decreasing volume of alcohol being consumed as participants aged. This suggests that older people are often active in constructing what they regard as ‘healthier’ routines around alcohol use. However, processes and circumstances associated with ageing can lead to risk of social isolation and/or increased alcohol consumption. Such processes include retirement from paid work and other ‘biographical disruptions’ such as caring for a partner, bereavement and/or loss of social networks.
Conclusions:
These findings highlight processes that can result in changes in drinking habits and routines. Whilst these processes can be associated with a reduction or cessation of alcohol use as people age, they can also be associated with increased risk of harmful alcohol consumption. Fractured or disrupted routines, particularly those associated with bereavement or the burden of caring responsibilities, through increasing the risk of loneliness and isolation, can construct increased risk of harmful alcohol consumption. These findings reframe the pathway of risk between ageing and alcohol-related harm by highlighting the vulnerability to harmful drinking practices brought by fracture or sudden change of routine. The findings point to a role for public health in supporting the reconstruction of routines that provide structure and meaning and can be used to actively manage the benefits and harms associated with drinking
Dynamic RKKY interaction between magnetic moments in graphene nanoribbons
Graphene has been identified as a promising material with numerous
applications, particularly in spintronics. In this paper we investigate the
peculiar features of spin excitations of magnetic units deposited on graphene
nanoribbons and how they can couple through a dynamical interaction mediated by
spin currents. We examine in detail the spin lifetimes and identify a pattern
caused by vanishing density of states sites in pristine ribbons with armchair
borders. Impurities located on these sites become practically invisible to the
interaction, but can be made accessible by a gate voltage or doping. We also
demonstrate that the coupling between impurities can be turned on or off using
this characteristic, which may be used to control the transfer of information
in transistor-like devices.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Electronic effects in high-energy radiation damage in iron
Electronic effects are believed to be important in high--energy radiation
damage processes where high electronic temperature is expected, yet their
effects are not currently understood. Here, we perform molecular dynamics
simulations of high-energy collision cascades in -iron using the
coupled two-temperature molecular dynamics (2T-MD) model that incorporates both
effects of electronic stopping and electron-ion interaction. We subsequently
compare it with the model employing the electronic stopping only, and find
several interesting novel insights. The 2T-MD results in both decreased damage
production in the thermal spike and faster relaxation of the damage at short
times. Notably, the 2T-MD model gives a similar amount of the final damage at
longer times, which we interpret to be the result of two competing effects:
smaller amount of short-time damage and shorter time available for damage

Island in the Sea: The prospects and impacts of an offshore wind power hub in the North Sea
Europe's offshore wind capacity is increasing rapidly, with larger turbines installed further from shore. TenneT proposed an innovative concept, the North Sea Wind Power Hub, in which several farms are connected to an artificial island which has interconnection to surrounding countries. This aims to reduce overall costs, but studies have so far evaluated hypothetical designs rather than the specific system operators’ proposal, and focused primarily on construction costs rather than ongoing system-wide impacts. Here we develop a bottom-up capital cost estimate to compare the Power Hub with conventional point-to-point connection for offshore wind farms. We quantify its consequential impacts on regional electricity prices, the value of wind generation, fossil fuel generation and carbon emissions in 2030 using a pan-European electricity market model. We find that the Power Hub is cheaper if more than 10 GW of wind is built, as the avoided cost of multiple converter platforms offsets the cost of building an artificial island. It has profound impacts on electricity markets across Europe, especially in Britain and Ireland if they gain more interconnection to continental Europe. This impacts the economic viability of wind and gas power stations particularly, and saves 10Mt CO2 per year through reduced curtailment
