Development of Finite Element Code for Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Slabs

    Get PDF
A nonlinear finite element code has been developed to suite the analysis of normal and high strength concrete slabs. The computer program was built up using two computer languages, where the program interface part was coded in Visual-Basic language, while the main part was coded using FORTRAN language. A software called NLFEAS (Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis of Slabs) was developed to predicate and study the three dimensional response of reinforced concrete slabs of different grades, variables and boundary conditions under monotonically increasing loads. Using symmetry, a segment representing one quarter of the slab was considered in the analysis which was modeled using 20-node isoparametric brick elements and a 27-integration rule (3*3*3). Proper numerical material models for cracked concrete were incorporated in the analysis. The efficiency and accuracy of the developed code was verified through comparison with available test data, which showed good agreement. The effects of some finite element parameters such as mesh refinement and integral rule were also investigated

Service-oriented flexible and interoperable assessment: towards a standardised e-assessment system

    Get PDF
Free-text answers assessment has been a field of interest during the last 50 years. Several free-text answers assessment tools underpinned by different techniques have been developed. In most cases, the complexity of the underpinned techniques has caused those tools to be designed and developed as stand-alone tools. The rationales behind using computers to assist learning assessment are mainly to save time and cost, as well as to reduce staff workload. However, utilising free-text answers assessment tools separately form the learning environment may increase the staff workload and increase the complexity of the assessment process. Therefore, free-text answers scorers have to have a flexible design to be integrated within the context of the e-assessment system architectures taking advantages of software-as-a-service architecture. Moreover, flexible and interoperable e-assessment architecture has to be utilised in order to facilitate this integration. This paper discusses the importance of flexible and interoperable e-assessment. Moreover, it proposes a service-oriented flexible and interoperable architecture for futuristic e-assessment systems. Nevertheless, it shows how such architecture can foster the e-assessment process in general and the free-text answers assessment in particular

Abstract: Over the past decades, studies investigating the concept of national identity within educational settings have grown increasingly prevalent and in demand. Ergo, the following study has set out to examine the perceptions of EFL teachers regarding the importance of incorporating national identity within newly developed English textbooks used in public middle and secondary schools in Algeria. The researchers elicited the views of 112 Algerian teachers during the second semester of the academic year 2017-2018 regarding the efficiency of home-grown textbooks in teaching national and local matters as well as their role in helping Algerian students foster their intercultural competence. Overall, the study argued that Algerian EFL teachers believe that textbooks have a disproportionate and unequal balance between national and international identities, and that it does not adequately teach and impart a sufficient understanding of the Algerian national identity.Respondents also believed that defining the Algerian national identity was quite a perplex and confusing matter that often instigates students’ disinterest to learn the language. Findings also indicated that although nearly two thirds of the respondents stated that national identity was not an important facet of the EFL education, they further contended that it should begin to be taught as early as middle school and be reinforced and later developed through secondary education, particularly through writing exercises and classes.

New extensions of Rayleigh distribution based on inverted-Weibull and Weibull distributions

    Get PDF
The Rayleigh distribution was proposed in the fields of acoustics and optics by lord Rayleigh. It has wide applications in communication theory, such as description of instantaneous peak power of received radio signals, i.e. study of vibrations and waves. It has also been used for modeling of wave propagation, radiation, synthetic aperture radar images, and lifetime data in engineering and clinical studies. This work proposes two new extensions of the Rayleigh distribution, namely the Rayleigh inverted-Weibull (RIW) and the Rayleigh Weibull (RW) distributions. Several fundamental properties are derived in this study, these include reliability and hazard functions, moments, quantile function, random number generation, skewness, and kurtosis. The maximum likelihood estimators for the model parameters of the two proposed models are also derived along with the asymptotic confidence intervals. Two real data sets in communication systems and clinical trials are analyzed to illustrate the concept of the proposed extensions. The results demonstrated that the proposed extensions showed better fitting than other extensions and competing models
