    Spatial Patterns in Forest Understories: Relationships to Overstory Thinning Intensity and Understory Plant Diversity

    Amount, spatial distribution, and species composition of understory plant communities have been shown to respond to changes in overstory structure. While response of the amount and composition of understory vegetation to thinning has been investigated in several ecosystems, spatial distributions have received less attention. We investigated spatial statistical techniques to examine associations of patch size of clonal shrubs and annual ruderals as they relate to overstory conditions after thinnings. We assessed the interpretation of empirical semivariograms in describing spatial pattern and whether semivariogram parameters can be useful when comparing impacts of different thinning regimes. We simulated vegetation patterns to test the ability of empirical semivariograms to describe patch sizes and suggest a nonparametric semivariogram range parameter as a metric of patch size. We applied results from the simulations to data from a long-term thinning study, in which intensity and spatial patterns of thinnings varied. We used range parameters from semivariograms of percent cover to compare response of patch sizes among thinning treatments and life forms. Initial results indicated that empirical semivariograms quantified both patch sizes and distance between patches. Nonparametric semivariogram estimates of patch size showed differences among thinning treatments, suggesting that spatial patterns of overstory conditions are influencing spatial distributions of understory vegetation. Patches of selected clonal shrubs were smallest in the treatment with spatially variable thinnings. Overall patch size of clonal shrubs was less strongly associated with thinning treatments than patch size of annual ruderals, likely reflecting differences in mobility between species that mainly regenerate by sprouting versus seeds. We conclude that spatial pattern of understory vegetation is responsive to thinning treatments and empirical semivariograms can provide useful information for developing silvicultural prescriptions

    Fixed Price Approximability of the Optimal Gain From Trade

    Bilateral trade is a fundamental economic scenario comprising a strategically acting buyer and seller, each holding valuations for the item, drawn from publicly known distributions. A mechanism is supposed to facilitate trade between these agents, if such trade is beneficial. It was recently shown that the only mechanisms that are simultaneously DSIC, SBB, and ex-post IR, are fixed price mechanisms, i.e., mechanisms that are parametrised by a price p, and trade occurs if and only if the valuation of the buyer is at least p and the valuation of the seller is at most p. The gain from trade is the increase in welfare that results from applying a mechanism; here we study the gain from trade achievable by fixed price mechanisms. We explore this question for both the bilateral trade setting, and a double auction setting where there are multiple buyers and sellers. We first identify a fixed price mechanism that achieves a gain from trade of at least 2/r times the optimum, where r is the probability that the seller's valuation does not exceed the buyer's valuation. This extends a previous result by McAfee. Subsequently, we improve this approximation factor in an asymptotic sense, by showing that a more sophisticated rule for setting the fixed price results in an expected gain from trade within a factor O(log(1/r)) of the optimal gain from trade. This is asymptotically the best approximation factor possible. Lastly, we extend our study of fixed price mechanisms to the double auction setting defined by a set of multiple i.i.d. unit demand buyers, and i.i.d. unit supply sellers. We present a fixed price mechanism that achieves a gain from trade that achieves for all epsilon > 0 a gain from trade of at least (1-epsilon) times the expected optimal gain from trade with probability 1 - 2/e^{#T epsilon^2 /2}, where #T is the expected number of trades resulting from the double auction

    The purpose of this paper is to describe the educational and practice utilities of establishing Surgical Skills Centres. The paper also defines significant obstacles to the establishment of such centres in Sub- Saharan Africa. In 1996, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada responded to the evolving roles and obligations of medical specialists by implementing a framework of core competencies called the “CanMEDS Roles” which define surgeons as medical experts, communicators, collaborators, managers, health advocates, scholars and professionals. A key competency expected of the medical expert is the demonstration of proficiency in procedural skills2

    Significant Phonon Drag Enables High Power Factor in the AlGaN/GaN Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

    In typical thermoelectric energy harvesters and sensors, the Seebeck effect is caused by diffusion of electrons or holes in a temperature gradient. However, the Seebeck effect can also have a phonon drag component, due to momentum exchange between charge carriers and lattice phonons, which is more difficult to quantify. Here, we present the first study of phonon drag in the AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We find that phonon drag does not contribute significantly to the thermoelectric behavior of devices with ~100 nm GaN thickness, which suppress the phonon mean free path. However, when the thickness is increased to ~1.2 ÎŒ\mum, up to 32% (88%) of the Seebeck coefficient at 300 K (50 K) can be attributed to the drag component. In turn, the phonon drag enables state-of-the-art thermoelectric power factor in the thicker GaN film, up to ~40 mW m−1^{-1} K−2^{-2} at 50 K. By measuring the thermal conductivity of these AlGaN/GaN films, we show that the magnitude of the phonon drag can increase even when the thermal conductivity decreases. Decoupling of thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient could enable important advancements in thermoelectric power conversion with devices based on 2DEGs

    Complexity of Manipulative Actions When Voting with Ties

    Most of the computational study of election problems has assumed that each voter's preferences are, or should be extended to, a total order. However in practice voters may have preferences with ties. We study the complexity of manipulative actions on elections where voters can have ties, extending the definitions of the election systems (when necessary) to handle voters with ties. We show that for natural election systems allowing ties can both increase and decrease the complexity of manipulation and bribery, and we state a general result on the effect of voters with ties on the complexity of control.Comment: A version of this paper will appear in ADT-201
