    Measurement of the Low-Energy Antideuteron Inelastic Cross Section

    Systems toxicology to advance human and environmental hazard assessment : A roadmap for advanced materials

    Ideally, a Systems Toxicology (ST) approach is aimed at by (eco)toxicologists, i.e. a multidisciplinary area incorporating classical toxicological concepts with omics technologies, and the understanding of this through computational data sciences, chemistry, mathematics, and physics modelling. As outlined in sev-eral public reports (e.g. from ECHA-European Chemical Agency and EFSA-European Food Safety Authority), the way forward in the coming years in Europe is to integrate New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) (in-cluding omics technologies) into hazard and hence risk assessment (RA). Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) describe a sequence of events in response to stress, from the molecular initiating event until an adverse outcome, which is relevant to RA or regulatory decision-making. AOPs are one of the facilitators to integrate mechanistic data into RA, but it is urgent to increase the inclusion of the vast mechanistic knowledge available, especially for the RA of novel smart and advanced materials (AdMa) with multi-functional characteristics. There are still many challenges to the routine usage of NAMs, e.g. omics-based information. Here, we summarise the current state of the art of ST, the benefits of human and environ-mental health cross knowledge and the available methods and output. The importance of this area has been highlighted for many years but is even more pressing in the context of AdMa. Furthermore, we outline the challenges and suggest recommendations for future implementation.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Distributed affective space represents multiple emotion categories across the human brain

    The functional organization of human emotion systems as well as their neuroanatomical basis and segregation in the brain remains unresolved. Here, we used pattern classification and hierarchical clustering to characterize the organization of a wide array of emotion categories in the human brain. We induced 14 emotions (6 'basic', e.g. fear and anger; and 8 'non-basic', e.g. shame and gratitude) and a neutral state using guided mental imagery while participants' brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Twelve out of 14 emotions could be reliably classified from the haemodynamic signals. All emotions engaged a multitude of brain areas, primarily in midline cortices including anterior and posterior cingulate gyri and precuneus, in subcortical regions, and in motor regions including cerebellum and premotor cortex. Similarity of subjective emotional experiences was associated with similarity of the corresponding neural activation patterns. We conclude that different basic and non-basic emotions have distinguishable neural bases characterized by specific, distributed activation patterns in widespread cortical and subcortical circuits. Regionally differentiated engagement of these circuits defines the unique neural activity pattern and the corresponding subjective feeling associated with each emotion

    Constraining the Chiral Magnetic Effect with charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 and 5.02 TeV

    Systematic studies of charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV used to probe the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) are presented. These measurements are performed for charged particles in the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse momentum (p(T)) ranges |eta| and gamma(1, - 3) = . The results are used to estimate the contribution of background effects, associated with local charge conservation coupled to anisotropic flow modulations, to measurements of the CME. A blast-wave parametrisation that incorporates local charge conservation tuned to reproduce the centrality dependent background effects is not able to fully describe the measured gamma(1,1). Finally, the charge and centrality dependence of mixed-harmonics three-particle correlations, of the form gamma(1, 2) = , which are insensitive to the CME signal, verify again that background contributions dominate the measurement of gamma(1,1).Peer reviewe

    Multiplicity dependence of pi, K, and p production in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV

    This paper presents the measurements of pi(+/-), K-+/-, p and (p) over bar transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density in proton-proton (pp) collisions at root s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Such study allows us to isolate the center-ofmass energy dependence of light-flavour particle production. The measurements reported here cover a pT range from 0.1 to 20 GeV/c and are done in the rapidity interval | y| <0.5. The p(T)-differential particle ratios exhibit an evolution with multiplicity, similar to that observed in pp collisions at v s = 7 TeV, which is qualitatively described by some of the hydrodynamical and pQCD-inspired models discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the pT-integrated hadron-to-pion yield ratios measured in pp collisions at two different center-of-mass energies are consistent when compared at similar multiplicities. This also extends to strange and multi-strange hadrons, suggesting that, at LHC energies, particle hadrochemistry scales with particle multiplicity the same way under different collision energies and colliding systems.Peer reviewe

    Measurements of mixed harmonic cumulants in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV

    Correlations between moments of different flow coefficients are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. These new measurements are based on multiparticle mixed harmonic cumulants calculated using charged particles in the pseudorapidity region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.8 with the transverse momentum range 0.2 < p(T) < 5.0 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of correlations between two flow coefficients as well as the correlations between three flow coefficients, both in terms of their second moments, are shown. In addition, a collection of mixed harmonic cumulants involving higher moments of v(2) and v(3) is measured for the first time, where the characteristic signature of negative, positive and negative signs of four-, six- and eight-particle cumulants are observed, respectively. The measurements are compared to the hydrodynamic calculations using iEBE-VISHNU with AMPT and TRENTo initial conditions. It is shown that the measurements carried out using the LHC Run 2 data in 2015 have the precision to explore the details of initial-state fluctuations and probe the nonlinear hydrodynamic response of v(2) and v(3) to their corresponding initial anisotropy coefficients epsilon(2) and epsilon(3). These new studies on correlations between three flow coefficients as well as correlations between higher moments of two different flow coefficients will pave the way to tighten constraints on initial-state models and help to extract precise information on the dynamic evolution of the hot and dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC.     Coherent photoproduction of rho(0) vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV

    Cross sections for the coherent photoproduction of rho(0) vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV are reported. The measurements, which rely on the pi(+)pi(-) decay channel, are presented in three regions of rapidity covering the range vertical bar y vertical bar <0.8. For each rapidity interval, cross sections are shown for different nuclear-breakup classes defined according to the presence of neutrons measured in the zero-degree calorimeters. The results are compared with predictions based on different models of nuclear shadowing. Finally, the observation of a coherently produced resonance-like structure with a mass around 1.7 GeV/c(2) and a width of about 140 MeV/c(2) is reported and compared with similar observations from other experiments.Peer reviewe
