    Randomised prospective comparative analysis of functional outcome of osteosynthesis of intra-articular distal humerus fracture using triceps reflecting and transolecrenon approach

    Background: Intra articular fractures of distal humerus is one of the demanding injuries to manage due to its complex anatomy. Open reduction internal fixation is able to achieve painless, stable and mobile joint. This study is aimed at comparing functional outcome of patients treated with triceps reflecting and olecranon osteotomy approach.Methods: A hospital based randomized comparative study of 40 patients who diagnosed with distal humerus intraarticular fracture admitted in our hospital from April 2017 to March 2019. Triceps reflecting approach (group A) was used in 20 patients and olecranon osteotomy approach (group B) in 20 patients. Elbow range of movements and Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS) was used to compare outcome.Results: The mean elbow range of motion is 95.8±13.5 degree at 1 year follow up in group A and 94.5±9.3 degree in 1 year follow up at 1 year follow up in group B. The mean MEP score at end of 1 year in group A was 93.8±2.9 and in group B was 91.5±3.2 shows excellent results but there was no statistically significant difference between MEP scores of two groups. We observed 6 patients developed extension lag less than 10 degree in group A which was clinically insignificant to patients and 7 patients developed hardware prominence in group B.Conclusions: Triceps reflecting Bryan Morrey approach is equally effective as olecranon osteotomy approach in treatment of distal humerus intra articular fracture with less complication and operative time

    Histology and ultrastructure of male reproductive system of the Indian Spiny lobster Panulirus homarus (Decapoda: Palinuridae)

    The spiny lobster Panulirus homarus, distributed along the Southeast and Southwest coasts of India, is an important commercial species having mariculture potential. Despite its importance, the structural and ultrastructure features of male gonads from this species have received scarce attention. Hence this study was aimed to describe the male reproductive tract of the species, using standard histological and electron microscopy techniques. Gonads from 94 specimens of P. homarus ranging in carapace length 37mm-92mm from vizhinjam (Southwest coast of India.) were obtained and processed for the study (Histology-70 numbers & ultrastructure-24 numbers). The male reproductive system consists of paired testis and vas deferens located in the cephalo-thoracic region. Macroscopically, the reproductive tract was observed in lobsters >35mm carapace length. In immature testis, spermatogonia were seen which measured 6.9-13.8µm in diameter and in the mature testis primary (5.4-5.9µm) and secondary spermatocytes (2.8-3µm) and spermatids (2.2-2.4µm) were present. Each vas deferens consists of proximal and distal portions. The spermatophoric mass begins formation in the proximal vas deferens. In the distal vas deferens the spermatophoric mass containing the spermatozoa are arranged in packets towards the periphery by the gelatinous matrix produced by the typhlosole. Ultrastructurally, the spermatogonia have lamina, nucleus and mitochondria like bodies, the primary spermatocytes have nucleus, dense chromatin and vacuolated cytoplasm and the spermatids have mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and centrioles. The endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope in the spermatids form the acrosome. The radial arms with microtubules are formed in association with the dense endoplasmic reticulum, near the nucleus. The sperm has a spherical structure with the nucleus, lamellar region, spikes and acrosome. This is the first comprehensive report of the structure of the male gametes and spermatogenesis in P. homarus from Indian waters

    The present paper is based on the fishing results of FORV Sagar Sampada during July-August, 1987 along the southwest coast of India. The fish fauna of the Quilon Bank and Wadge Bank has a dominant nemipterid element and the Gulf of Mannar area has a dominant population of barracudas. Nemipterids constituted 88.2 and 64.4% of the total trawl catch from the Quilon Bank and Wadge Bank respectively

    Empirical linkages between ICT, tourism, and trade towards sustainable environment: evidence from BRICS countries

    There is a growing utilisation of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the recent digital era. Trade and tourism have also attained attention as determinants of environmental sustainability. Therefore, this study investigates linkages between ICT, tourism, trade, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in BRICS economies. Advanced panel estimation entitled cross-sectionally augmented autoregressive distributed lags (CSARDL) was applied from 1990 to 2019. Findings suggest the adverse effect of tourism, trade, and growth factors on environmental sustainability, whereas ICT helps promote a sustainable environment among the targeted economies. Likewise, the shortrun results prove that economic growth and tourism are prone to ecological health, while trade possesses an insignificant influence on ecological sustainability. These results suggest the integration of ICT in trade and tourism sectors to mitigate their negative ecological consequences

    Performance of the ocean state forecast system at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services

    The reliability of the operational Ocean State Forecast system at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) during tropical cyclones that affect the coastline of India is described in this article. The performance of this system during cyclone Thane that severely affected the southeast coast of India during the last week of December 2011 is reported here. Spec-tral wave model is used for forecasting the wave fields generated by the tropical cyclone and vali-dation of the same is done using real-time automated observation systems. The validation results indicate that the forecasted wave parameters agree well with the measurements. The feedback from the user community indicates that the forecast was reliable and highly useful. Alerts based on this operational ocean state forecast system are thus useful for protecting the property and lives of the coastal communities along the coastline of India. INCOIS is extending this service for the benefit of the other countries along the Indian Ocean rim

    Sequential development of histopathological manifestations in response to experimental infection of Vibrio alginolyticus in Asian Seabass

    Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), an important species for mariculture in the Asia-Pacific region, has been threatened by various infectious diseases hampering the profitability of its aquaculture. Vibriosis is the most common disease leading to considerable mortality and economic loss. Recent studies revealed that Vibrio alginolyticus is one of the most common species that causes vibriosis in farmed aquatic animals, including L. calcarifer. Despite our understanding of the aetiology, there is little information on the subsequent histological changes following experimental infection in fish. The present study fills this gap by investigating the sequential histopathological alterations in Asian seabass post intraperitoneal injection with V. alginolyticus. Significant organ changes were seen in the spleen, kidneys, liver, and to a lesser extent, the gills. The findings revealed an initial latency before major tissue responses occurred, with the kidney exhibiting the earliest and most severe changes. The spleen and liver also showed substantial alterations, while the gills showed minor changes. Experimental V. alginolyticus infection resulted in 90-95% mortality within 24-48 hours post-challenge. Our findings contribute to a more thorough understanding of histological changes in Asian seabass during V. alginolyticus infection, highlighting the importance of disease progression, and mitigation measures
