Zoo-FISH in the European mole (Talpa europaea) detects all ancestral Boreo-Eutherian human homologous chromosome associations
Zoo-FISH with human whole-chromosome paint probes delineated syntenic association of human homologous chromosome segments 3-21, 14-15, 16-19, 4-8, 7-16 and 12-22 (twice) in the European mole (Talpa europaea, Talpidae, Eulipotyphla, Mammalia). These segment associations represent shared ancestral Boreo-Eutherian traits, half of which were previously not described for Eulipotyphla. The karyotype of the European mole acquired a minimum of 19 translocations and six inversions compared to the presumed Boreo-Eutherian ancestor. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel
Tests for primordial non-Gaussianity
We investigate the relative sensitivities of several tests for deviations
from Gaussianity in the primordial distribution of density perturbations. We
consider models for non-Gaussianity that mimic that which comes from inflation
as well as that which comes from topological defects. The tests we consider
involve the cosmic microwave background (CMB), large-scale structure (LSS),
high-redshift galaxies, and the abundances and properties of clusters. We find
that the CMB is superior at finding non-Gaussianity in the primordial
gravitational potential (as inflation would produce), while observations of
high-redshift galaxies are much better suited to find non-Gaussianity that
resembles that expected from topological defects. We derive a simple expression
that relates the abundance of high-redshift objects in non-Gaussian models to

GONG p-mode frequency changes with solar activity
We present a correlation analysis of GONG p-mode frequencies with nine solar
activity indices for the period 1995 August to 1997 August. This study includes
spherical harmonic degree in the range 2 to 150 and the frequency range of
1500-3500 \mu Hz. Using three statistical tests, the measured mean frequency
shifts show strong to good correlation with activity indices. A decrease of
0.06 \mu Hz in frequency, during the descending phase of solar cycle 22 and an
increase of 0.04 \mu Hz in the ascending phase of solar cycle 23 is observed.
These results provide the first evidence for change in p-mode frequencies
around the declining phase of solar cycle 22 and beginning of new cycle 23.
This analysis further confirms that the temporal behaviour of the solar
frequency shifts closely follow the phase of the solar activity cycle.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. To appear in Ap.
Electrochemical reduction of carbamazepine in ethanol and water solutions using a glassy carbon electrode
The electrochemical reduction of carbamazepine in ethanol and water using a glassy carbon electrode has been studied. In all experimental conditions of scan rate and concentration of carbamazepine an irreversible cathodic wave was observed by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Electrochemical parameters and a plausible EqC mechanism have been reported from the electrochemical measurements and digital simulation. The values of thermodynamic E1/2 were correlated with solvent polarity parameters that it can be interesting for biological, pharmaceutical and forensic purposes. Limits of Detection (LOD) for DPV are 1.1 and 9.0 g/mL (4.65x10-6 and 3.81x10-5 M) in ethanol and water, respectively. The precision and recoveries obtained for tablets and plasma samples showed that the method could be successfully used for analysis
Tiltrotor CFD part II: aerodynamic optimisation of tiltrotor blades
This paper presents aerodynamic optimisation of tiltrotor blades with high-fidelity computational
fluid dynamics. The employed optimisation framework is based on a quasi-Newton
method, and the required high-fidelity flow gradients were computed using a discrete adjoint
solver. Single-point optimisations were first performed, to highlight the contrasting requirements
of the helicopter and aeroplane flight regimes. It is then shown how a trade-off blade
design can be obtained using a multi-point optimisation strategy. The parametrisation of the
blade shape allowed to modify the twist and chord distributions, and to introduce a swept tip.
The work shows how these main blade shape parameters influence the optimal performance
of the tiltrotor in helicopter and aeroplane modes, and how a compromise blade shape can
increase the overall tiltrotor performance. Moreover, in all the presented cases, the accuracy
of the adjoint gradients resulted in a small number of flow evaluations for finding the optimal
solution, thus indicating gradient-based optimisation as a viable tool for modern tiltrotor
design
X-ray observations of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5643
We present results from a ~55 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the obscured
AGN, NGC 5643, performed in July 2009. A previous, shorter (about 10 ks)
XMM-Newton observation in February 2003 had left two major issues open, the
nature of the hard X-ray emission (Compton-thin vs Compton-thick) and of the
soft X-ray excess (photoionized vs collisionally ionized matter). The new
observation shows that the source is Compton-thick and that the dominant
contribution to the soft X-ray emission is by photoionized matter (even if it
is still unclear whether collisionally ionized matter may contribute as well).
We also studied three bright X-ray sources that are in the field of NGC 5643.
The ULX NGC 5643 X-1 was confirmed to be very luminous, even if more than a
factor 2 fainter than in 2003. We then provided the first high quality spectrum
of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3602. The last source, CXOJ143244.5-442020, is
likely an unobscured AGN, possibly belonging to Abell 3602.Comment: 6 pages. Accepted for publication in A&
Non-relativistic Extended Gravity and its applications across different astrophysical scales
Using dimensional analysis techniques we present an extension of Newton's
gravitational theory built under the assumption that Milgrom's acceleration
constant is a fundamental quantity of nature. The gravitational force converges
to Newton's gravity and to a MOND-like description in two different mass and
length regimes. It is shown that a modification on the force sector (and not in
the dynamical one as MOND does) is more convenient and can reproduce and
predict different phenomena usually ascribed to dark matter at the

Generative Temporal Models with Spatial Memory for Partially Observed Environments
In model-based reinforcement learning, generative and temporal models of
environments can be leveraged to boost agent performance, either by tuning the
agent's representations during training or via use as part of an explicit
planning mechanism. However, their application in practice has been limited to
simplistic environments, due to the difficulty of training such models in
larger, potentially partially-observed and 3D environments. In this work we
introduce a novel action-conditioned generative model of such challenging
environments. The model features a non-parametric spatial memory system in
which we store learned, disentangled representations of the environment.
Low-dimensional spatial updates are computed using a state-space model that
makes use of knowledge on the prior dynamics of the moving agent, and
high-dimensional visual observations are modelled with a Variational
Auto-Encoder. The result is a scalable architecture capable of performing
coherent predictions over hundreds of time steps across a range of partially
observed 2D and 3D environments.Comment: ICML 201
