    Exploring Late Bronze Age systems of bronzework production in Switzerland through Network Science

    YesMany hundreds of Bronze Age bronze artefacts are known from excavations in Switzerland, yet the interpretation of production networks from the object find locations remain problematic. It is proposed that the decorative elements used on items, such as ring-jewellery, can be used as elements to assist in the identification of artisanal traditions and ‘schools’, and also regional or community preference and selection of specific designs. Combining the analysis of over 1700 items of ring-jewellery from Switzerland with approaches from network science has facilitated the identification of regional clustering of design elements, comparable with cultural typologies in the area. It is also possible to identify potential instances of cultural differentiation through decoration within the broader regional cultural traditions.     Gle1p is an essential, nuclear pore complex (NPC)-associated RNA export factor. In a screen for high copy suppressors of a GLE1 mutant strain, we identified the FG-nucleoporin Rip1p and the DEAD-box protein Rat8p/Dbp5p, both of which have roles in RNA export; we also found Ymr255p/Gfd1p, a novel inessential protein. All three high copy suppressors interact with the C-terminal domain of Gle1p; immunoelectron microscopy localizations indicate that Gle1p, Rip1p and Rat8p/Dbp5p are present on the NPC cytoplasmic fibrils; Rip1p was also found within the nucleoplasm and on the nuclear baskets. In vivo localizations support the hypothesis that Rip1p contributes to the association of Gle1p with the pore and that Gle1p, in turn, provides a binding site for Rat8p/Dbp5p at the NPC. These data are consistent with the view that Gle1p, Rip1p, Rat8p/Dbp5p and Ymr255p/Gfd1p associate on the cytoplasmic side of the NPC to act in a terminal step of RNA export. We also describe a human functional homologue of Rip1p, called hCG1, which rescues Rip1p function in yeast, consistent with the evolutionary conservation of this NPC-associated protein

    Zurich-Alpenquai : a multidisciplinary approach to the chronological development of a Late Bronze Age lakeside settlement in the northern Circum-Alpine Region

    The Alpenquai lake-dwelling is located on Lake Zurich, and can be considered as one of the rare Late Bronze Age lake-dwellings with a pronounced organic-rich cultural layer in the northern Circum-Alpine region. Within a larger research project, investigating the final abandonment of the lakeshores in the Circum-Alpine area at the end of the Late Bronze Age, this settlement has been investigated using a multidisciplinary research design. Combining micromorphology, archaeobotany, palynology, archaeozoology and material culture studies, the formation of the site is reconstructed, and the reasons for its final abandonment are sought. A highly dynamic lake system that caused a lake water level rise before 900 BC, a regression in the second half of the 9th century BC, and a later transgression, could be detected. The settlement appears to have been established during the lake regression, and abandoned during the transgression, proving a high degree of environmental adaptation by its inhabitants.
