Structural characterization of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7)/Y(2)O(3) composite films
Using 4-circle x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy we have
studied the microstructure and in-plane orientation of the phases present in
thin film composite mixtures of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) and Y(2)O(3). We see a high
degree of in-plane orientation and have verified a previous prediction for the
in-plane order of Y(2)BaCuO(5) on (110) MgO. Transmission electron microscopy
shows the composite films to be a mixture of two phases, with YBCO grain sizes
of 1 micron. We have also compared our observations of the in-plane order to
the predictions of a modified near coincidence site lattice model.Comment: To be published in Journal of Materials Research, (4 pages, 4 jpeg

Quantum magnetism with ultracold molecules
This article gives an introduction to the realization of effective quantum
magnetism with ultracold molecules in an optical lattice, reviews experimental
and theoretical progress, and highlights future opportunities opened up by
ongoing experiments. Ultracold molecules offer capabilities that are otherwise
difficult or impossible to achieve in other effective spin systems, such as
long-ranged spin-spin interactions with controllable degrees of spatial and
spin anisotropy and favorable energy scales. Realizing quantum magnetism with
ultracold molecules provides access to rich many-body behaviors, including many
exotic phases of matter and interesting excitations and dynamics.
Far-from-equilibrium dynamics plays a key role in our exposition, just as it
did in recent ultracold molecule experiments realizing effective quantum
magnetism. In particular, we show that dynamical probes allow the observation
of correlated many-body spin physics, even in polar molecule gases that are not
quantum degenerate. After describing how quantum magnetism arises in ultracold
molecules and discussing recent observations of quantum magnetism with polar
molecules, we survey prospects for the future, ranging from immediate goals to
long-term visions.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Review articl
The 30/20 GHz communications system functional requirements
The characteristics of 30/20 GHz usage in satellite systems to be used in support of projected communication requirements of the 1990's are defined. A requirements analysis which develops projected market demand for satellite services by general and specialized carriers and an analysis of the impact of propagation and system constraints on 30/20 GHz operation are included. A set of technical performance characteristics for the 30/20 GHz systems which can serve the resulting market demand and the experimental program necessary to verify technical and operational aspects of the proposed systems is also discussed
Automated weld torch guidance control system
A device for automatically controlling the movement of a welding torch while welding an elongated joint is described. A charge injection television camera is carried on a movable support. The camera includes a matrix of individual light sensing video elements which generate voltages responsive to light reflected off of the joint and surrounding areas of the work piece. The voltages produced by the pixels are converted to digital words which are fed to a microprocessor for generating an error signal. This error signal is fed to a digital motor which is used to drive a movable support upon which the television camera is carried
Advanced flight deck/crew station simulator functional requirements
This report documents a study of flight deck/crew system research facility requirements for investigating issues involved with developing systems, and procedures for interfacing transport aircraft with air traffic control systems planned for 1985 to 2000. Crew system needs of NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and industry were investigated and reported. A matrix of these is included, as are recommended functional requirements and design criteria for simulation facilities in which to conduct this research. Methods of exploiting the commonality and similarity in facilities are identified, and plans for exploiting this in order to reduce implementation costs and allow efficient transfer of experiments from one facility to another are presented
Tactical Opportunities, Risk Attitude and Choice of Farming Strategy: an Application of the Distribution Method
When assessing farming strategies, it is important to account for the opportunities provided for tactically adjusting to outcomes of risk. The hypothesis that accounting for tactical adjustment is more important than accounting for risk attitude was supported in this study with regard to identifying the optimal drainage recirculation strategy for an irrigated dairy farm. Failing to account for tactical adjustment would lead to a subāoptimal choice, costing the farmer about A$3 100 in present value terms. In contrast, failing to account for risk aversion would not affect the strategy chosen. The distribution method was found to be well suited to modelling tactical adjustment.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
Mediators of mechanotransduction between bone cells
Mechanical forces are known to regulate the function of tissues in the body, including bone. Bone adapts to its mechanical environment by altering its shape and increasing its size in response to increases in mechanical load associated with exercise, and by decreasing its size in response to decreases in mechanical load associated with microgravity or prolonged bed rest. Changes in bone size and shape are produced by a cooperative action of two main types of the bone cells - osteoclasts that destroy bone and osteoblasts that build bone. These cell types come from different developmental origins, and vary greatly in their characteristics, such as size, shape, and expression of receptor subtypes, which potentially may affect their responses to mechanical stimuli. The objective of this study is to compare the responses of osteoclasts and osteoblasts to mechanical stimulation.
This study has allowed us to conclude the following:
1. A mediator is released from a single source cell.
2. The response to the mediator changes with distance.
3. The value of the apparent diffusion coeficient increases with distance.
4. A plausible proposed mechanism is that ATP is released and degrades to ADP.
5. Future experiments are required to confim that ATP is the mediator as suggested
Automatic weld torch guidance control system
A highly reliable, fully digital, closed circuit television optical, type automatic weld seam tracking control system was developed. This automatic tracking equipment is used to reduce weld tooling costs and increase overall automatic welding reliability. The system utilizes a charge injection device digital camera which as 60,512 inidividual pixels as the light sensing elements. Through conventional scanning means, each pixel in the focal plane is sequentially scanned, the light level signal digitized, and an 8-bit word transmitted to scratch pad memory. From memory, the microprocessor performs an analysis of the digital signal and computes the tracking error. Lastly, the corrective signal is transmitted to a cross seam actuator digital drive motor controller to complete the closed loop, feedback, tracking system. This weld seam tracking control system is capable of a tracking accuracy of + or - 0.2 mm, or better. As configured, the system is applicable to square butt, V-groove, and lap joint weldments
