BFT Hamiltonian embedding for SU(3) Skyrmion
We newly apply the Batalin, Fradkin and Tyutin (BFT) formalism to the SU(3)
flavor Skyrmion model to investigate the Weyl ordering correction to the
structure of the hyperfine splittings of strange baryons. On the other hand,
the Berry phases and Casimir effects are also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, modified titl
Numerical Study of Wave Propagation in Uniaxially Anisotropic Lorentzian Backward Wave Slabs
The propagation and refraction of a cylindrical wave created by a line
current through a slab of backward wave medium, also called left-handed medium,
is numerically studied with FDTD. The slab is assumed to be uniaxially
anisotropic. Several sets of constitutive parameters are considered and
comparisons with theoretical results are made. Electric field distributions are
studied inside and behind the slab. It is found that the shape of the
wavefronts and the regions of real and complex wave vectors are in agreement
with theoretical results.Comment: 6 pages, figure
Nonreactive mixing study of a scramjet swept-strut fuel injector
The results are presented of a cold-mixing investigation performed to supply combustor design information and to determine optimum normal fuel-injector configurations for a general scramjet swept-strut fuel injector. The experimental investigation was made with two swept struts in a closed duct at a Mach number of 4.4 and a nominal ratio of jet mass flow to air mass flow of 0.0295, with helium used to simulate hydrogen fuel. Four injector patterns were evaluated; they represented the range of hole spacing and the ratio of jet dynamic pressure to free-stream dynamic pressure. Helium concentration, pitot pressure, and static pressure in the downstream mixing region were measured to generate the contour plots needed to define the mixing-region flow field and the mixing parameters. Experimental results show that the fuel penetration from the struts was less than the predicted values based on flat-plate data; but the mixing rate was faster and produced a mixing length less than one-half that predicted
UCN Upscattering rates in a molecular deuterium crystal
A calculation of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) upscattering rates in molecular
deuterium solids has been carried out, taking into account intra-molecular
exictations and phonons. The different moelcular species ortho-D2 (with even
rotational quantum number J) and para-D2 (with odd J) exhibit significantly
different UCN-phonon annihilation cross-sections. Para- to ortho-D2 conversion,
furthermore, couples UCN to an energy bath of excited rotational states without
mediating phonons. This anomalous upscattering mechanism restricts the UCN
lifetime to 4.6 msec in a normal-D2 solid with 33% para content.Comment: 3 pages, one figur
Exciton gas transport through nano-constrictions
An indirect exciton is a bound state of an electron and a hole in spatially
separated layers. Two-dimensional indirect excitons can be created optically in
heterostructures containing double quantum wells or atomically thin
semiconductors. We study theoretically transmission of such bosonic
quasiparticles through nano-constrictions. We show that quantum transport
phenomena, e.g., conductance quantization, single-slit diffraction, two-slit
interference, and the Talbot effect, are experimentally realizable in systems
of indirect excitons. We discuss similarities and differences between these
phenomena and their counterparts in electronic devices.Comment: (v2) Updated title, text, and references; 12 pages, 9 figure
Influence of equation of state on interpretation of electrical conductivity measurements in strongly coupled tungsten plasma
We study the influence of equation-of-state (EOS) model on the interpretation
of electrical conductivity measurements in strongly coupled plasma of tungsten
by Korobenko et al. (2002 Plasma Physics Reports 28(12) 1008--1016). Three
different semiempirical EOS models for tungsten are used. Discrepancies in
obtained thermodynamic parameters and specific resistivity values as compared
with calculation results of Korobenko et al. are analysed.Comment: 11 pages, 5 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys.

Analyticity and uniform stability in the inverse spectral problem for Dirac operators
We prove that the inverse spectral mapping reconstructing the square
integrable potentials on [0,1] of Dirac operators in the AKNS form from their
spectral data (two spectra or one spectrum and the corresponding norming
constants) is analytic and uniformly stable in a certain sense.Comment: 19 page
Mean shear flows generated by nonlinear resonant Alfven waves
In the context of resonant absorption, nonlinearity has two different
manifestations. The first is the reduction in amplitude of perturbations around
the resonant point (wave energy absorption). The second is the generation of
mean shear flows outside the dissipative layer surrounding the resonant point.
Ruderman et al. [Phys. Plasmas 4, 75 (1997)] studied both these effects at the
slow resonance in isotropic plasmas. Clack et al. [Astron. Astrophys. 494}, 317
(2009)] investigated nonlinearity at the Alfven resonance, however, they did
not include the generation of mean shear flow. In this present paper, we
investigate the mean shear flow, analytically, and study its properties. We
find that the flow generated is parallel to the magnetic surfaces and has a
characteristic velocity proportional to , where is
the dimensionless amplitude of perturbations far away from the resonance. This
is, qualitatively, similar to the flow generated at the slow resonance. The
jumps in the derivatives of the parallel and perpendicular components of mean
shear flow across the dissipative layer are derived. We estimate the generated
mean shear flow to be of the order of in both the solar
upper chromosphere and solar corona, however, this value strongly depends on
the choice of boundary conditions. It is proposed that the generated mean shear
flow can produce a Kelvin--Helmholtz instability at the dissipative layer which
can create turbulent motions. This instability would be an additional effect,
as a Kelvin--Helmholtz instability may already exist due to the velocity field
of the resonant Alfven waves. This flow can also be superimposed onto existing
large scale motions in the solar upper atmosphere.Comment: 11 page
