    A simple visual navigation system for an UAV

    We present a simple and robust monocular camera-based navigation system for an autonomous quadcopter. The method does not require any additional infrastructure like radio beacons, artificial landmarks or GPS and can be easily combined with other navigation methods and algorithms. Its computational complexity is independent of the environment size and it works even when sensing only one landmark at a time, allowing its operation in landmark poor environments. We also describe an FPGA based embedded realization of the method’s most computationally demanding phase

    A practical multirobot localization system

    We present a fast and precise vision-based software intended for multiple robot localization. The core component of the software is a novel and efficient algorithm for black and white pattern detection. The method is robust to variable lighting conditions, achieves sub-pixel precision and its computational complexity is independent of the processed image size. With off-the-shelf computational equipment and low-cost cameras, the core algorithm is able to process hundreds of images per second while tracking hundreds of objects with a millimeter precision. In addition, we present the method's mathematical model, which allows to estimate the expected localization precision, area of coverage, and processing speed from the camera's intrinsic parameters and hardware's processing capacity. The correctness of the presented model and performance of the algorithm in real-world conditions is verified in several experiments. Apart from the method description, we also make its source code public at \emph{http://purl.org/robotics/whycon}; so, it can be used as an enabling technology for various mobile robotic problems

    Polarimetric SAR Image Segmentation with B-Splines and a New Statistical Model

    We present an approach for polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image region boundary detection based on the use of B-Spline active contours and a new model for polarimetric SAR data: the GHP distribution. In order to detect the boundary of a region, initial B-Spline curves are specified, either automatically or manually, and the proposed algorithm uses a deformable contours technique to find the boundary. In doing this, the parameters of the polarimetric GHP model for the data are estimated, in order to find the transition points between the region being segmented and the surrounding area. This is a local algorithm since it works only on the region to be segmented. Results of its performance are presented

    Development and validation of an algorithm for cardiomyocyte beating frequency determination

    The Chagas disease or Tripanosomiasis Americana affects between 16 and 18 million people in endemic areas. This disease affects the beating rate of infected patients' cardiomyocytes. At the Molecular Biology of Chagas Disease Laboratory in Argentina the effect of isolated patient's serum antibodies is studied over rat cardiomyocyte cultures. In this work an image processing application to measure the beating rate of this culture over video sequences is presented. This work is organized as follows. Firstly, a preliminary analysis of the problem is introduced, isolating the main characteristics of the problem. Secondly, a Monte Carlo experiment is designed and used to evaluate the robustness and validity of the algorithm. Finally, an algorithm of order O(T(N log N + N)) for tracking cardiomyocyte membranes is presented, where T is the number of frames and N is the maximum area of the membrane.     Boruvka meets nearest neighbors

    Computing the minimum spanning tree (MST) is a common task in the pattern recognition and the computer vision fields. However, little work has been done on efficient general methods for solving the problem on large datasets where graphs are complete and edge weights are given implicitly by a distance between vertex attributes. In this work we propose a generic algorithm that extends the classical Boruvka's algorithm by using nearest neighbors search structures to significantly reduce time and memory consumption. The algorithm can also compute in a straightforward way approximate MSTs thus further improving speed. Experiments show that the proposed method outperforms classical algorithms on large low-dimensional datasets by several orders of magnitude. © Springer-Verlag 2013.Fil:Tepper, M.     Multiple clues for license plate detection and recognition

    This paper addresses a license plate detection and recognition (LPR) task on still images of trucks. The main contribution of our LPR system is the fusion of different segmentation algorithms used to improve the license plate detection.     Astronomical image data reduction for moving object detection

    In this work we present a system for autonomous discovery of asteroids, space trash and other moving objects. This system performs astronomical image data reduction based on an image processing pipeline.     SAR image segmentation using level sets and region competition under the GH model

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are dificult to segment due to their characteristic noise, called speckle, which is multiplicative, non-gaussian and has a low signal to noise ratio. In this work we use the GH distribution to model the SAR data from the different regions of the image. We estimate their statistical parameters and use them in a segmentation algorithm based on multiregion competition.
