Discrepancies and their means
It is shown that the discrepancy function for point distributions on a torus
is expressed by an explicit formula in terms of its mean values on sub-tori. As
an application of this formula, a simple proof of a theorem of Lev on the
equivalence of - and shifted -discrepancies is given
Weakly coupled states on branching graphs
We consider a Schr\"odinger particle on a graph consisting of links
joined at a single point. Each link supports a real locally integrable
potential ; the self--adjointness is ensured by the type
boundary condition at the vertex. If all the links are semiinfinite and ideally
coupled, the potential decays as along each of them, is
non--repulsive in the mean and weak enough, the corresponding Schr\"odinger
operator has a single negative eigenvalue; we find its asymptotic behavior. We
also derive a bound on the number of bound states and explain how the
coupling constant may be interpreted in terms of a family of
squeezed potentials.Comment: LaTeX file, 7 pages, no figure
Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture for periodic operators with strong perturbations
We consider a periodic self-adjoint pseudo-differential operator
, , in which satisfies the following conditions:
(i) the symbol of is smooth in \bx, and (ii) the perturbation has
order less than . Under these assumptions, we prove that the spectrum of
contains a half-line. This, in particular implies the Bethe-Sommerfeld
Conjecture for the Schr\"odinger operator with a periodic magnetic potential in
all dimensions.Comment: 61 page
Band spectra of rectangular graph superlattices
We consider rectangular graph superlattices of sides l1, l2 with the
wavefunction coupling at the junctions either of the delta type, when they are
continuous and the sum of their derivatives is proportional to the common value
at the junction with a coupling constant alpha, or the "delta-prime-S" type
with the roles of functions and derivatives reversed; the latter corresponds to
the situations where the junctions are realized by complicated geometric
scatterers. We show that the band spectra have a hidden fractal structure with
respect to the ratio theta := l1/l2. If the latter is an irrational badly
approximable by rationals, delta lattices have no gaps in the weak-coupling
case. We show that there is a quantization for the asymptotic critical values
of alpha at which new gap series open, and explain it in terms of
number-theoretic properties of theta. We also show how the irregularity is
manifested in terms of Fermi-surface dependence on energy, and possible
localization properties under influence of an external electric field.

Photonic Band Gaps of Three-Dimensional Face-Centered Cubic Lattices
We show that the photonic analogue of the Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method is a
viable alternative to the plane-wave method to analyze the spectrum of
electromagnetic waves in a three-dimensional periodic dielectric lattice.
Firstly, in the case of an fcc lattice of homogeneous dielectric spheres, we
reproduce the main features of the spectrum obtained by the plane wave method,
namely that for a sufficiently high dielectric contrast a full gap opens in the
spectrum between the eights and ninth bands if the dielectric constant
of spheres is lower than the dielectric constant of
the background medium. If , no gap is found in the
spectrum. The maximal value of the relative band-gap width approaches 14% in
the close-packed case and decreases monotonically as the filling fraction
decreases. The lowest dielectric contrast for which a
full gap opens in the spectrum is determined to be 8.13. Eventually, in the
case of an fcc lattice of coated spheres, we demonstrate that a suitable
coating can enhance gap widths by as much as 50%.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figs., plain latex - a section on coated spheres, two

On occurrence of spectral edges for periodic operators inside the Brillouin zone
The article discusses the following frequently arising question on the
spectral structure of periodic operators of mathematical physics (e.g.,
Schroedinger, Maxwell, waveguide operators, etc.). Is it true that one can
obtain the correct spectrum by using the values of the quasimomentum running
over the boundary of the (reduced) Brillouin zone only, rather than the whole
zone? Or, do the edges of the spectrum occur necessarily at the set of
``corner'' high symmetry points? This is known to be true in 1D, while no
apparent reasons exist for this to be happening in higher dimensions. In many
practical cases, though, this appears to be correct, which sometimes leads to
the claims that this is always true. There seems to be no definite answer in
the literature, and one encounters different opinions about this problem in the
community.
In this paper, starting with simple discrete graph operators, we construct a
variety of convincing multiply-periodic examples showing that the spectral
edges might occur deeply inside the Brillouin zone. On the other hand, it is
also shown that in a ``generic'' case, the situation of spectral edges
appearing at high symmetry points is stable under small perturbations. This
explains to some degree why in many (maybe even most) practical cases the
statement still holds.Comment: 25 pages, 10 EPS figures. Typos corrected and a reference added in
