On characters of Chevalley groups vanishing at the non-semisimple elements
Let G be a finite simple group of Lie type. In this paper we study characters
of G that vanish at the non-semisimple elements and whose degree is equal to
the order of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. Such characters can be viewed
as a natural generalization of the Steinberg character. For groups G of small
rank we also determine the characters of this degree vanishing only at the
non-identity unipotent elements.Comment: Dedicated to Lino Di Martino on the occasion of his 65th birthda
PI3Kinase signaling in glioblastoma
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary tumor of the CNS in the adult. It is characterized by exponential growth and diffuse invasiveness. Among many different genetic alterations in GBM, e.g., mutations of PTEN, EGFR, p16/p19 and p53 and their impact on aberrant signaling have been thoroughly characterized. A major barrier to develop a common therapeutic strategy is founded on the fact that each tumor has its individual genetic fingerprint. Nonetheless, the PI3K pathway may represent a common therapeutic target to most GBM due to its central position in the signaling cascade affecting proliferation, apoptosis and migration. The read-out of blocking PI3K alone or in combination with other cancer pathways should mainly focus, besides the cytostatic effect, on cell death induction since sublethal damage may induce selection of more malignant clones. Targeting more than one pathway instead of a single agent approach may be more promising to kill GBM cell

The Density Effect in (W-S-W) Wood Connections with Internal Steel Plate and Passive Protection under Fire
The main objective of this work is to understand the fire behaviour of unprotected wood-to-wood
connections with internal steel plate (W-S-W) in comparison with connections using passive
protection with gypsum plasterboard. Passive fire protection uses systems that help prevent the
spread of fire. Analytical methodologies according Eurocode 5 part 1-1 were used to the designed
connections in different wood densities material. After that, to predict the fire exposure and the
connection capacity a computational modelling was performed. Results of the temperature field
and the char layer formation, for unprotected and protected members, were compared. Two
different cross sections, only in wood or in wood-steel, were chosen to verify the evolution of
