Properties of holographic dark energy at the Hubble length
We consider holographic cosmological models of dark energy in which the
infrared cutoff is set by the Hubble's radius. We show that any interacting
dark energy model, regardless of its detailed form, can be recast as a non
interacting model in which the holographic parameter evolves slowly
with time. Two specific cases are analyzed. We constrain the parameters of both
models with observational data, and show that they can be told apart at the

Ripples in Tapped or Blown Powder
We observe ripples forming on the surface of a granular powder in a container
submitted from below to a series of brief and distinct shocks. After a few
taps, the pattern turns out to be stable against any further shock of the same
amplitude. We find experimentally that the characteristic wavelength of the
pattern is proportional to the amplitude of the shocks. Starting from
consideration involving Darcy's law for air flow through the porous granulate
and avalanche properties, we build up a semi-quantitative model which fits
satisfactorily the set of experimental observations as well as a couple of

Parabolic dunes in north-eastern Brazil
In this work we present measurements of vegetation cover over parabolic dunes
with different degree of activation along the north-eastern Brazilian coast. We
are able to extend the local values of the vegetation cover density to the
whole dune by correlating measurements with the gray-scale levels of a high
resolution satellite image of the dune field. The empirical vegetation
distribution is finally used to validate the results of a recent continuous

Interstitial gas and density-segregation in vertically-vibrated granular media
We report experimental studies of the effect of interstitial gas on
mass-density-segregation in a vertically-vibrated mixture of equal-sized bronze
and glass spheres. Sufficiently strong vibration in the presence of
interstitial gas induces vertical segregation into sharply separated bronze and
glass layers. We find that the segregated steady state (i.e., bronze or glass
layer on top) is a sensitive function of gas pressure and viscosity, as well as
vibration frequency and amplitude. In particular, we identify distinct regimes
of behavior that characterize the change from bronze-on-top to glass-on-top

Dynamics of shallow impact cratering
We present data for the time-dependence of wooden spheres penetrating into a
loose non-cohesive packing of glass beads. The stopping time is a factor of
three longer than the time needed to travel the total penetration
distance at the impact speed . The acceleration decreases
monotonically throughout the impact. These kinematics are modelled by a
position- and velocity-dependent stopping force that is constrained to
reproduce prior observations for the scaling of the penetration depth with the

Malawi has one of the world's highest rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (10.6%), and southern Malawi, where Thyolo district is located, bears the highest burden in the country (14.5%). Tuberculosis, common among HIV-infected people, requires radiologic diagnosis, yet Malawi has no radiologists in public service. This hinders rapid and accurate diagnosis and increases morbidity and mortality
Jamming during the discharge of granular matter from a silo
In this work we present an experimental study of the jamming that stops the
free flow of grains from a silo discharging by gravity. When the outlet size is
not much bigger than the beads, granular material jams the outlet of the
container due to the formation of an arch. Statistical data from the number of
grains fallen between consecutive jams are presented. The information that they
provide can help to understand the jamming phenomenon. As the ratio between the
size of the orifice and the size of the beads is increased, the probability
that an arch blocks the outlet decreases. We show here that there is a power
law divergence of the mean avalanche size for a finite critical radius. Beyond
this critical radius no jamming can occur and the flow is never stopped. The
dependence of the arch formation on the shape and the material of the grains
has been explored. It has been found that the material properties of the grains
do not affect the arch formation probability. On the contrary, the shape of the
grains deeply influences it. A simple model to interpret the results is also

How does the knowledge environment shape procurement practices for orthopaedic medical devices in Mexico?
BACKGROUND: In organisational theory there is an assumption that knowledge is used effectively in healthcare systems that perform well. Actors in healthcare systems focus on managing knowledge of clinical processes like, for example, clinical decision-making to improve patient care. We know little about connecting that knowledge to administrative processes like high-risk medical device procurement. We analysed knowledge-related factors that influence procurement and clinical procedures for orthopaedic medical devices in Mexico. METHODS: We based our qualitative study on 48 semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders in Mexico: orthopaedic specialists, government officials, and social security system managers or administrators. We took a knowledge-management related perspective (i) to analyse factors of managing knowledge of clinical procedures, (ii) to assess the role of this knowledge and in relation to procurement of orthopaedic medical devices, and (iii) to determine how to improve the situation. RESULTS: The results of this study are primarily relevant for Mexico but may also give impulsion to other health systems with highly standardized procurement practices. We found that knowledge of clinical procedures in orthopaedics is generated inconsistently and not always efficiently managed. Its support for procuring orthopaedic medical devices is insufficient. Identified deficiencies: leaders who lack guidance and direction and thus use knowledge poorly; failure to share knowledge; insufficiently defined formal structures and processes for collecting information and making it available to actors of health system; lack of strategies to benefit from synergies created by information and knowledge exchange. Many factors are related directly or indirectly to technological aspects, which are insufficiently developed. CONCLUSIONS: The content of this manuscript is novel as it analyses knowledge-related factors that influence procurement of orthopaedic medical devices in Mexico. Based on our results we recommend that the procurement mechanism should integrate knowledge from clinical procedures adequately in their decision-making. Without strong guidance, organisational changes, and support by technological solutions to improve the generation and management of knowledge, procurement processes for orthopaedic high-risk medical devices will remain sub-optimal
In vitro and in vivo expression of foreign genes by transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus-derived minigenomes
A helper-dependent expression system based on transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV) has been developed using a minigenome of 3·9 kb (M39). Expression of the reporter gene {beta}-glucuronidase (GUS) (2–8 µg per 106 cells) and the porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV) ORF5 (1–2 µg per 106 cells) has been shown using a TGEV-derived minigenome. GUS expression levels increased about eightfold with the m.o.i. and were maintained for more than eight passages in cell culture. Nevertheless, instability of the GUS and ORF5 subgenomic mRNAs was observed from passages five and four, respectively. About a quarter of the cells in culture expressing the helper virus also produced the reporter gene as determined by studying GUS mRNA production by in situ hybridization or immunodetection to visualize the protein synthesized. Expression of GUS was detected in the lungs, but not in the gut, of swine immunized with the virus vector. Around a quarter of lung cells showing replication of the helper virus were also positive for the reporter gene. Interestingly, strong humoral immune responses to both GUS and PRRSV ORF5 were induced in swine with this virus vector. The large cloning capacity and the tissue specificity of the TGEV-derived minigenomes suggest that these virus vectors are very promising for vaccine development
Packing Fractions and Maximum Angles of Stability of Granular Materials
In two-dimensional rotating drum experiments, we find two separate influences
of the packing fraction of a granular heap on its stability. For a fixed grain
shape, the stability increases with packing fraction. However, in determining
the relative stability of different grain shapes, those with the lowest average
packing fractions tend to form the most stable heaps. We also show that only
