    Seasonal dynamics of three lepidopteran stored grain pests in Slovenia

    In the period 2004-2006 seasonal dynamics of Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella), Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella) and Angoumois grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella) was studied in the mills and grain warehouses in central Slovenia. For this purpose pheromone traps were used from April until December, and the males of all three lepidopteran pests were counted in two week intervals. The three insect pests under investigation developed two peaks in capture per year that might represent two distinct generations per year. In the maize open air storage Ephestia kuehniella was the most numerous, while Plodia interpunctella was more frequent in the closed storage in mills and warehouses, Sitotroga cerealella was slightly less common in these latter closed warehouses.     New Spin-Two Gauged Sigma Models and General Conformal Field Theory

    Recently, we have studied the general Virasoro construction at one loop in the background of the general non-linear sigma model. Here, we find the action formulation of these new conformal field theories when the background sigma model is itself conformal. In this case, the new conformal field theories are described by a large class of new spin-two gauged sigma models. As examples of the new actions, we discuss the spin-two gauged WZW actions, which describe the conformal field theories of the generic affine-Virasoro construction, and the spin-two gauged g/h coset constructions.     Hamiltonian Formulation of Open WZW Strings

    Using a Hamiltonian approach, we construct the classical and quantum theory of open WZW strings on a strip. (These are the strings which end on WZW branes.) The development involves non-abelian generalized Dirichlet images in an essential way. At the classical level, we find a new non-commutative geometry in which the equal-time coordinate brackets are non-zero at the world-sheet boundary, and the result is an intrinsically non-abelian effect which vanishes in the abelian limit. Using the classical theory as a guide to the quantum theory, we also find the operator algebra and the analogue of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for the the conformal field theory of open WZW strings.Comment: 34 pages.     N=2 structures on solvable Lie algebras: the c=9 classification

    Let G be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra (not necessarily semisimple). It is known that if G is self-dual (that is, if it possesses an invariant metric) then there is a canonical N=1 superconformal algebra associated to its N=1 affinization---that is, it admits an N=1 (affine) Sugawara construction. Under certain additional hypotheses, this N=1 structure admits an N=2 extension. If this is the case, G is said to possess an N=2 structure. It is also known that an N=2 structure on a self-dual Lie algebra G is equivalent to a vector space decomposition G = G_+ \oplus G_- where G_\pm are isotropic Lie subalgebras. In other words, N=2 structures on G are in one-to-one correspondence with Manin triples (G,G_+,G_-). In this paper we exploit this correspondence to obtain a classification of the c=9 N=2 structures on self-dual solvable Lie algebras.     Aspects of Fractional Superstrings

    We investigate some issues relating to recently proposed fractional superstring theories with Dcritical<10D_{\rm critical}<10. Using the factorization approach of Gepner and Qiu, we systematically rederive the partition functions of the K=4, 8,K=4,\, 8, and 1616 theories and examine their spacetime supersymmetry. Generalized GSO projection operators for the K=4K=4 model are found. Uniqueness of the twist field, ϕK/4K/4\phi^{K/4}_{K/4}, as source of spacetime fermions is demonstrated.     “Healthier” and “less healthy” classifications according to three nutrient profiling systems relative to nutrition and health claims on food labels

    A comprehensive sample of breakfast cereals (a total of 221 breakfast cereals available in the market) were compared according to their nutritional composition, being analysed using three nutrient profiling systems to categorise foods as “healthier” or “less healthy”. Differences were further on investigated focusing on the use of nutrition and health claims on the labelling. The aim was to determine how much the use of such a claim corresponds to the categorisation into “healthier” or “less healthy” group. The sample contained 161 (72.9%) items with claims and 60 (27.1%) items, without claims. The nutrient profiles of the foods were determined by the UK Ofcom model, the FSANZ model and the modified Traffic Light model. All the models use similar but nevertheless different ways of determining the final score of “healthier” or “less healthy”. The percentage of foods classified as “healthier” was well below 72.9% (from 24.8% to 52.2%), indicating that profiling with each model involves stricter criteria for the classifying of foods compared to the permission to carry a nutrition and/or health claim. The difference is the most pronounced for the modified Traffic Light system, while the UK Ofcom and FSANZ systems give results closer to the use of claims

    Gravitino condensation in fivebrane backgrounds

    We calculate the tension of the D3-brane in the fivebrane background which is described by the exactly solvable SU(2)_k x U(1) world-sheet conformal field theory with large Kac-Moody level k. The D3-brane tension is extracted from the amplitude of one closed string exchange between two parallel D3-branes, and the amplitude is calculated by utilizing the open-closed string duality. The tension of the D3-brane in the background does not coincide with the one in the flat space-time even in the flat space-time limit: k -> infinity. The finite curvature effect should vanish in the flat space-time limit and only the topological effect can remain. Therefore, the deviation indicates the condensation of gravitino and/or dilatino which has been expected in the fivebrane background as a gravitational instanton.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur

    Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory With Boundary

    The Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) theory with planar boundary is considered. The boundary is introduced according to Symanzik's basic principles of locality and separability. A method of investigation is proposed, which, avoiding the straight computation of correlators, is appealing for situations where the computation of propagators, modified by the boundary, becomes quite complex. For MCS theory, the outcome is that a unique solution exists, in the form of chiral conserved currents, satisfying a Kac-Moody algebra, whose central charge does not depend on the Maxwell term.Comment: 30 page
