    Double-phase transition and giant positive magnetoresistance in the quasi-skutterudite Gd3_3Ir4_4Sn13_{13}

    The magnetic, thermodynamic and electrical/thermal transport properties of the caged-structure quasi-skutterudite Gd3_3Ir4_4Sn13_{13} are re-investigated. The magnetization M(T)M(T), specific heat Cp(T)C_p(T) and the resistivity ρ(T)\rho(T) reveal a double-phase transition -- at TN1T_{N1}\sim 10~K and at TN2T_{N2}\sim 8.8~K -- which was not observed in the previous report on this compound. The antiferromagnetic transition is also visible in the thermal transport data, thereby suggesting a close connection between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in this Sn-based quasi-skutterudite. The temperature dependence of ρ(T)\rho(T) is analyzed in terms of a power-law for resistivity pertinent to Fermi liquid picture. Giant, positive magnetoresistance (MR) \approx 80%\% is observed in Gd3_3Ir4_4Sn13_{13} at 2~K with the application of 9~T. The giant MR and the double magnetic transition can be attributed to the quasi-cages and layered antiferromagnetic structure of Gd3_3Ir4_4Sn13_{13} vulnerable to structural distortions and/or dipolar or spin-reorientation effects. The giant value of MR observed in this class of 3:4:13 type alloys, especially in a Gd-compound, is the highlight of this work.Comment: 20 pages single column, 7 figures, 1 table; Accepted to J.     On the Kramers-Kronig transform with logarithmic kernel for the reflection phase in the Drude model

    We use the Kramers-Kronig transform (KKT) with logarithmic kernel to obtain the reflection phase and, subsequently, the complex refractive index of a bulk mirror from reflectance. However, there remains some confusion regarding the formulation for this analysis. Assuming the damped Drude model for the dielectric constant and the oblique incidence case, we calculate the additional terms: phase at zero frequency and Blashke factor and we propose a reformulated KKT within this model. Absolute reflectance in the s-polarization case of a gold film is measured between 40 and 350 eV for various glancing angles using synchrotron radiation and its complex refractive index is deduced using the reformulated KKT that we propose.     Coherent Oscillations in an Exciton-Polariton Josephson Junction

    We report on the observation of spontaneous coherent oscillations in a microcavity polariton bosonic Josephson junction. The condensation of exciton polaritons takes place under incoherent excitation in a disordered environment, where double potential wells tend to appear in the disordered landscape. Coherent oscillations set on at an excitation power well above the condensation threshold. The time resolved population and phase dynamics reveal the analogy with the AC Josephson effect. We have introduced a theoretical two-mode model to describe the observed effects, which allows us to explain how the different realizations of the pulsed experiment have a similar phase relation

    A model realisation of the Jaffe-Wilczek correlation for pentaquarks

    We discuss a realisation of the pentaquark structure proposed by Jaffe and Wilczek within a simple quark model with colour-spin contact interactions and coloured harmonic confinement, which accurately describes the ΔN\Delta-N splitting. In this model spatially compact diquarks are formed in the pentaquark but no such compact object exists in the nucleon. The colour-spin attraction brings the Jaffe-Wilczek-like state down to a low mass, compatible with the experimental observation and below that of the naive ground state with all SS-waves. We find, however, that although these trends are maintained, the extreme effects observed do not survive the required ``smearing'' of the delta function contact interaction. We also demonstrate the weakness of the ``schematic'' approximation when applied to a system containing a PP-wave. An estimate of the anti-charmed pentaquark mass is made which is in line with the Jaffe-Wilczek prediction and significantly less than the value reported by the H1 collaboration.Comment: 10 pages, uses psfra

    The effect of multiple paternity on genetic diversity during and after colonisation

    In metapopulations, genetic variation of local populations is influenced by the genetic content of the founders, and of migrants following establishment. We analyse the effect of multiple paternity on genetic diversity using a model in which the highly promiscuous marine snail Littorina saxatilis expands from a mainland to colonise initially empty islands of an archipelago. Migrant females carry a large number of eggs fertilised by 1 - 10 mates. We quantify the genetic diversity of the population in terms of its heterozygosity: initially during the transient colonisation process, and at long times when the population has reached an equilibrium state with migration. During colonisation, multiple paternity increases the heterozygosity by 10 - 300 % in comparison with the case of single paternity. The equilibrium state, by contrast, is less strongly affected: multiple paternity gives rise to 10 - 50 % higher heterozygosity compared with single paternity. Further we find that far from the mainland, new mutations spreading from the mainland cause bursts of high genetic diversity separated by long periods of low diversity. This effect is boosted by multiple paternity. We conclude that multiple paternity facilitates colonisation and maintenance of small populations, whether or not this is the main cause for the evolution of extreme promiscuity in Littorina saxatilis.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, electronic supplementary materia

    Effect of growth conditions on optical properties of CdSe/ZnSe single quantum dots

    In this work, we have investigated the optical properties of two samples of CdSe quantum dots by using submicro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. The effect of vicinal-surface GaAs substrates on their properties has been also assessed. The thinner sample, grown on a substrate with vicinal surface, includes only dots with a diameter of less than 10 nm (type A islands). Islands of an average diameter of about 16 nm (type B islands) that are related to a phase transition via a Stranski-Krastanow growth process are also distributed in the thicker sample grown on an oriented substrate. We have studied the evolution of lineshapes of PL spectra for these two samples by improving spatial resolution that was achieved using nanoapertures or mesa structures.     Penrose-Onsager Criterion Validation in a One-Dimensional Polariton Condensate

    We perform quantum tomography on one-dimensional polariton condensates, spontaneously occurring in linear disorder valleys in a CdTe planar microcavity sample. By the use of optical interferometric techniques, we determine the first-order coherence function and the amplitude and phase of the order parameter of the condensate, providing a full reconstruction of the single particle density matrix for the polariton system. The experimental data are used as input to theoretically test the consistency of Penrose-Onsager criterion for Bose-Einstein condensation in the framework of nonequilibrium polariton condensates. The results confirm the pertinence and validity of the criterion for a non equilibrium condensed gas.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
