Employing and Accommodating Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries
This brochure on individuals with spinal cord injuries and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of a series on human resources practices and workplace accommodations for persons with disabilities edited by Susanne M. The nature of the ISM in galaxies during the star-formation activity peak of the Universe
We combine a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation, tracking atomic and
molecular phases of cold gas, with a three-dimensional radiative-transfer and
line tracing code to study the sub-mm emission from atomic and molecular
species (CO, HCN, [CI], [CII], [OI]) in galaxies. We compare the physics that
drives the formation of stars at the epoch of peak star formation (SF) in the
Universe (z = 2.0) with that in local galaxies. We find that normal
star-forming galaxies at high redshift have much higher CO-excitation peaks
than their local counterparts and that CO cooling takes place at higher
excitation levels. CO line ratios increase with redshift as a function of
galaxy star-formation rate, but are well correlated with H2 surface density
independent of redshift. We find an increase in the [OI]/[CII] line ratio in
typical star-forming galaxies at z = 1.2 and z = 2.0 with respect to
counterparts at z = 0. Our model results suggest that typical star-forming
galaxies at high redshift consist of much denser and warmer star-forming clouds
than their local counterparts. Galaxies belonging to the tail of the SF
activity peak at z = 1.2 are already less dense and cooler than counterparts
during the actual peak of SF activity (z = 2.0). We use our results to discuss
how future ALMA surveys can best confront our predictions and constrain models

The Learning Theories Profile: A metacognitive tool for reflecting on professional practice
The Learning Theories Profile (LTP) supports professionals to locate various learning theories within four epistemological quadrants of the Matrix of Perspectives. Professionals can use this tool to identify some of the theories they hold and to reflect on the alignment between their espoused theories and theories-in-use. Forty-four Resource Teachers used the LTP and demonstrated that they were guided by a range of theories, most commonly interactive theories. A strong relationship was observed between espoused and in-use theories. Participants’ responses indicated the positive value of the LTP for supporting professionals to analyse and optimise interaction occurring in complex contexts of practice
Mister Mary Somerville: Husband and Secretary
Mary Somerville’s life as a mathematician and savant in nineteenth-century Great Britain was heavily influenced by her gender; as a woman, her access to the ideas and resources developed and circulated in universities and scientific societies was highly restricted. However, her engagement with learned institutions was by no means nonexistent, and although she was 90 before being elected a full member of any society (Società Geografica Italiana, 1870), Somerville (Figure 1) nevertheless benefited from the resources and social networks cultivated by such institutions from as early as 1812. A key intermediary between Somerville and these societies was her husband, Dr. William Somerville, whose mediation was vital to her access to knowledge and her subsequent career as a scientific author. In this paper we will consider how spousal cooperation enabled the overcoming of gendered barriers to scientific institutions in the nineteenth century
