    Optical links in the angle-data assembly of the 70-meter antennas

    In the precision-pointing mode the 70 meter antennas utilize an optical link provided by an autocollimator. In an effort to improve reliability and performance, commercial instruments were evaluated as replacement candidates, and upgraded versions of the existing instruments were designed and tested. The latter were selected for the Neptune encounter, but commercial instruments with digital output show promise of significant performance improvement for the post-encounter period

    Kinetic Roughening in Growth Models with Diffusion in Higher Dimensions

    We present results of numerical simulations of kinetic roughening for a growth model with surface diffusion (the Wolf-Villain model) in 3+1 and 4+1~dimensions using lattices of a linear size up to L=64L=64 in 3+1~D and L=32L=32 in 4+1~D. The effective exponents calculated both from the surface width and from the height--height correlation function are much larger than those expected based on results in lower dimensions, due to a growth instability which leads to the evolution of large mounded structures on the surface. An increase of the range for incorporation of a freshly deposited particle leads to a decrease of the roughness but does not suppress the instability.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX 2.09, IC-DDV-93-00

    Acoustic-loads research for powered-lift configurations

    Data presented from large-scale model tests with jet engines having thrusts of 9 kN (2000 lb) and 36 kN (8000 lb) include acoustic loads for an externally blown wing and flap induced by a TF34 jet engine, an upper surface blown (USB) aircraft model in a wind tunnel, and two USB models in static tests. Comparisons of these results with results from acoustic loads studies on configurations of other sizes are made and the implications of these results on interior noise and acoustic fatigue are discussed

    Multifractal eigenstates of quantum chaos and the Thue-Morse sequence

    We analyze certain eigenstates of the quantum baker's map and demonstrate, using the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the emergence of the ubiquitous Thue-Morse sequence, a simple sequence that is at the border between quasi-periodicity and chaos, and hence is a good paradigm for quantum chaotic states. We show a family of states that are also simply related to Thue-Morse sequence, and are strongly scarred by short periodic orbits and their homoclinic excursions. We give approximate expressions for these states and provide evidence that these and other generic states are multifractal.Comment: Substantially modified from the original, worth a second download.     Scaling of Local Slopes, Conservation Laws and Anomalous Roughening in Surface Growth

    We argue that symmetries and conservation laws greatly restrict the form of the terms entering the long wavelength description of growth models exhibiting anomalous roughening. This is exploited to show by dynamic renormalization group arguments that intrinsic anomalous roughening cannot occur in local growth models.
