    Hunting Local Mixmaster Dynamics in Spatially Inhomogeneous Cosmologies

    Heuristic arguments and numerical simulations support the Belinskii et al (BKL) claim that the approach to the singularity in generic gravitational collapse is characterized by local Mixmaster dynamics (LMD). Here, one way to identify LMD in collapsing spatially inhomogeneous cosmologies is explored. By writing the metric of one spacetime in the standard variables of another, signatures for LMD may be found. Such signatures for the dynamics of spatially homogeneous Mixmaster models in the variables of U(1)-symmetric cosmologies are reviewed. Similar constructions for U(1)-symmetric spacetimes in terms of the dynamics of generic T2T^2-symmetric spacetime are presented.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures.     We obtain a global existence result for the Einstein equations. We show that in the maximal Cauchy development of vacuum T2T^2 symmetric initial data with nonvanishing twist constant, except for the special case of flat Kasner initial data, the area of the T2T^2 group orbits takes on all positive values. This result shows that the areal time coordinate RR which covers these spacetimes runs from zero to infinity, with the singularity occurring at R=0.Comment: The appendix which appears in version 1 has a technical problem (the inequality appearing as the first stage of (52) is not necessarily true), and since the appendix is unnecessary for the proof of our results, we leave it out. version 2 -- clarifications added, version 3 -- reference correcte

    A second order, O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics of the two particle inclusive cross section is presented for the reaction p+pˉγ+c+Xp +\bar{p}\rightarrow \gamma + c + X for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. The combination of analytic and Monte Carlo integration methods used here to perform phase-space integrations facilitates imposition of photon isolation restrictions and other selections of relevance in experiments.     Harmonic coordinate method for simulating generic singularities

    This paper presents both a numerical method for general relativity and an application of that method. The method involves the use of harmonic coordinates in a 3+1 code to evolve the Einstein equations with scalar field matter. In such coordinates, the terms in Einstein's equations with the highest number of derivatives take a form similar to that of the wave equation. The application is an exploration of the generic approach to the singularity for this type of matter.     Conductance quantization in mesoscopic graphene

    Using a generalized Landauer approach we study the non-linear transport in mesoscopic graphene with zig-zag and armchair edges. We find that for clean systems, the low-bias low-temperature conductance, G, of an armchair edge system in quantized as G/t=4 n e^2/h, whereas for a zig-zag edge the quantization changes to G/t t=4(n+1/2)e^2/h, where t is the transmission probability and n is an integer. We also study the effects of a non-zero bias, temperature, and magnetic field on the conductance. The magnetic field dependence of the quantization plateaus in these systems is somewhat different from the one found in the two-dimensional electron gas due to a different Landau level quantization.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures.     Variations in D/H and D/O from New FUSE Observations

    We use data obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to determine the interstellar abundances of DI, NI, OI, FeII, and H2 along the sigh tlines to WD1034+001, BD+393226, and TD132709. Our main focus is on determining the D/H, N/H, O/H, and D/O ratios along these sightlines, with log N(H) > 20.0, that probe gas well outside of the Local Bubble. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archival data are used to determine the HI column densities along the WD1034+001 and TD132709 sightlines, respectively. For BD+393226, a previously published N(HI) is used. We find (D/H)x10^5 = 2.14 + 0.53 - 0.45, 1.17 + 0.31 - 0.25, and 1.86 + 0.53 - 0.43, and (D/O)x10^2 = 6.31 + 1.79 - 1.38, 5.62 + 1.61 - 1.31, and 7.59 + 2.17 - 1.76, for the WD1034+001, BD+393226, and TD132709 sightlines, respectively (all 1 si gma). The scatter in these three D/H ratios exemplifies the scatter that has been found by other authors for sightlines with column densities in the range 19.2 < log N(H) < 20.7. The D/H ratio toward WD1034+001 and all the D/O ratios derived here are inconsistent with the Local Bubble value and are some of the highest in the literature. We discuss the implications of our measurements for the determination of the present-epoch abundance of deuterium, and for the different scenarios that try to explain the D/H variations. We present a study of D/H as a function of the average sightline gas density, using the ratios derived in this work as well as ratios from the literature, which suggests that D/H decreases with increasing gas volume density. Similar behaviors by other elements such Fe and Si have been interpreted as the result of depletion into dust grains.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap
