An Economic analysis of the potential for precision farming in UK cereal production
The results from alternative spatial nitrogen application studies are analysed in economic terms and compared to the costs of precision farming hardware, software and other services for cereal crops in the UK. At current prices, the benefits of variable rate application of nitrogen exceed the returns from a uniform application by an average of Ā£22 haā1 The cost of the precision farming systems range from Ā£5 to Ā£18 haā1 depending upon the system chosen for an area of 250 ha. The benefits outweigh the associated costs for cereal farms in excess of 80 ha for the lowest price system to 200ā300 ha for the more sophisticated systems. The scale of benefits obtained depends upon the magnitude of the response to the treatment and the proportion of the field that will respond. To be cost effective, a farmed area of 250 ha of cereals, where 30% of the area will respond to variable treatment, requires an increase in crop yield in the responsive areas of between 0Ā·25 and 1.00 t haā1 (at Ā£65 tā1) for the basic and most expensive precision farming systems, respectively
On the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement
We construct two combinatorially equivalent line arrangements in the complex
projective plane such that the fundamental groups of their complements are not
isomorphic. The proof uses a new invariant of the fundamental group of the
complement to a line arrangement of a given combinatorial type with respect to
isomorphisms inducing the canonical isomorphism of the first homology groups.Comment: 12 pages, Latex2e with AMSLaTeX 1.2, no figures; this last version is

Regulation of protein kinase B and glycogen synthase kinase-3 by insulin and beta-adrenergic agonists in rat epididymal fat cells - Activation of protein kinase B by wortmannin-sensitive and -insensittve mechanisms
Previous studies using L6 myotubes have suggested that glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is phosphoryl ated and inactivated in response to insulin by protein kinase B (PKB, also known as Akt or RAG) (Cross, D, A, E., Alessi, D, R., Cohen, P., Andjelkovic, M., and Hemmings, B, A. (1995) Nature 378, 785-789), In the present study, marked increases in the activity of PKB have been shown to occur in insulin-treated rat epididymal fat cells with a time course compatible with the observed decrease in GSK-3 activity, Isoproterenol, acting primarily through beta(3)-adrenoreceptors, was found to decrease GSK-3 activity to a similar extent (approximately 50%) to insulin, However, unlike the effect of insulin, the inhibition of GSK by isoproterenol was not found to be sensitive to inhibition by the phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase inhibitors, wortmannin or LY 294002, The change in GSK-3 activity brought about by isoproterenol could not be mimicked by the addition of permeant cyclic AMP analogues or forskolin to the cells, although at the concentrations used, these agents were able to stimulate lipolysis. Isoproterenol, but again not the cyclic AMP analogues, was found to increase the activity of PKB, although to a lesser extent than insulin. While wortmannin abolished the stimulation of PKB activity by insulin, it was without effect on the activation seen in response to isoproterenol, The activation of PKB by isoproterenol was not accompanied by any detectable change in the electrophoretic mobility of the protein on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It would therefore appear that distinct mechanisms exist for the stimulation of PKB by insulin and isoproterenol in rat fat cells
Pepper-pot emittance measurement of laser-plasma wakefield accelerated electrons
The transverse emittance is an important parameter governing the brightness of an electron beam. Here we present the first pepper-pot measurement of the transverse emittance for a mono-energetic electron beam from a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator, carried out on the Advanced Laser-Plasma High Energy Accelerators towards X-Rays (ALPHA-X) beam line. Mono-energetic electrons are passed through an array of 52 mu m diameter holes in a tungsten mask. The pepper-pot results set an upper limit for the normalised emittance at 5.5 +/- 1 pi mm mrad for an 82 MeV beam
Towards More Data-Aware Application Integration (extended version)
Although most business application data is stored in relational databases,
programming languages and wire formats in integration middleware systems are
not table-centric. Due to costly format conversions, data-shipments and faster
computation, the trend is to "push-down" the integration operations closer to
the storage representation.
We address the alternative case of defining declarative, table-centric
integration semantics within standard integration systems. For that, we replace
the current operator implementations for the well-known Enterprise Integration
Patterns by equivalent "in-memory" table processing, and show a practical
realization in a conventional integration system for a non-reliable,
"data-intensive" messaging example. The results of the runtime analysis show
that table-centric processing is promising already in standard, "single-record"
message routing and transformations, and can potentially excel the message
throughput for "multi-record" table messages.Comment: 18 Pages, extended version of the contribution to British

Chirped pulse Raman amplification in plasma
Raman amplification in plasma has been proposed to be a promising method of amplifying short radiation pulses. Here, we investigate chirped pulse Raman amplification (CPRA) where the pump pulse is chirped and leads to spatiotemporal distributed gain, which exhibits superradiant scaling in the linear regime, usually associated with the nonlinear pump depletion and Compton amplification regimes. CPRA has the potential to serve as a high-efficiency high-fidelity amplifier/compressor stage
Quantum Physics and Computers
Recent theoretical results confirm that quantum theory provides the
possibility of new ways of performing efficient calculations. The most striking
example is the factoring problem. It has recently been shown that computers
that exploit quantum features could factor large composite integers. This task
is believed to be out of reach of classical computers as soon as the number of
digits in the number to factor exceeds a certain limit. The additional power of
quantum computers comes from the possibility of employing a superposition of
states, of following many distinct computation paths and of producing a final
output that depends on the interference of all of them. This ``quantum
parallelism'' outstrips by far any parallelism that can be thought of in
classical computation and is responsible for the ``exponential'' speed-up of
computation.
This is a non-technical (or at least not too technical) introduction to the
field of quantum computation. It does not cover very recent topics, such as
error-correction.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, 8 PostScript figures embedded. A bug in one of the

An ultrashort pulse ultra-violet radiation undulator source driven by a laser plasma wakefield accelerator
Narrow band undulator radiation tuneable over the wavelength range of 150ā260ānm has been produced by short electron bunches from a 2āmm long laser plasma wakefield accelerator based on a 20āTW femtosecond laser system. The number of photons measured is up to 9āĆā106 per shot for a 100 period undulator, with a mean peak brilliance of 1āĆā1018 photons/s/mrad2/mm2/0.1% bandwidth. Simulations estimate that the driving electron bunch r.m.s. duration is as short as 3 fs when the electron beam has energy of 120ā130āMeV with the radiation pulse duration in the range of 50ā100 fs
Computing a Knot Invariant as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem
We point out the connection between mathematical knot theory and spin
glass/search problem. In particular, we present a statistical mechanical
formulation of the problem of computing a knot invariant; p-colorability
problem, which provides an algorithm to find the solution. The method also
allows one to get some deeper insight into the structural complexity of knots,
which is expected to be related with the landscape structure of constraint
satisfaction problem.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to short note in Journal of Physical
