Factors associated with seizure severity among children with epilepsy in Northern Nigeria

Objective: To describe how seizure severity in children with epilepsy may be affected by certain socio-demographic and clinical variablesDesign: A cross-sectional studySetting: At the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, NigeriaParticipants: Sixty children and adolescents who were being followed up for seizure disorder at the child neurology clinicIntervention: Information on socio-demographic characteristics was obtained with a questionnaire, details of neuro-logical co-morbidities were extracted from the participants’ records, and seizure severity was assessed with the Na-tional Hospital Seizure Severity Score 3 tool.Main Outcome Measure: Chi-square test was used to establish the relationship between categorical variables, while the Independent t-test was used in describing the differences between means. Simple linear regression was calculated to assess the predictability of seizure severity.Result: The median age was ten years (IQR = 6-13 years), with a male dominance (1.5:1). The Seizure Severity Score (SSS) ranged between 3 and 24 units, with a mean of 12.22 ± 4.29 units. The only characteristic that had a significant association with SSS on bivariate analysis was the “presence of co-morbidities” (p=0.019). A simple linear regression revealed that the presence of a neurological co-morbidity predicted an increase in the SSS by 2.67 units. This knowledge may influence prognostication and the charting of a treatment trajectory

Mucormycosis: 2 Case Report

Mucormycosis is a rare, saprophytic, invasive and fulminant fungal disease. It is infective to patients with underlying immunocompromised conditions. We presented two cases of mucormycosis, one of which occured in the nose and the other on the auricle. A two-year-old female patient with diabetic ketoacidosis revealed necrosis and surrounding hyperemia in the nasal vestibule, nasal septum and dorsum of nose. A 17-year-old female diabetic patient had been suffering from black-colored lesion on the auricle. Physical examination presented necrosis on the auricle. Facial paralysis occured in the patient with auricular mucormycosis. Systemic amphotericin B was empirically administered after the sample was obtained for microbiologic and histopathologic examination in both patients. Necrotic tissues was also debrided in the second patient. The first patient died on the second day of treatment, and the second patient on the seventh day. We discussed the bacteriologic characteristics, histological peculiarities, and alternative treatments

METODE ANALITICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS (AHP) DALAM PENENTUAN LOKASI HOME INDUSTRI DI KABUPATEN PRINGSEWU

Home berarti rumah, tempat tinggal, ataupun kampung halaman. Sedang Industry, dapat diartikan sebagai kerajinan, usaha produk barang dan ataupun perusahaan. Singkatnya, Home Industry adalah rumah usaha produk barang atau juga perusahaan kecil. Dikatakan sebagai perusahaan kecil karena jenis kegiatan ekonomi ini dipusatkan di rumah. Dengan menentukan lokasi industri dibutuhkan beberapa faktor penentu dari beberapa kriteria yang telah ditentukan. Penelitian ini mengembankan sistem pendukung keputusan (SPK) dengan memanfaatkan metode analytical hierarchy proses (AHP)  sebgai proses penentuan lokasi industri di Kabupaten Pringsewu. Dalam proses seleksi ini degunakan beberapa faktor dari kriteria untuk menentukan lokasi industri yang mana akan ditentukan untuk dibangunnya sebuah industri, SPK ini membantu dalam menentukan lokasi mana yang akan di pilih. Penelitian ini lebih menitik beratkan kepada bagaiman merancang dan mengimplementasikan aplikasi super dicision serta dimaksudkan agar memudahkan dalam hal perhitungan. AHP digunakan sebagai metode dalam perhitungan dalam pemilihan lokasi industri
