The Evolution of Difficult Childbirth and Helpless Hominin Infants
Because of the implications for behavioral, social, and cultural evolution, reconstructions of the evolutionary history of human parturition are driven by two main questions: First, when did childbirth become difficult? And second, does difficult childbirth have something to do with infant helplessness? Here we review the available evidence and consider answers to these questions. Charge density wave in the spin ladder of SrCaCuO
We consider a multiband charge transfer model for a single spin ladder
describing the holes in SrCaCuO. Using Hartree-Fock
approximation we show how the charge density wave, with its periodicity
dependent on doping as recently observed in the experiment, can be stabilized

Robust designs for Poisson regression models
We consider the problem of how to construct robust designs for Poisson regression models. An analytical expression is derived for robust designs for first-order Poisson regression models where uncertainty exists in the prior parameter estimates. Given certain constraints in the methodology, it may be necessary to extend the robust designs for implementation in practical experiments. With these extensions, our methodology constructs designs which perform similarly, in terms of estimation, to current techniques, and offers the solution in a more timely manner. We further apply this analytic result to cases where uncertainty exists in the linear predictor. The application of this methodology to practical design problems such as screening experiments is explored. Given the minimal prior knowledge that is usually available when conducting such experiments, it is recommended to derive designs robust across a variety of systems. However, incorporating such uncertainty into the design process can be a computationally intense exercise. Hence, our analytic approach is explored as an alternative
Spin Dynamics in the Magnetic Chains Arrays of Sr14Cu24O41: a Neutron Inelastic scattering Investigation
Below about 150 K, the spin arrangement in the chain arrays of Sr14Cu24O41 is
shown to develop in two dimensions (2D). Both the correlations and the
dispersion of the observed elementary excitations agree well with a model of
interacting dimers. Along the chains, the intra- and inter-dimer distances are
equal to 2 and about 3 times the distance (c) between neighboring Cu ions.
While the intra-dimer coupling is J about 10 meV, the inter-dimer couplings
along and between the chains are of comparable strenght, J// about -1.1 meV and
Jperp about 1.7 meV, respectively. This remarkable 2D arrangement satisfies the
formal Cu valence of the undoped compound. Our data suggest also that it is
associated with a relative sliding of one chain with respect to the next one,
which, as T decreases, develops in the chain direction. A qualitative analysis
shows that nearest inter-dimer spin correlations are ferromagnetic, which, in

The Intersections of Race, Gender, Age, and Socioeconomic Status: Implications for Reporting Discrimination and Attributions to Discrimination.
This study employed an intersectional approach (operationalized as the combination of more than one social identity) to examine the relationship between aspects of social identity (i.e., race, gender, age, SES), self-reported level of mistreatment, and attributions for discrimination. Self-reported discrimination has been researched extensively and there is substantial evidence of its association with adverse physical and psychological health outcomes. Few studies, however, have examined the relationship of multiple demographic variables (including social identities) to overall levels self-reported mistreatment as well the selection of attributions for discrimination. A diverse community sample (N = 292; 42.12% Black; 47.26% male) reported on experiences of discrimination using the Everyday Discrimination Scale. General linear models were used to test the effect of sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., race, gender, age, SES) on total discrimination score and on attributions for discrimination. To test for intersectional relationships, we tested the effect of two-way interactions of sociodemographic characteristics on total discrimination score and attributions for discrimination. We found preliminary support for intersectional effects, as indicated by a significant race by age interaction on the selection of the race attribution for discrimination; gender by SES on the age attribution; age by gender on the education attribution; and race by SES on the economic situation attribution. Our study extends prior work by highlighting the importance of testing more than one factor as contributing to discrimination, particularly when examining to what sources individuals attribute discrimination
Single-crystal growth and dependences on the hole concentration and magnetic field of the magnetic ground state in the edge-sharing CuO chain system CaYCuO
We have succeeded in growing large-size single-crystals of
CaYCuO with and measured the
magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetization curve, in order to
study the magnetic ground state in the edge-sharing CuO chain as a function
of hole concentration and magnetic field. In , it has been
found that an antiferromagnetically ordered phase with the magnetic easy axis
along the b-axis is stabilized and that a spin-flop transition occurs by the
application of magnetic fields parallel to the b-axis. The antiferromagnetic
transition temperature decreases with increasing and disappears around 1.4. Alternatively, a spin-glass phase appears around . At where the hole concentration is 1/3 per Cu, it appears that a
spin-gap state is formed owing to the formation of spin-singlet pairs. No sign
of the coexistence of an antiferromagnetically ordered state and a spin-gap one
suggested in CaCuO has been found in

The efficacy of attentional distraction and sensory monitoring in chronic pain patients:A meta-analysis
Attentional strategies, such as distraction and sensory monitoring, are often offered to reduce pain and pain-related distress. However, evidence for their efficacy in chronic pain patients is equivocal. We report a meta-analysis on the efficacy of distraction and sensory monitoring in chronic pain patients, and explore possible methodological and theoretical moderators. The scientific literature was searched for relevant articles, which were coded for methodological quality and several theoretical and methodological moderator variables. Only 10 articles fulfilled the search criteria. Eight studies allowed us to compare distraction with a control condition, two studies to compare sensory monitoring with a control condition, and four studies to compare the effect of distraction with the effect of sensory monitoring. Overall, results indicate that distraction did not differ from control in altering pain experience (k=8; Hedges’ g=0.10, ns) and distress (k=2; Hedges’ g=0.549). Sensory monitoring did also not alter pain experience (k=2; Hedges’ g=-.21, ns) and distress (k=1; Hedges’ g=-0.191, ns). We found no evidence to support the superiority of distraction or sensory monitoring in altering pain compared to control conditions. We offer guidance for future theory-driven research to investigate distraction and sensory monitoring in this largely unexplored field, albeit one replete with methodological difficulties
Phases of two coupled Luttinger liquids
A model of two interacting one--dimensional fermion systems (``Luttinger
liquids'') coupled by single--particle hopping is investigated. Bosonization
allows a number of exact statements to be made. In particular, for forward
scattering only, the model contains two massless boson sectors and an Ising
type critical sector. For general interactions, there is a spin excitation gap
and either s-- or d--type pairing fluctuations dominate. It is shown that the
same behavior is also found for strong interactions. A possible scenario for
