    Event-by-event fluctuations in heavy ion collisions

    We discuss the physics underlying event-by-event fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions.     Behavior modification in special classes

    The purpose of this paper was to encourage the use of behavior modification in special classes as a substantial aid to present-day needs. It briefly reviews the compelling need for improvement in special education, especially in the two areas of social maturity and motivation. It suggests that behavior modification may be the answer to these needs. It briefly treats some of the objections to the use of behavior modification. However, the main part of this paper was directed toward: (1) an examination of principles concerning behavior modification, (2) a review of techniques currently being practiced, (3) a discussion of these techniques in the light of the principles presented, and (4) a suggestion toward solving the problem of internalizing behavior modification gains

    Exponentially growing solutions in homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard convection

    It is shown that homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard flow, i.e., Rayleigh-Benard turbulence with periodic boundary conditions in all directions and a volume forcing of the temperature field by a mean gradient, has a family of exact, exponentially growing, separable solutions of the full non-linear system of equations. These solutions are clearly manifest in numerical simulations above a computable critical value of the Rayleigh number. In our numerical simulations they are subject to secondary numerical noise and resolution dependent instabilities that limit their growth to produce statistically steady turbulent transport.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys.     Validity of a contact mat and accelerometric system to assess countermovement jump from flight time

    Countermovement jump (CMJ) height is an important parameter in physical performance. This study compared CMJ height measured using ChronoJump contact mat (CJ) and Myotest accelerometer (MT) systems with a force platform (FP). Thirty recreationally active adults (32.1 ± 10.4 years, 75.9 ± 12.0 kg, 173.2 ± 6.3 cm) completed a CMJ protocol where height was simultaneously recorded using the three systems. CJ and MT measures were strongly and significant correlated (r = 0.65, 0.66, respectively; p  0.05), yet MT-derived measures were significantly different from those obtained using the FP (p < 0.05). Systematic bias was observed between FP and the CJ and between FP and MT. This study demonstrates the validity of CJ and MT systems for the assessment of CMJ height. Systematic bias and between-device differences in measurement should be considered when interpreting and comparing data from these devices

    Fuel treated at the turbine and the turbine exhaust gas processed at the turbine site are studied. Fuel treatments protect the turbine from contaminants or impurities either in the upgrading fuel as produced or picked up by the fuel during normal transportation. Exhaust gas treatments provide for the reduction of NOx and SOx to environmentally acceptable levels. The impact of fuel quality upon turbine maintenance and deterioration is considered. On site costs include not only the fuel treatment costs as such, but also incremental costs incurred by the turbine operator if a turbine fuel of low quality is not acceptably upgraded

    Coherent State path-integral simulation of many particle systems

    The coherent state path integral formulation of certain many particle systems allows for their non perturbative study by the techniques of lattice field theory. In this paper we exploit this strategy by simulating the explicit example of the diffusion controlled reaction A+A→0A+A\to 0. Our results are consistent with some renormalization group-based predictions thus clarifying the continuum limit of the action of the problem.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. Minor corrections.
