    Doing being an ordinary technology and social media user

    This paper uses discourse and conversation analysis of naturally-occuring conversations to describe how participants construct themselves as “ordinary” users of communication technologies—devices such as mobile phones, their communicative affordances, and the mediated interaction they enable (e.g., access to online communication via social media platforms). The three practices analyzed are (1) managing motivations by downplaying interest and stake in using technology and participating in online activities; (2) calibrating quantities of one's time and involvement using social media; (3) identifying investments in social media use through categories and identities that position users as appropriate or inappropriate. These techniques comprise an accounting practice that accomplishes identity construction in service of situated social actions to manage the moral implications of communication technology use

    Providing epistemic support for assessments through mobile-supported sharing activities

    This paper examines how participants in face-to-face conversation employ mobile phones as a resource for social action. We focus on what we call mobile-supported sharing activities, in which participants use a mobile phone to share text or images with others by voicing text aloud from their mobile or providing others with visual access to the device’s display screen. Drawing from naturalistic video recordings, we focus on how mobile-supported sharing activities invite assessments by providing access to an object that is not locally accessible to the participants. Such practices make relevant co-participants’ assessment of these objects and allow for different forms of co-participation across sequence types. We additionally examine how the organization of assessments during these sharing activities displays sensitivity to preference structure. The analysis illustrates the relevance of embodiment, local objects, and new communicative technologies to the production of action in co-present interaction. Data are in American English

    Fidelity of Quantum Interferometers

    For a generic interferometer, the conditional probability density distribution, p(ϕm)p(\phi|m), for the phase ϕ\phi given measurement outcome mm, will generally have multiple peaks. Therefore, the phase sensitivity of an interferometer cannot be adequately characterized by the standard deviation, such as Δϕ1/N\Delta\phi\sim 1/\sqrt{N} (the standard limit), or Δϕ1/N\Delta\phi\sim 1/N (the Heisenberg limit). We propose an alternative measure of phase sensitivity--the fidelity of an interferometer--defined as the Shannon mutual information between the phase shift ϕ\phi\ and the measurement outcomes mm. As an example application of interferometer fidelity, we consider a generic optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer, used as a sensor of a classical field. We find the surprising result that an entangled {\it N00N} state input leads to a lower fidelity than a Fock state input, for the same photon number.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Distribuição espacial da meiofauna no entorno de uma plataforma de produção de petróleo na bacia de Santos, norte de Santa Catarina

    The spatial distribution of meiofauna in the outer continental shelf of Santa Catarina was studied from samples collected around an oil production platform on the south of Santos’ Basin. A total of 14 taxa were identified. Bivalvia were the most representative in abundance, representing 47.2% of the total of individuals counted, followed by Nematoda (19,1%), Gastropoda (12,1%), Ostracoda (8,3%), Polychaeta (6,7%), and Copepoda Harpacticoida (4,3%). Others groups like Turbellaria, Oligochaeta, Kinorhyncha, Tardigrada, Tanaidacea, Aplacophora, Isopoda Gnathiidae and Acari Halacaridea were also found and represented together 1,8% of the meiofauna sampled. The total density of organisms varied from 49 ind./10 cm2 to 2 ind./10 cm2 . The community structure showed a pattern that decreased density as approaching the oil platform.     Development of a Health Promotion Program: Targeting Adolescent Behaviors and Attitudes Toward Prescription Opioids

    The current opioid epidemic kills an estimated four people every day in Massachusetts and is considered one of the greatest health threats to adolescents. Massachusetts state data indicates opioid addiction is a public health crisis, which requires the development of a health promotion program for adolescents and legislative action. The innovative eight-week middle school-based program Promote Opioid Prevention Program 4 Youth (POPPY) is implemented during Health and Wellness classes. POPPY is based on the Social Cognitive Theory, focusing on environmental and health behaviors. The goals of this distinct program are to: reduce adolescents\u27 misuse of prescription opioid medication, increase adolescents\u27 self-efficacy to make healthy decisions regarding misuse of prescription opioid medication, and to foster an environment conducive to preventing misuse of prescription opioid medication, while building social and self-management skills. The POPPY health promotion program will provide education that leads to development of health-related decision-making skills. Ultimately, healthier decisions lead to a reduction in opioid misuse risk factors such as peer pressure, social influence, curiosity, and experimentation. Protecting youth from health risks is critical to preventing fatalities associated with chronic conditions such as drug addiction that can lead to the onset of other major illnesses later-on in adulthood

    The presence of endotoxin activity in cases of experimentally-induced heartwater in sheep

    The presence of endotoxin was examined in 5 sheep with experimentally-induced heartwater. Two peaks in endotoxin levels were recorded in 4 out of the 5 sheep during the acute stage of the disease. The 1st peak coincided with or occurred shortly after the febrile reaction (over 40 °C). The 2nd peak occurred 3-5 days after the 1st, and in 2 sheep this 2nd elevation in endotoxin levels was associated with severe clinical signs (rapid and laboured breathing, cyanosis and recumbency), and 1 of the 2 sheep died on the day of the 2nd elevation.     Heterovalent and A-atom effects in A(B'B'')O3 perovskite alloys

    Using first-principles supercell calculations, we have investigated energetic, structural and dielectric properties of three different A(B'B'')O_3 perovskite alloys: Ba(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3 (BZN), Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3 (PZN), and Pb(Zr_{1/3}Ti_{2/3})O_3 (PZT). In the homovalent alloy PZT, the energetics are found to be mainly driven by atomic relaxations. In the heterovalent alloys BZN and PZN, however, electrostatic interactions among B' and B'' atoms are found to be very important. These electrostatic interactions are responsible for the stabilization of the observed compositional long-range order in BZN. On the other hand, cell relaxations and the formation of short Pb--O bonds could lead to a destabilization of the same ordered structure in PZN. Finally, comparing the dielectric properties of homovalent and heterovalent alloys, the most dramatic difference arises in connection with the effective charges of the B' atom. We find that the effective charge of Zr in PZT is anomalous, while in BZN and PZN the effective charge of Zn is close to its nominal ionic value.Comment: 7 pages, two-column style with 2 postscript figures embedded.     Experimenter Effects on Pain Reporting in Women Vary across the Menstrual Cycle

    Background. Separate lines of research have shown that menstrual cycling and contextual factors such as the gender of research personnel influence experimental pain reporting. Objectives. This study examines how brief, procedural interactions with female and male experimenters can affect experimentally reported pain (cold pressor task, CPT) across the menstrual cycle. Methods. Based on the menstrual calendars 94 naturally cycling women and 38 women using hormonal contraceptives (Mage=19.83,  SD=3.09) were assigned to low and high fertility groups. This assignment was based on estimates of their probability of conception given their current cycle day. Experimenters (12 males, 7 females) engaged in minimal procedural interactions with participants before the CPT was performed in solitude. Results. Naturally cycling women in the high fertility group showed significantly higher pain tolerance (81 sec, d=.79) following interactions with a male but not a female experimenter. Differences were not found for women in the low fertility or contraceptive groups. Discussion. The findings illustrate that menstrual functioning moderates the effect that experimenter gender has on pain reporting in women. Conclusion. These findings have implications for standardizing pain measurement protocols and understanding how basic biopsychosocial mechanisms (e.g., person-perception systems) can modulate pain experiences

    Saccharomyces cerevisiae chitin biosynthesis activation by N-acetylchitooses depends on size and structure of chito-oligosaccharides

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To explore chitin synthesis initiation, the effect of addition of exogenous oligosaccharides on <it>in vitro </it>chitin synthesis was studied. Oligosaccharides of various natures and lengths were added to a chitin synthase assay performed on a <it>Saccharomyces cerevisiae </it>membrane fraction.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p><it>N</it>-acetylchito-tetra, -penta and -octaoses resulted in 11 to 25% [<sup>14</sup>C]-GlcNAc incorporation into [<sup>14</sup>C]-chitin, corresponding to an increase in the initial velocity. The activation appeared specific to <it>N</it>-acetylchitooses as it was not observed with oligosaccharides in other series, such as beta-(1,4), beta-(1,3) or alpha-(1,6) glucooligosaccharides.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The effect induced by the <it>N</it>-acetylchitooses was a saturable phenomenon and did not interfere with free GlcNAc and trypsin which are two known activators of yeast chitin synthase activity <it>in vitro</it>. The magnitude of the activation was dependent on both oligosaccharide concentration and oligosaccharide size.</p

    Hyperthermia Induces the ER Stress Pathway

    The ER chaperone GRP78/BiP is a homolog of the Hsp70 family of heat shock proteins, yet GRP78/BiP is not induced by heat shock but instead by ER stress. However, previous studies had not considered more physiologically relevant temperature elevation associated with febrile hyperthermia. In this report we examine the response of GRP78/BiP and other components of the ER stress pathway in cells exposed to 40°C.AD293 cells were exposed to 43°C heat shock to confirm inhibition of the ER stress response genes. Five mammalian cell types, including AD293 cells, were then exposed to 40°C hyperthermia for various time periods and induction of the ER stress pathway was assessed.The inhibition of the ER stress pathway by heat shock (43°C) was confirmed. In contrast cells subjected to more mild temperature elevation (40°C) showed either a partial or full ER stress pathway induction as determined by downstream targets of the three arms of the ER stress pathway as well as a heat shock response. Cells deficient for Perk or Gcn2 exhibit great sensitivity to ER stress induction by hyperthermia.The ER stress pathway is induced partially or fully as a consequence of hyperthermia in parallel with induction of Hsp70. These findings suggest that the ER and cytoplasm of cells contain parallel pathways to coordinately regulate adaptation to febrile hyperthermia associated with disease or infection
