Phase Transition Study of Superconducting Microstructures
The presented results are part of a feasibility study of superheated
superconducting microstructure detectors. The microstructures (dots) were
fabricated using thin film patterning techniques with diameters ranging from
m up to m and thickness of m. We used arrays and single
dots to study the dynamics of the superheating and supercooling phase
transitions in a magnetic field parallel to the dot surface. The phase transi-
tions were produced by either varying the applied magnetic field strength at a
constant temperature or changing the bath temperature at a constant field.
Preliminary results on the dynamics of the phase transitions of arrays and

Preliminary thermal-hydraulic design and predicted performance of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor core
The preliminary thermofluids design of the core assemblies of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP) is presented along with the predicted performance for various plant operating conditions. The selected radial blanket assemblies shuffling scheme and the new approach adopted for fuel and blanket assemblies orificing is discussed. Relevant thermofluids parameters (assembly flow rate and mixed mean outlet temperature, fuel rod temperatures, fission gas plenum pressure, etc.) are presented. Highlights of a detailed uncertainties study performed are summarized. This preliminary analysis has shown that the CRBRP core behavior is compatible with design limits and requirements; future developments for a final analysis are outlined. (auth
Deep-well ultrafast manipulation of a SQUID flux qubit
Superconducting devices based on the Josephson effect are effectively used
for the implementation of qubits and quantum gates. The manipulation of
superconducting qubits is generally performed by using microwave pulses with
frequencies from 5 to 15 GHz, obtaining a typical operating clock from 100MHz
to 1GHz. A manipulation based on simple pulses in the absence of microwaves is
also possible. In our system a magnetic flux pulse modifies the potential of a
double SQUID qubit from a symmetric double well to a single deep well
condition. By using this scheme with a Nb/AlOx/Nb system we obtained coherent
oscillations with sub-nanosecond period (tunable from 50ps to 200ps), very fast
with respect to other manipulating procedures, and with a coherence time up to
10ns, of the order of what obtained with similar devices and technologies but
using microwave manipulation. We introduce the ultrafast manipulation
presenting experimental results, new issues related to this approach (such as
the use of a feedback procedure for cancelling the effect of "slow"
fluctuations), and open perspectives, such as the possible use of RSFQ logic

Extinction of Cocaine Self-Administration Reveals Functionally and Temporally Distinct Dopaminergic Signals in the Nucleus Accumbens
SummaryWhile Pavlovian and operant conditioning influence drug-seeking behavior, the role of rapid dopamine signaling in modulating these processes is unknown. During self-administration of cocaine, two dopaminergic signals, measured with 100 ms resolution, occurred immediately before and after the lever press (termed pre- and postresponse dopamine transients). Extinction of self-administration revealed that these two signals were functionally distinct. Preresponse transients, which could reflect the motivation to obtain the drug, did not decline during extinction. Remarkably, postresponse dopamine transients attenuated as extinction progressed, suggesting that they encode the learned association between environmental cues and cocaine. A third type of dopamine transient, not time locked to overt stimuli, decreased in frequency during extinction and correlated with calculated cocaine concentrations. These results show that dopamine release transients involved in different aspects of cocaine self-administration are highly plastic—differentially governed by motivation, learned associations linked with environmental stimuli, and the pharmacological actions of cocaine
Evaluating case studies of community-oriented integrated care.
This paper summarises a ten-year conversation within London Journal of Primary Care about the nature of community-oriented integrated care (COIC) and how to develop and evaluate it. COIC means integration of efforts for combined disease-treatment and health-enhancement at local, community level. COIC is similar to the World Health Organisation concept of a Community-Based Coordinating Hub - both require a local geographic area where different organisations align their activities for whole system integration and develop local communities for health. COIC is a necessary part of an integrated system for health and care because it enables multiple insights into 'wicked problems', and multiple services to integrate their activities for people with complex conditions, at the same time helping everyone to collaborate for the health of the local population. An Optimal Tunable Josephson Element for Quantum Computing
We introduce a three-junction SQUID that can be effectively used as an
optimal tunable element in Josephson quantum computing applications. This
device can replace the simple dc SQUID generally used as tunable element in
this kind of applications, with a series of advantages for the coherence time
and for the tolerance to small errors. We study the device both theoretically
and experimentally at 4.2 K, obtaining a good agreement between the results.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Effect of cosmic rays on the resonant gravitational wave detector NAUTILUS at temperature T=1.5 K
The interaction between cosmic rays and the gravitational wave bar detector
NAUTILUS is experimentally studied with the aluminum bar at temperature of
T=1.5 K. The results are compared with those obtained in the previous runs when
the bar was at T=0.14 K. The results of the run at T = 1.5 K are in agreement
with the thermo-acoustic model; no large signals at unexpected rate are
noticed, unlike the data taken in the run at T = 0.14 K. The observations
suggest a larger efficiency in the mechanism of conversion of the particle
energy into vibrational mode energy when the aluminum bar is in the

Multishell Diffusion MR Tractography Yields Morphological and Microstructural Information of the Anterior Optic Pathway: A Proof-of-Concept Study in Patients with Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
Tractography based on multishell diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) can be used to estimate the course of myelinated white matter tracts and nerves, yielding valuable information regarding normal anatomy and variability. DWI is sensitive to the local tissue microstruc-ture, so tractography can be used to estimate tissue properties within nerve tracts at a resolution of millimeters. This study aimed to test the applicability of the method using a disease with a well-established pattern of myelinated nerve involvement. Eight patients with LHON and 13 age-matched healthy controls underwent tractography of the anterior optic pathway. Diffusion parameters were compared between groups, and for the patient group correlated with clinical/ophthalmological parameters. Tractography established the course of the anterior optic pathway in both patients and controls. Localized changes in fractional anisotropy were observed, and related to estimates of different tissue compartments within the nerve and tract. The proportion of different compartments correlated with markers of disease severity. The method described allows both anatomical localiza-tion and tissue characterization in vivo, permitting both visualization of variation at the individual level and statistical inference at the group level. It provides a valuable adjunct to ex vivo anatomical and histological study of normal variation and disease processes
