    Plant response to solar ultraviolet-B radiation in a southern South American Sphagnum peatland

Plant growth and pigmentation of the moss Sphagnum magellanicum and the vascular plants Empetrum rubrum, Nothofagus antarctica and Tetroncium magellanicum were measured under near-ambient (90% of ambient) and reduced (20%) ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation for three growing seasons in a Sphagnum peatland in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (55°S). 2. Reduction of solar UV-B increased height growth but decreased volumetric density in S. magellanicum so that biomass production was not influenced during the 3 years. The morphology of vascular plants tended not to respond to UV-B reduction. 3. A 10-20% decrease in UV-B-absorbing compounds occurred in T. magellanicum under solar UV-B reduction. No effects were seen on chlorophyll or carotenoids in S. magellanicum, although, for UV-B-absorbing compounds, a significant interaction between UV-B and year suggests some response to solar UV-B reduction. 4. The climate-related growth of the dwarf shrub E. rubrum was assessed retrospectively by correlating an 8-year record of annual stem elongation with macroclimatic factors including solar UV-B and visible radiation, precipitation and temperature. 5. No significant negative correlations were found between annual E. rubrum stem elongation and ambient solar UV-B, the ratio of UV-B: visible radiation, or the 305-nm: 340-nm irradiance ratio for an 8-year record (1990-91 to 1997-98), nor was stem elongation affected by solar UV-B reduction in our experimental field plots after 3 years. 6. The role of solar UV-B radiation on plant growth in Sphagnum peatlands in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, is likely to depend on the severity of stratospheric ozone depletion over the next several decades. The increases in ambient solar UV-B associated with ozone depletion over the last 20 years are less than the difference between our radiation treatments. Therefore, providing that the ozone layer substantially recovers by the middle of this century, only modest effects of increased solar UV-B on plant growth may be expected.Fil: Searles, Peter Stoughton.     The emergence of intensively managed olive plantations in arid, northwestern Argentina requires the efficient use of irrigation water. We evaluated whole tree daily transpiration and soil evaporation throughout the year to better understand the relative importance of these water use components and to calculate actual crop coefficient (Kc) values. Plots in a 7-year-old 'Manzanilla fina' olive grove with 23% canopy cover were either moderately (MI) or highly irrigated (HI) using the FAO method where potential evapotranspiration over grass is multiplied by a given Kc and a coefficient of reduction (Kr). The Kc values employed for the MI and HI treatments were 0.5 and 1.1, respectively, and the Kr was 0.46. Transpiration was estimated by measuring main trunk sap flow using the heat balance method for three trees per treatment. Soil evaporation was measured using six microlysimeters in one plot per treatment. Both parameters were evaluated for 7-10 consecutive days in the fall, winter, mid-spring, summer, and early fall of 2006-2007. Maximum soil evaporation was observed in the summer when maximum demand was combined with maximum surface wetted by the drips and evaporation from the inter-row occurred due to rainfall. Similarly, maximum daily transpiration was observed in mid-spring and summer. Transpiration of MI trees was 30% lower than in HI trees during the summer period. However, this difference in transpiration disappeared when values were adjusted for total leaf area per tree because leaf area was 28% less in the MI trees. Transpiration represented about 70-80% of total crop evapotranspiration (ETc) except when soil evaporation increased due to rainfall events or over-irrigation occurred. We found that daily transpiration per unit leaf area had a positive linear relationship with daily potential evapotranspiration (r2=0.84) when considering both treatments together. But, a strong relationship was also observed between transpiration per unit leaf area and mean air temperature (r2=0.93). Thus, it is possible to predict optimum irrigation requirements for olive groves if tree leaf area and temperature are known. Calculated crop coefficients during the growing season based on the transpiration and soil evaporation values were about 0.65-0.70 and 0.85-0.90 for the MI and HI treatments, respectively.Olive Irrigation Sap flow Stem heat balance Crop coefficient Microlysimeter

    El cultivo del olivo en Argentina tiene su origen en la colonización española, siendo en la localidad de Arauco (La Rioja) donde se realizaron las primeras plantaciones. Queda el Olivo Cuatricentenario como testigo de aquella época (Foto 1). El desarrollo del cultivo no tuvo lugar, sin embargo, hasta finales del siglo XIX, como consecuencia de la fuerte inmigración latina que no encontraba suficiente aceite en el mercado argentino. En 1953 llegaron a estimarse en 7,5 millones los olivos plantados en el país; algunos de estos olivares se mantienen cerca de los cascos urbanos (Foto 2). A partir de 1960 se inició, no obstante, una decadencia de la olivicultura argentina como consecuencia de la competencia con los aceites de girasol y maíz (en teoría más sanos y baratos), lo que provocó la caída de la rentabilidad de las explotaciones y, en consecuencia, el abandono de plantaciones o la reconversión mediante injerto con variedades de mesa o de doble aptitud. En 1984 se cultivaban tan sólo 3,72 millones de plantas, muchas de ellas en condiciones inadecuadas.The origins of olive growing in Argentina can be traced to the Spanish colonisation when the first orchards were planted in Arauco (La Rioja). A 400-yearold specimen survives to this day as testimony to that period (Photo 1). However, it was not until the late 19th century that olive cultivation started to develop to cope with demand from the influx of Italian and Spanish immigrants which supplies from the existing Argentinean market were unable to meet. In 1953 there were estimated to be 7.5 million olive trees in the country, some of which were planted near urban areas (Photo 2). Olive growing started to decline in 1960 as it came up against competition from sunflower and corn oil (theoretically healthier and cheaper). Farm profitability decreased and olive orchards were abandoned or grafted to convert them to table olive or dualpurpose varieties.     Responses to solar ultraviolet-B radiation in a shrub-dominated natural ecosystem of Tierra del Fuego (southern Argentina)

    A study was made of the effects of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) on the growth of the dominant plant species of a shrub-dominated ecosystem in Tierra del Fuego. This part of southern Argentina can be under the direct influence of the Antarctic 'ozone hole' during the austral spring and lingering ozone-depleted air during the summer. The plant community is dominated by an evergreen shrub (Chiliotrichum diffusum) with an herbaceous layer of Gunnera magellanica and Blechnum penna-marina in the interspaces between the shrubs. Inspections of ozone trends indicate that the springtime and summertime ozone column over Tierra del Fuego has decreased by 10-13% from 1978/9 to 1998/9. In a set of well-replicated field plots, solar UV-B was reduced to approximately 15-20% of the ambient UV-B using plastic films. Polyester films were used to attenuate UV-B radiation and UV-transparent films (∼90% UV-B transmission) were used as control. Treatments were imposed during the growing season beginning in 1996 and continued for three complete growing seasons. Stem elongation of the shrub C. diffusum was not affected by UV-B attenuation in any of the three seasons studied. However, frond length of B. penna-marina under attenuated UV-B was significantly greater than that under near-ambient UV-B in all three seasons. Attenuation of solar UV-B also promoted the expansion of G. magellanica leaves in two of the growing seasons. Differences between treatments in leaf or frond length in B. penna-marina and G. magellanica did not exceed 12%. Another significant effect of UV-B attenuation was a promotion of insect herbivory in G. magellanica, with a 25-75% increase in the leaf area consumed. Changes in plant phenology or relative species cover were not detected within the time frame of this study. The results suggest that the increase in UV-B radiation associated with the erosion of the ozone layer might be affecting the functioning of this ecosystem to some degree, particularly by inhibiting the growth of some plant species and by altering plant-insect interactions.Fil: Rousseaux, Maria Cecilia.
