    Energy performance assessment of HVAC systems by inspection and monitoring

    The paper discusses the collection and processing of energy performance data as part of the inspection of HVAC systems, aimed at identifying technically feasible and cost-effective Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECO), as required by EPBD. Case studies developed by the HARMONAC project have shown that low-cost or no-cost ECO’s - mostly related to system operation and management - can be identified with an effective system monitoring. Building Management Systems (BMS) may be a powerful tool for this task, provided their HW and SW architecture is designed with adequate attention to energy monitoring. Dedicated instrumentation – such as electricity meters and temperature loggers – may also be employed as an alternative / integration to BMS monitoring. The paper also discusses the application of data analysis tools – such as “carpet plots” and “energy signatures” – to the identification of component malfunctioning, control problems, inadequate maintenance, or system schedule optimization, and to the evaluation of achieved energy savings

    A novel measurement method for accurate heat accounting in historical buildings

    Nowadays, two different heat accounting methods are available: the direct method, based on heat meters, and the indirect one, based on heat cost allocators. Unfortunately, in existing buildings, due to the plant configuration, heat meters are often technically unfeasible or not cost efficient, whereas heat cost allocators can be easily installed in almost all conditions. At the same time, the indirect method relies on a high number of interconnected devices with installation and operative conditions often variable within the same building and influencing the on-field metrological performances. In this paper, the authors propose a novel "hybrid" method for accurate heat accounting combining the advantages of indirect method with the higher accuracy typical of direct methods. The proposed method has been experimented at INRIM, the primary metrology institute in Italy, assessing the on-field performance in a virtual eight-apartments building. The experimental results show that the proposed method always presents improved accuracy. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Mesoscale texture of cement hydrates

    Strength and other mechanical properties of cement and concrete rely upon the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrates (C-S-H) during cement hydration. Controlling structure and properties of the C-S-H phase is a challenge, due to the complexity of this hydration product and of the mechanisms that drive its precipitation from the ionic solution upon dissolution of cement grains in water. Departing from traditional models mostly focused on length scales above the micrometer, recent research addressed the molecular structure of C-S-H. However, small-angle neutron scattering, electron- microscopy imaging, and nanoindentation experiments suggest that its mesoscale organization, extending over hundreds of nanometers, may be more important. Here we unveil the C-S-H mesoscale texture, a crucial step to connect the fundamental scales to the macroscale of engineering properties. We use simulations that combine information of the nanoscale building units of C-S-H and their effective interactions, obtained from atomistic simulations and experiments, into a statistical physics framework for aggregating nanoparticles. We compute small-angle scattering intensities, pore size distributions, specific surface area, local densities, indentation modulus, and hardness of the material, providing quantitative understanding of different experimental investigations. Our results provide insight into how the heterogeneities developed during the early stages of hydration persist in the structure of C-S-H and impact the mechanical performance of the hardened cement paste. Unraveling such links in cement hydrates can be groundbreaking and controlling them can be the key to smarter mix designs of cementitious materials

    The EcoThermo project: key and innovative aspects

    In this paper we present the most innovative aspects of the EC-FP7 EcoThermo project. The main aim of the project consists on innovating the technique of heat cost allocation in buildings with a centralized heating system, overcoming the heat cost allocator drawbacks for reliability, measurement reproducibility and traceability and contexts of applications. Given the complexity of the project, we will focus on its main aspects, such as the use of a virtual sensor to estimate the radiators heating power, the design of electronic valves fitted out with an energy harvesting system and the original wireless communication protocol

    Through undertaking monitoring and measurement of the energy use in 42 AC systems and their components in 8 EU Member States, HARMONAC has been able to provide an evidence based report on the Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs) generally available in Air Conditioning systems. These in-depth Case Studies have then compared with ECOs found from Field Trials of HARMONAC AC system inspection procedures which are based on EN15240 - the CEN Standard for AC Inspection. This comparison has enabled conclusions to be reached about how many of the ECOs that are available would be able to be identified and implemented in EU Member States as a result of the EPBD Inspection process. The project has also produced tools for use in the Inspection process, and a Teaching Package to assist in the Training of Inspectors

    Extended genetic diversity of bovine viral diarrhea virus and frequency of genotypes and subtypes in cattle in Italy between 1995 and 2013

    Genetic typing of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has distinguished BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 species and an emerging putative third species (HoBi-like virus), recently detected in southern Italy, signaling the occurrence of natural infection in Europe. Recognizing the need to update the data on BVDV genetic variability in Italy for mounting local and European alerts, a wide collection of 5 \u2032 UTR sequences (n = 371) was selected to identify the frequency of genotypes and subtypes at the herd level. BVDV-1 had the highest frequency, followed by sporadic BVDV-2. No novel HoBi-like viruses were identified. Four distribution patterns of BVDV-1 subtypes were observed: highly prevalent subtypes with a wide temporal-spatial distribution (1b and 1e), low prevalent subtypes with a widespread geographic distribution (1a, 1d, 1g, 1h, and 1k) or a restricted geographic distribution (1f), and sporadic subtypes detected only in single herds (1c, 1j, and 1l). BVDV-1c, k, and l are reported for the first time in Italy. A unique genetic variant was detected in the majority of herds, but cocirculation of genetic variants was also observed. Northern Italy ranked first for BVDV introduction, prevalence, and dispersion. Nevertheless, the presence of sporadic variants in other restricted areas suggests the risk of different routes of BVDV introduction

    On critical behaviour in systems of Hamiltonian partial differential equations

    We study the critical behaviour of solutions to weakly dispersive Hamiltonian systems considered as perturbations of elliptic and hyperbolic systems of hydrodynamic type with two components. We argue that near the critical point of gradient catastrophe of the dispersionless system, the solutions to a suitable initial value problem for the perturbed equations are approximately described by particular solutions to the Painlev\ue9-I (PI) equation or its fourth-order analogue P2I. As concrete examples, we discuss nonlinear Schr\uf6dinger equations in the semiclassical limit. A numerical study of these cases provides strong evidence in support of the conjecture
