Electron heating mechanisms in dual frequency capacitive discharges
We discuss electron heating mechanisms in the sheath regions of dual-frequency capacitive discharges, with the twin aims of identifying the dominant mechanisms and supplying closed-form expressions from which the heating power can be estimated. We show that the heating effect produced by either Ohmic or collisionless heating is much larger when the discharge is excited by a superposition of currents at two frequencies than if either current had acted alone. This coupling effect occurs because the lower frequency current, while not directly heating the electrons to any great extent, strongly affects the spatial structure of the discharge in the sheath regions
Perceptions and correlates of peer-victimization and bullying
The experiences of peer-victimization and bullying are often treated empirically as though they are conceptually indistinct. Both involve repeated aggression,but definitions of bullying additionally emphasize the importance of aggressor intent and imbalance of power between the aggressor and the victim (Olweus, 1978; Whitney & Smith, 1993). The present study aimed to examine the extent to which peer-victimization and bullying are empirically similar. The sample comprised 1,429 pupils (50.2% male) aged between 8 and 13 years attending mainstream Scottish schools. Self-report questionnaire assessing peer-victimization and bullying, copingstrategy use (WCCL: Hunter, 2000), situational appraisal and depressive symptomatology (Birleson, 1981). Almost one-third (30.7%) of pupils reported experiencing peer-victimization, and of these 38.1% (11.7% of whole sample) were categorized as victims of bullying. Victims of bullying perceived higher levels of threat and lower levels of perceived control. They also reported using more Wishful Thinking and Social Support coping strategies, but did not differ on Problem Focused coping. Bullied pupils also reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Peer-victimization and bullying appear to be qualitatively different experiences for children and adolescents, with bullying being the more serious phenomenon
Hardware and software status of QCDOC
QCDOC is a massively parallel supercomputer whose processing nodes are based
on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). This ASIC was
custom-designed so that crucial lattice QCD kernels achieve an overall
sustained performance of 50% on machines with several 10,000 nodes. This strong
scalability, together with low power consumption and a price/performance ratio
of $1 per sustained MFlops, enable QCDOC to attack the most demanding lattice
QCD problems. The first ASICs became available in June of 2003, and the testing
performed so far has shown all systems functioning according to specification.
We review the hardware and software status of QCDOC and present performance

Proton lifetime bounds from chirally symmetric lattice QCD
We present results for the matrix elements relevant for proton decay in Grand
Unified Theories (GUTs). The calculation is performed at a fixed lattice
spacing a^{-1}=1.73(3) GeV using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions on
lattices of size 16^3\times32 and 24^3\times64 with a fifth dimension of length
16. We use the indirect method which relies on an effective field theory
description of proton decay, where we need to estimate the low energy
constants, \alpha = -0.0112(25) GeV^3 and \beta = 0.0120(26) GeV^3. We relate
these low energy constants to the proton decay matrix elements using leading
order chiral perturbation theory. These can then be combined with experimental
bounds on the proton lifetime to bound parameters of individual GUTs.Comment: 17 pages, 9 Figure
Pulsar timing arrays as imaging gravitational wave telescopes: angular resolution and source (de)confusion
Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) will be sensitive to a finite number of
gravitational wave (GW) "point" sources (e.g. supermassive black hole
binaries). N quiet pulsars with accurately known distances d_{pulsar} can
characterize up to 2N/7 distant chirping sources per frequency bin \Delta
f_{gw}=1/T, and localize them with "diffraction limited" precision \delta\theta
\gtrsim (1/SNR)(\lambda_{gw}/d_{pulsar}). Even if the pulsar distances are
poorly known, a PTA with F frequency bins can still characterize up to
(2N/7)[1-(1/2F)] sources per bin, and the quasi-singular pattern of timing
residuals in the vicinity of a GW source still allows the source to be
localized quasi-topologically within roughly the smallest quadrilateral of
quiet pulsars that encircles it on the sky, down to a limiting resolution
\delta\theta \gtrsim (1/SNR) \sqrt{\lambda_{gw}/d_{pulsar}}. PTAs may be
unconfused, even at the lowest frequencies, with matched filtering always

VALIDATING CONTINGENT VALUATION WITH SURVEYS OF EXPERTS
Contingent-valuation estimates for white-water boating passengers are compared with Likert ratings by river guides. The approach involves asking whether passengers and their guides ordinally rank alternative flows the same. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Contingent Valuation Panel (1993) suggested "one might want to compare its (contingent-valuation's) outcome with that provided by a panel of experts." River guides constitute a counterfactual panel of "experts." For commercial trips, optimum flows are 34,000 cfs and 31,000 cfs for passengers and guides, and the comparable figures for private trips are 28,000 cfs and 29,000 cfs. Editorial: Improving urban regeneration and renewal outcomes by engaging an urban psychology
A crisis in mental health, especially in economically deprived neigh bour hoods, can present a significant barrier to successful urban regeneration projects. It follows that urban regeneration not only has a stake in promoting mental health care generally but, through its place making influence on physical and social structures, has a more direct responsibility to address poor mental health and sustain well-being where it exists. In support of a psychologically informed urban regeneration, this Special Issue sets out the case for a systematised intellectual and practice-based discipline and movement: An urban psychology, with an explicit therapeutic mission. It incorporates 10 articles delivered initially at Europeâs first urban psychology summit â City, Psychology, Place â held at the University of Liverpool in London campus in June 2019. In this editorial introduction, we reflect upon the need for an urban psychology at this historical juncture and offer our views on the work which such a body of practical knowledge might do to improve regeneration and renewal outcomes. We conclude that there can be no enduring economic, social or physical regeneration of distressed, failing or failed communities unless there is first âregeneration in support of life itselfâ (RISLI)

Gravitational Lensing of the X-Ray Background by Clusters of Galaxies
Gravitational lensing by clusters of galaxies affects the cosmic X-ray
background (XRB) by altering the observed density and flux distribution of
background X-ray sources. At faint detection flux thresholds, the resolved
X-ray sources appear brighter and diluted, while the unresolved component of
the XRB appears dimmer and more anisotropic, due to lensing. The diffuse X-ray
intensity in the outer halos of clusters might be lower than the sky-averaged
XRB, after the subtraction of resolved sources. Detection of the lensing signal
with a wide-field X-ray telescope could probe the mass distribution of a
cluster out to its virialization boundary. In particular, we show that the
lensing signature imprinted on the resolved component of the XRB by the cluster
A1689, should be difficult but possible to detect out to 8' at the 2-4 sigma
level, after 10^6 seconds of observation with the forthcoming AXAF satellite.
The lensing signal is fairly insensitive to the lens redshift in the range
0.1<z<0.6. The amplitude of the lensing signal is however sensitive to the
faint end slope of the number-flux relation for unresolved X-ray sources, and
can thus help constrain models of the XRB. A search for X-ray arcs or arclets
could identify the fraction of all faint sources which originate from extended
emission of distant galaxies. The probability for a 3 sigma detection of an
arclet which is stretched by a factor of about 3 after a 10^6 seconds
observation of A1689 with AXAF, is roughly comparable to the fraction of all
