    Bruno Touschek: particle physicist and father of the electron-positron collider

    This article gives a brief outline of the life and works of the Austrian physicist Bruno Touschek, who conceived, proposed and, 50 years ago, brought to completion the construction of AdA, the first electron-positron storage ring. The events which led to the approval of the AdA pro ject and the Franco-Italian collaboration which con- firmed the feasibility of electron-positron storage rings will be recalled. We shall illustrate Bruno Touschek's formation both as a theoretical physicist and as an expert in particle accelerators during the period be- tween the time he had to leave the Vienna Staat Gymnasium in 1938, because of his Jewish origin from the maternal side, until he arrived in Italy in the early 1950s and, in 1960, proposed to build AdA, in Frascati. The events which led to Touschek's collaboration with Rolf Wideroe in the construction of the first European betatron will be de- scribed. The article will make use of a number of unpublished as well as previously unknown documents, which include an early correspon- dence with Arnold Sommerfeld and Bruno Touschek's letters to his family in Vienna from Italy, Germany and Great Britain. The impact of Touschek's work on students and collaborators from University of Rome will be illustrated through his work on QED infrared radiative corrections to high energy e+e- experiments and the book Meccanica Statistica.Comment: To be published in EPJ

    Intercalary bone graft of the tibia: case series and review of the literature

    Aims: We report a series of patients treated with intercalary bone graft (IBG) of the tibia diaphysis (TD) after resection of primary bone tumors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mid- and long-term survival of TD IBG reconstruction in children and adults, characterizing patterns of success and failure. Methods: A total of 35 patients were included in this retrospective study. Median age was 22 years (range, 8\u201357). This series included 19 patients (54.3%) treated with homologous bone graft alone and 16 patients (45.7%) treated combining intercalary allograft with fibular autograft. Complications were recorded according to Henderson classification. Results: Median follow-up was 36 months (range, 1\u2013165). Local recurrence occurred in 2 patients (5.7%) after 12 and 60 months, respectively. Major complications included graft fracture (9 cases), non-union (5 cases) and infection (4 cases). Other complications were axial deformity (2 cases), superficial infection (2 cases), compartmental syndrome (1 case). Conclusion: Intercalary bone grafts of TD have been recommended as a reliable solution with long-term success rates and good functional outcome in more than 80% of patients. However, approximately half of the patients may require further surgeries to treat major complications (deep infection, delayed or non-union and graft fracture). Additional vascularized fibula graft may ameliorate final result

    Repair of hernia typically makes use of a prosthetic material; synthetic or biologic in nature. Any material which enters the body is subject to interrogation by the inflammation and immune system in addition to numerous other cell families, the outcome of which ultimately determines the success of the repair. In this review, we discuss the fundamental biology which occurs in situ when a biomaterial associates with a tissue, compare and contrast the techniques available to predict this in vitro, and review how features of hernia repair materials specifically may manipulate tissue interrogation and integration. Finally, we conclude our article by examining how biocompatibility impacts surgical practise and how a better understanding of the manner by which materials and tissues interact could benefit hernia repair.Pre-print immediately, or accepted manuscript - 12 month embarg
