High-Torque-Density Low-Cost Magnetic Gear Utilizing Hybrid Magnets and Advanced Materials

    Get PDF
Two major challenges of existing high-performance magnetic gears are: (i) High content of rare-earth permanent magnets which results in high cost as well as price fluctuation; (ii) Conflict between mechanical and electromagnetic performances, especially in the design of highspeed rotor. A magnetic gear using a blend of magnet types, i.e NdFeB, or Dy-free NdFeB and ferrites, is proposed in this paper. The goal is to bring down the cost while retaining comparable torque-transducing performance to a baseline magnetic gear only using rare-earth NdFeB magnets. A variety of topologies based on different combinations of magnet types and geometric shapes have been studied and compared. In addition, the potential impact of using an advanced dual-phase material is evaluated. The goal is to eliminate the well-known tradeoff between rotor mechanical integrity and PM flux leakage

Objective: Carbamazepine is typically used for the treatment of seizure disorders and neuropathic pain. One of the major problems with this drug is its low solubility in water; therefore the objective of this study was to enhance the solubility of carbamazepine by complexation with cyclodextrin to be formulated as effervescent and dispersible granules. Methods: Solvent evaporation method was used to prepare, binary (Carbamazepine/β-cyclodextrin) complex and ternary (Carbamazepine/β-cyclodextrin/hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC E5). The more soluble complex will be further formulated as unit dose effervescent and dispersible granules. The complexes were evaluated for their solubility, drug content, percentage practical yield and differential scanning calorimetery (DSC) to confirm the formation of the complex. Results: The ratio of effervescent components, amount of effervescent base, amount of croscarmellose sodium (superdisintegrant) within the formula were found to play a role in the percentage of drug dissolved. Among the all prepared formulas, the effervescent granules containing ternary complex equivalent to 200 or 100 carbamazepine with effervescent base of 1:2:3.4 citric acid: tartaric acid: sodium bicarbonate not less than 48% w/w and 3% w/w croscarmellose sodium within the formula may be considered as a promising formulas regarding the amount of drug dissolved within 5 min. Conclusion: The solubility of carbamazepine was enhanced by complexation with β-cyclodextrin and HPMC E5 as a ternary complex. Hence effervescent and dispersible granules of carbamazepine with good flow properties can be successfully prepared by using this complex

Investigation of some astronomical phenomena in medieval Arabic chronicles

    Get PDF
Medieval Arabic observational records of comets, meteors, meteor showers, solar and lunar eclipses are translated from the original Arabic chronicles. A comparison is made between each Arabic cometary record with East Asian observations. Specific investigation of Halley's comet has been made. The frequency of meteor showers is compared with the known prominent meteor showers. The recorded observations of different types of solar and lunar eclipses have been studied. The accuracy in the recording of the time of beginning and ending and the magnitude of the eclipse are also studied and compared with the present-day calculations. In addition, the different methods of recording of the local time of the eclipse and the magnitude are discussed

Vulnerability of Corals to Seawater Warming

    Get PDF
Coral reefs are the most diverse marine habitat, which support an estimated 1 million species globally. They are highly sensitive to climatic influences and are among the most sensitive of all ecosystems to temperature changes, exhibiting the phenomenon known as coral bleaching when stressed by higher than normal sea temperatures. Reef-building corals are highly dependent on a symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae (type of dinoflagellate known as zooxanthellae), which live within the coral tissues

A New Weighting Scheme in Weighted Markov Model for Predicting the Probability of Drought Episodes

Drought is a complex stochastic natural hazard caused by prolonged shortage of rainfall. Several environmental factors are involved in determining drought classes at the specific monitoring station. Therefore, efficient sequence processing techniques are required to explore and predict the periodic information about the various episodes of drought classes. In this study, we proposed a new weighting scheme to predict the probability of various drought classes under Weighted Markov Chain (WMC) model. We provide a standardized scheme of weights for ordinal sequences of drought classifications by normalizing squared weighted Cohen Kappa. Illustrations of the proposed scheme are given by including temporal ordinal data on drought classes determined by the standardized precipitation temperature index (SPTI). Experimental results show that the proposed weighting scheme for WMC model is sufficiently flexible to address actual changes in drought classifications by restructuring the transient behavior of a Markov chain. In summary, this paper proposes a new weighting scheme to improve the accuracy of the WMC, specifically in the field of hydrology

Evaluation of Vitamin D and Anti-Müllerian Hormone Levels in Iraqi Infertile Women

Although the mechanism underlying the relationship between vitamin D insufficiency and reproduction is unknown, research suggests that it may have a direct deleterious impact on ovarian function. This is primarily because vitamin D insufficiency can affect gonadal function. The anti müllerian hormone (AMH) is one of the most important biomarkers produced by granulosa cells and plays a key role in folliculogenesis. This study wanted to look at and compare vitamin D and AMH levels in infertile and fertile women, as well as the relationship between them in both groups. A hundred infertile and fertile women participated in the study. Anti-müllerian, prolactin, follicle-stimulating, and luteinizing hormones, as well as 25 hydroxyvitamin D, were estimated. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 72% of infertile women (n = 36), compared to 48% (n = 24) of the fertile group. There was no significant link between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and AMH in both groups. Infertile women exhibited a significantly lower serum AMH and higher body mass index. This study's findings suggested that the correlation between vitamin D and ovarian reserve markers was unlikely to present. However, the infertile group has a more significant vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency rate

    Get PDF
Although pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding has been widely used in microelectronics and photonics packaging industry, a full understanding of various phenomena involved is still a matter of trials and speculations. In this research, an ultra compact pulsed Nd:YAG laser with wavelength of 1.064 µm has been used to produce a spot weld on stainless steel 304. The principal objective of this research is to examine the effects of laser welding parameters such as laser beam peak powers, pulse durations, incident angles, focus point positions and number of shots on the weld dimensions: penetration depth and bead width. The ratio of the penetration depth to the bead width is considered as one of the most critical parameters to determine the weld quality. It is found that the penetration depth and bead width increase when the laser beam peak power, pulse duration and number of shot increase. In contrast, the penetration depth decreases when the laser beam defocus position and incident angle increase. This is due to the reduction of the laser beam intensity causing by the widening of the laser spot size. These experimental results provide a reference on an optimal laser welding operations for a reliable photonics device packaging. The results obtained shows that stainless steel 304 is suitable to be used as a base material for photonics device packaging employing Nd:YAG laser welding technique
