Spectral and Fermi surface properties from Wannier interpolation
We present an efficient first-principles approach for calculating Fermi
surface averages and spectral properties of solids, and use it to compute the
low-field Hall coefficient of several cubic metals and the magnetic circular
dichroism of iron. The first step is to perform a conventional first-principles
calculation and store the low-lying Bloch functions evaluated on a uniform grid
of k-points in the Brillouin zone. We then map those states onto a set of
maximally-localized Wannier functions, and evaluate the matrix elements of the
Hamiltonian and the other needed operators between the Wannier orbitals, thus
setting up an ``exact tight-binding model.'' In this compact representation the
k-space quantities are evaluated inexpensively using a generalized
Slater-Koster interpolation. Because of the strong localization of the Wannier
orbitals in real space, the smoothness and accuracy of the k-space
interpolation increases rapidly with the number of grid points originally used
to construct the Wannier functions. This allows k-space integrals to be
performed with ab-initio accuracy at low cost. In the Wannier representation,
band gradients, effective masses, and other k-derivatives needed for transport
and optical coefficients can be evaluated analytically, producing numerically
stable results even at band crossings and near weak avoided crossings.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Normalization procedure for relaxation studies in NMR quantum information processing
NMR quantum information processing studies rely on the reconstruction of the
density matrix representing the so-called pseudo-pure states (PPS). An
initially pure part of a PPS state undergoes unitary and non-unitary
(relaxation) transformations during a computation process, causing a "loss of
purity" until the equilibrium is reached. Besides, upon relaxation, the nuclear
polarization varies in time, a fact which must be taken into account when
comparing density matrices at different instants. Attempting to use time-fixed
normalization procedures when relaxation is present, leads to various anomalies
on matrices populations. On this paper we propose a method which takes into
account the time-dependence of the normalization factor. From a generic form
for the deviation density matrix an expression for the relaxing initial pure
state is deduced. The method is exemplified with an experiment of relaxation of
the concurrence of a pseudo-entangled state, which exhibits the phenomenon of
sudden death, and the relaxation of the Wigner function of a pseudo-cat state.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to appear in QI
Edge phonons in black phosphorus
Exfoliated black phosphorus has recently emerged as a new two-dimensional
crystal that, due to its peculiar and anisotropic crystalline and electronic
band structures, may have potentially important applications in electronics,
optoelectronics and photonics. Despite the fact that the edges of layered
crystals host a range of singular properties whose characterization and
exploitation are of utmost importance for device development, the edges of
black phosphorus remain poorly characterized. In this work, the atomic
structure and the behavior of phonons near different black phosphorus edges are
experimentally and theoretically studied using Raman spectroscopy and density
functional theory calculations. Polarized Raman results show the appearance of
new modes at the edges of the sample, and their spectra depend on the atomic
structure of the edges (zigzag or armchair). Theoretical simulations confirm
that the new modes are due to edge phonon states that are forbidden in the
bulk, and originated from the lattice termination rearrangements.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
