    Examination Free-Flow Speed Distribution on Two-Lane Rural Roads

    [EN] Free-flow speed variation of passenger vehicles along a road segment is one of the most used factors in road safety studies, as a surrogate measure to evaluate road design consistency. Free-flow speed may be measured when a road segment is already built but must be estimated during the design phase. Several studies have been carried out to calibrate models to estimate free-flow speed, with geometric features as explanatory variables. Currently, most free-flow speed models focus only on mean speed or speed in particular percentiles, such as the 85th or 95th. Moreover, most studies have assumed normality in the free-flow speed distribution without checking this hypothesis. The main objective of this study was to analyze the free-flow speed distribution on two-lane rural road curves and tangents. The research focused on two main issues: determining whether speed data were normally distributed at a specific site and analyzing the behavior of the mean and standard deviation of speed on curves and tangents. The study was based on continuous operating speed profiles, which were obtained from a database of more than 16,000 vehicles/km. A total of 63 horizontal curves and 78 tangents were analyzed. According to the results, the normal distribution is not the best distribution in most cases for describing free-flow speeds. In 46 of the curves and 64 of the tangents, free-flow speed cannot be assumed to be normally distributed.     The well-being of carers of older Aboriginal people living in the Kimberley region of remote Western Australia: Empowerment, depression, and carer burden

    Objective: To describe demographic features and well-being of carers of Aboriginal Australians aged ≥45 years in remote Western Australia. Method: Carer burden, empowerment, and depression were assessed in 124 Aboriginal carers in four remote Aboriginal communities. Results: Carers were aged 38.8 ± 15.0 years, 73.4% were female, and 75.8% were children or grandchildren of the person cared for. The mean Zarit-6 score was 3.7 ± 3.6. Attending high school (odds ratio [OR] = 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.1, 0.7]) and feeling empowered (OR = 0.2; 95% CI = [0.1, 0.8]) were inversely associated with carer burden; female carers were less likely to feel empowered (OR = 0.4; 95% CI = [0.2, 0.9]); and empowerment was inversely associated with depression (OR = 0.3; 95% CI = [0.1, 0.7]). Discussion: Aboriginal carers in remote communities are relatively young and most are children or grandchildren. Carer burden was lower than anticipated. However, existing tools may not adequately measure Aboriginal perspectives. Education and empowerment are key factors which support programs must consider

    Evolution of local recruitment and its consequences for marine populations

    Advantages of dispersal on the scales that are possible in a long pelagic larval period are not apparent, even for benthic species. An alternative hypothesis is that wide dispersal may be an incidental byproduct of an ontogenetic migration from and then back to the parental habitat. Under this hypothesis, the water column is a better habitat than the bottom for early development. Because the parental area is often an especially favorable habitat for juveniles and adults, selection may even favor larval retention or larval return rather than dispersal. Where larval capabilities and currents permit, a high percentage of recruits may then be produced from local adults. Expected consequences of a high proportion of local recruitment are stronger links between stock and recruitment, greater vulnerability to recruitment overfishing and local modifications of habitat, greater local benefits from fishery reserves, and possibly more localized adaptation within populations. Export of some larvae is consistent with a high proportion of retained or returning larvae, could stabilize populations linked by larval exchange, and provide connectivity between marine reserves. Even a small amount of larval export could account for the greater gene flow, large ranges, and long evolutionary durations seen in species with long pelagic larval stages
