Proximity and anomalous field-effect characteristics in double-wall carbon nanotubes
Proximity effect on field-effect characteristic (FEC) in double-wall carbon
nanotubes (DWCNTs) is investigated. In a semiconductor-metal (S-M) DWCNT, the
penetration of electron wavefunctions in the metallic shell to the
semiconducting shell turns the original semiconducting tube into a metal with a
non-zero local density of states at the Fermi level. By using a two-band
tight-binding model on a ladder of two legs, it is demonstrated that anomalous
FEC observed in so-called S-M type DWCNTs can be fully understood by the
proximity effect of metallic phases.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Dynamics of urban sprawl
This paper introduces a framework for understanding the dynamics of urban growth, particularly the continuing problem of urban sprawl. The models we present are based on transitions from vacant land to established development. We propose that the essential mechanism of transition is analogous to the way an epidemic is generated within a susceptible population, with waves of development being generated from the conversion of available land to new development and redevelopment through the aging process. We first outline the standard aggregate model in differential equation form, showing how different variants (including logistic, exponential, predator-prey models) can be derived for various urban growth situations. We then generalize the model to a spatial system and show how sprawl can be conceived as a process of both interaction/reaction and diffusion. We operationalize the model as a cellular automata (CA) which implies that diffusion is entirely local, and we then illustrate how waves of development and redevelopment characterizing both sprawl and aging of the existing urban stock, can be simulated. Finally we show how the model can be adapted to a real urban situation - the AnnArbor area in Eastern Michigan - where we demonstrate how waves of development are absorbed and modified by particular historical contingencies associated with the re-existing urban structure
Intestinal histomorphology, autochthonous microbiota and growth performance of the oscar (Astronotus ocellatus Agassiz, 1831) following dietary administration of xylooligosaccharide
The present study investigates the changes in intestinal histomorphology, autochthonous microbiota and growth performance of the oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, following dietary administration of different levels of xylooligosaccharide (XOS). One hundred forty-four oscars (8.88 ± 0.23 g; n = 144) were randomly stocked in 12 aquaria (100-L) assigned to four treatments repeated in triplicate. Fish were fed a commercial diet, Biomar, supplemented with different levels (0 control, 0.5, 1, 2%) of XOS for 8 weeks. Treatments were investigated under static aerated water conditions with a 70% daily water exchange. Evaluation of intestinal histomorphology (villus height, enterocytes height and thickness of the tunica muscularis) revealed no significant differences between XOS-fed groups and the control treatment (P > 0.05). However, administration of XOS in the oscar diet increased the total autochthonous intestinal heterotrophic bacteria significantly (P < 0.05). Autochthonous lactic acid bacteria levels were also significantly elevated in XOS-fed groups (P < 0.05). Furthermore, dietary XOS remarkably increased growth performance (control: 22.76 ± 2.79, 2% XOS: 29.13 ± 2. 8; n = 12) parameters of the oscar (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated the beneficial effects of XOS on the growth performance and intestinal microbiota of A. ocellatus. © 2016 Blackwell Verlag GmbH
Data quality: Some comments on the NASA software defect datasets
Background-Self-evidently empirical analyses rely upon the quality of their data. Likewise, replications rely upon accurate reporting and using the same rather than similar versions of datasets. In recent years, there has been much interest in using machine learners to classify software modules into defect-prone and not defect-prone categories. The publicly available NASA datasets have been extensively used as part of this research. Objective-This short note investigates the extent to which published analyses based on the NASA defect datasets are meaningful and comparable. Method-We analyze the five studies published in the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering since 2007 that have utilized these datasets and compare the two versions of the datasets currently in use. Results-We find important differences between the two versions of the datasets, implausible values in one dataset and generally insufficient detail documented on dataset preprocessing. Conclusions-It is recommended that researchers 1) indicate the provenance of the datasets they use, 2) report any preprocessing in sufficient detail to enable meaningful replication, and 3) invest effort in understanding the data prior to applying machine learners

MHD-RLC discharge model and the efficiency characteristics of plasma synthetic jet actuator
Major factors affecting efficiency of plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) are analyzed based on a new discharge model in the present paper. The model couples the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with the resistor–inductor–capacitor (RLC) equations, and is able to resolve the time-dependent voltage fall on the sheath region and arc region, which is critical in analyzing energy loss in the heating process. This model is integrated into the commercial CFD software by a two-equation method. Results show that in a typical capacitive discharge at microsecond scale, the maximum energy loss is the sheath energy loss, which accounts for nearly half of the discharge energy, while the radiation loss is less than 5%. The discharge time is an important parameter for the PSJA efficiency. A short discharge time less than 1 μs will effectively reduce the sheath energy loss, while a longer discharge time will decrease the thermodynamic efficiency
The origins of electromechanical indentation size effect in ferroelectrics
Metals exhibit a size-dependent hardening when subject to indentation.
Mechanisms for this phenomenon have been intensely researched in recent times.
Does such a size-effect also exist in the electromechanical behavior of
ferroelectrics?--if yes, what are the operative mechanisms? Our experiments on
BaTiO3 indeed suggest an electromechanical size-effect. We argue, through
theoretical calculations and differential experiments on another
non-ferroelectric piezoelectric (Quartz), that the phenomenon of
flexoelectricity(as opposed to dislocation activity) is responsible for our
observations. Flexoelectricity is the coupling of strain gradients to
polarization and exists in both ordinary and piezoelectric dielectrics. In
particular, ferroelectrics exhibit an unusually large flexoelectric response.Comment: in revie

Modeling and optimization of the multichannel spark discharge
This paper reports a novel analytic model of this multichannel spark discharge, considering the delay time in the breakdown process, the electric transforming of the discharge channel from a capacitor to a resistor induced by the air breakdown, and the varying plasma resistance in the discharge process. The good agreement between the experimental and the simulated results validated the accuracy of this model. Based on this model, the influence of the circuit parameters on the maximum discharge channel number (MDCN) is investigated. Both the input voltage amplitude and the breakdown voltage threshold of each discharge channel play a critical role. With the increase of the input voltage and the decrease of the breakdown voltage, the MCDN increases almost linearly. With the increase of the discharge capacitance, the MDCN first rises and then remains almost constant. With the increase of the circuit inductance, the MDCN increases slowly but decreases quickly when the inductance increases over a certain value. There is an optimal value of the capacitor connected to the discharge channel corresponding to the MDCN. Finally, based on these results, to shorten the discharge time, a modified multichannel discharge circuit is developed and validated by the experiment. With only 6-kV input voltage, 31-channels discharge is achieved. The breakdown voltage of each electrode gap is larger than 3 kV. The modified discharge circuit is certain to be widely used in the PSJA flow control field
Quantum information storage and state transfer based on spin systems
The idea of quantum state storage is generalized to describe the coherent
transfer of quantum information through a coherent data bus. In this universal
framework, we comprehensively review our recent systematical investigations to
explore the possibility of implementing the physical processes of quantum
information storage and state transfer by using quantum spin systems, which may
be an isotropic antiferromagnetic spin ladder system or a ferromagnetic
Heisenberg spin chain. Our studies emphasize the physical mechanisms and the
fundamental problems behind the various protocols for the storage and transfer
of quantum information in solid state systems.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Review article on the quantum spin based quantum

Adiabatic Creation of Atomic Squeezing in Dark States vs. Decoherences
We study the multipartite correlations of the multi-atom dark states, which
are characterized by the atomic squeezing beyond the pairwise entanglement. It
is shown that, in the photon storage process with atomic ensemble via
electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism, the atomic squeezing
and the pairwise entanglement can be created by adiabatically manipulating the
Rabi frequency of the classical light field on the atomic ensemble. We also
consider the sudden death for the atomic squeezing and the pairwise
entanglement under various decoherence channels. An optimal time for generating
the greatest atomic squeezing and pairwise entanglement is obtained by studying
in details the competition between the adiabatic creation of quantum
correlation in the atomic ensemble and the decoherence that we describe with
three typical decoherence channels.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure
