Direct and indirect effect of depression in adolescence on adult wages
It is well recognized that a depressive mental state can persist for a long time, and this can adversely impact labour market outcomes. The aim of this article is to examine the direct association between depression status in late-teenage years and adult wages, as well as the indirect association, operating through accumulated education, experience and occupation choice. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 data, we find adolescent depression is associated with a wage penalty of around 10–15%, but its mechanics are very different for males and females. For males, about three quarters of the wage penalty is through the direct channel, whilst for females the indirect effect channel is dominant. The indirect channel is driven by lower accumulated education, mostly because depression discourages further study post high school. These results are important because they imply that the association between adolescent depression and wages is stronger than has been estimated in previous cross-sectional studies
A Method of Optimal Radio Frequency Assignment for Deep Space Missions
A method for determining optimal radio frequency channels for the Deep Space Network is described. Computer automated routines calculate interference-to-signal ratios over a given mission period and provide a quantitative assessment of the channels which could then be assigned to a new mission. This automated procedure reduces the analysis time considerably and effectively improves upon the accuracy of existing channel assignment techniques
The contribution of Western fast food to fast-growing body mass in China

The westernization of Asian countries has led to the rapid expansion of Western-style fast-food restaurants, which are believed to be fueling an unprecedented rise in body mass in these countries. This study tests this belief using longitudinal data from China. Exploiting the opening of a Western-style fast-food restaurant in a particular community, we conduct a transition analysis to make a more convincing causal interpretation than the standard cross-sectional or fixed-effects approach. Considering several measures of fatness, we find no robust evidence of Western fast food having a substantial effect overall, but there is some indication of effect heterogeneity
Long-range Ni/Mn structural order in epitaxial double perovskite La2NiMnO6 thin films
We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of
ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An
x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces
additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a
pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form
with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman
spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by
additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The
appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the
clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range
Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a
single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also
a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature
(FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u.
saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their
magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic
configurations of their Ni/Mn cations.Comment: 15 pages, 5 fig
Phase formation, phonon behavior, and magnetic properties of novel ferromagnetic La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Ni) triple perovskites
In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized
and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this
paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn
ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the
magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the
magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while
La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and
contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the
insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the
strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.Comment: 13 pages, 3 fig
Electrons on a sphere in disorder potential
We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the behavior of the
electron gas on a sphere in the presence of point-like impurities. We find a
criterion when the disorder can be regarded as small one and the main effect is
the broadening of rotational multiplets. In the latter regime the statistics of
one impurity-induced band is studied numerically. The energy level spacing
distribution function follows the law P(s) ~ s exp(-a s^b) with 1<b<2. The
number variance shows various possibilities, strongly dependent on the chosen

Design and Development of Personal GeoServices for Universities
Personal GeoServices are emerging as an interaction paradigm linking users to information rich environments like a university campus or to Big Data sources like the Internet of Things by delivering spatially intelligent web-services. OpenStreetMap (OSM) constitutes a valuable source of spatial base-data that can be extracted, integrated, and utilised with such heterogeneous data sources for free. In this paper, we present a Personal GeoServices application built on OSM spatial data and university-specific business data for staff, faculty, and students. While generic products such as Google Maps and Google Earth enable basic forms of spatial exploration, the domain of a university campus presents specific business information needs, such as “What classes are scheduled in that room over there?” and “How can I get to Prof. Murray’s office from here?” Within the framework of the StratAG project (www.StratAG.ie), an eCampus Demonstrator was developed for the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM) to assist university users in exploring and analysing their surroundings within a detailed data environment. This work describes this system in detail, discussing the usage of OSM vector data, and providing insights for developers of spatial information systems for personalised visual exploration of an area
VLSI architectures for computing multiplications and inverses in GF(2-m)
Finite field arithmetic logic is central in the implementation of Reed-Solomon coders and in some cryptographic algorithms. There is a need for good multiplication and inversion algorithms that are easily realized on VLSI chips. Massey and Omura recently developed a new multiplication algorithm for Galois fields based on a normal basis representation. A pipeline structure is developed to realize the Massey-Omura multiplier in the finite field GF(2m). With the simple squaring property of the normal-basis representation used together with this multiplier, a pipeline architecture is also developed for computing inverse elements in GF(2m). The designs developed for the Massey-Omura multiplier and the computation of inverse elements are regular, simple, expandable and, therefore, naturally suitable for VLSI implementation
