Analysis of broadband microwave conductivity and permittivity measurements of semiconducting materials

We perform broadband phase sensitive measurements of the reflection coefficient from 45 MHz up to 20 GHz employing a vector network analyzer with a 2.4 mm coaxial sensor which is terminated by the sample under test. While the material parameters (conductivity and permittivity) can be easily extracted from the obtained impedance data if the sample is metallic, no direct solution is possible if the material under investigation is an insulator. Focusing on doped semiconductors with largely varying conductivity, here we present a closed calibration and evaluation procedure for frequencies up to 5 GHz, based on the rigorous solution for the electromagnetic field distribution inside the sample combined with the variational principle; basically no limiting assumptions are necessary. A simple static model based on the electric current distribution proves to yield the same frequency dependence of the complex conductivity up to 1 GHz. After a critical discussion we apply the developed method to the hopping transport in Si:P at temperature down to 1 K.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Physic

Discovery of spatial periodicities in a coronal loop using automated edge-tracking algorithms

    Get PDF
A new method for automated coronal loop tracking, in both spatial and temporal domains, is presented. Applying this technique to TRACE data, obtained using the 171 Å filter on 1998 July 14, we detect a coronal loop undergoing a 270 s kink-mode oscillation, as previously found by Aschwanden et al. However, we also detect flare-induced, and previously unnoticed, spatial periodicities on a scale of 3500 km, which occur along the coronal loop edge. Furthermore, we establish a reduction in oscillatory power for these spatial periodicities of 45% over a 222 s interval. We relate the reduction in detected oscillatory power to the physical damping of these loop-top oscillations

Incidence of Arrhythmias and Myocardial Ischaemia During Haemodialysis and Haemofiltration

Thirty-two patients (10 male, 22 female; age 37-82 years) undergoing maintenance haemodialysis or haemofiltration were studied by means of Holter device capable of simultaneously analysing rhythm and ST changes in three leads. Twenty-five patients were on haemodialysis, seven on haemofiltration, mean duration of haemodialysis/haemofiltration being 3.4±3 years. Incidence of ventricular tachycardia was low, being detected only in 1 of 32 patients. Ventricular premature beats in excess of 10/h during a period of 2 h were found in 8 of 32 patients and 100 supraventricular premature beats for 2 h or more in 4 of 32 patients. Both ventricular premature beats and supraventricular premature beats were most frequently recorded during the last hour of haemodialysis/haemofiltration. ECG signs of ischaemia were detected in eight patients, four of whom were asymptomatic. Ischaemia also occurred predominantly during the last hour of haemodialysis/haemofiltration. Two symptomatic patients displayed neither arrhythmias nor ST-changes while being monitored. The study shows that silent ischaemia and arrhythmias in patients under going chronic haemodialysis/haemofiltration may not be infrequent. Recognition of these events could be of importance in the management of these patient

Multi-lepton Signatures of a Hidden Sector in Rare B Decays

We explore the sensitivity of flavour changing b -> s transitions to a (sub-)GeV hidden sector with generic couplings to the Standard Model through the Higgs, vector and axion portals. The underlying two-body decays of B mesons, B -> X_s S and B0 -> SS, where S denotes a generic new GeV-scale particle, may significantly enhance the yield of monochromatic lepton pairs in the final state via prompt decays of S to a dilepton pair. Existing measurements of the charged lepton spectrum in neutral-current semileptonic B decays provide bounds on the parameters of the light sector that are significantly more stringent than the requirements of naturalness. New search modes, such as B -> X_s + n(l+l-) and B0 -> n(l+l-) with n > 1 can provide additional sensitivity to scenarios in which both the Higgs and vector portals are active, and are accessible to (super-)B factories and hadron colliders.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures; v2: reference added, minor correction

A Note on Domain Walls and the Parameter Space of N=1 Gauge Theories

We study the spectrum of BPS domain walls within the parameter space of N=1 U(N) gauge theories with adjoint matter and a cubic superpotential. Using a low energy description obtained by compactifying the theory on R^3 x S^1, we examine the wall spectrum by combining direct calculations at special points in the parameter space with insight drawn from the leading order potential between minimal walls, i.e those interpolating between adjacent vacua. We show that the multiplicity of composite BPS walls -- as characterised by the CFIV index -- exhibits discontinuities on marginal stability curves within the parameter space of the maximally confining branch. The structure of these marginal stability curves for large N appears tied to certain singularities within the matrix model description of the confining vacua.Comment: 33 pages, LaTeX, 6 eps figures; v2: references adde

Elastic electron deuteron scattering with consistent meson exchange and relativistic contributions of leading order

    Get PDF
The influence of relativistic contributions to elastic electron deuteron scattering is studied systematically at low and intermediate momentum transfers (Q230Q^2\leq 30 fm2^{-2}). In a (p/M)(p/M)-expansion, all leading order relativistic π\pi-exchange contributions consistent with the Bonn OBEPQ models are included. In addition, static heavy meson exchange currents including boost terms and lowest order ρπγ\rho\pi\gamma-currents are considered. Sizeable effects from the various relativistic two-body contributions, mainly from π\pi-exchange, have been found in form factors, structure functions and the tensor polarization T20T_{20}. Furthermore, static properties, viz. magnetic dipole and charge quadrupole moments and the mean square charge radius are evaluated.Comment: 15 pages Latex including 5 figures, final version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.C Details of changes: (i) The notation of the curves in Figs. 1 and 2 have been clarified with respect to left and right panels. (ii) In Figs. 3 and 4 an experimental point for T_20 has been added and a corresponding reference [48] (iii) At the end of the text we have added a paragraph concerning the quality of the Bonn OBEPQ potential

Gender-specific association of adiponectin as a predictor of progression of chronic kidney disease: The Mild to Moderate Kidney Disease Study

    Get PDF
Progressive renal vascular sclerosis is a key feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Adiponectin, an adipokine with potent anti-inflammatory and antiatherosclerotic properties, is associated with insulin resistance, type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we evaluated the predictive value of adiponectin for the progression of CKD in patients enrolled in the Mild to Moderate Kidney Disease Study. The primary end point was defined as a doubling of the baseline serum creatinine and/or terminal renal failure in 177 patients who completed a prospective follow-up of 7 years. Patients who reached a progression endpoint (n=65) were significantly older, had higher baseline serum creatinine, proteinuria and adiponectin concentrations and more components of the metabolic syndrome. A gender-stratified Cox model revealed adiponectin in men as a significant predictor of progression after adjustment for age, glomerular filtration rate, and proteinuria. Male patients with adiponectin levels above their ROC analysis-derived optimal cutoff of 4μg/ml had a significantly faster progression than patients below this point. This prospective long-term study in patients with CKD indicates high adiponectin as a novel independent predictor of disease progression in men but not in women. Our observation may be relevant for other conditions of progressive vascular sclerosis and diabetic nephropathy

BPS States, Refined Indices, and Quiver Invariants

For D=4 BPS state construction, counting, and wall-crossing thereof, quiver quantum mechanics offers two alternative approaches, the Coulomb phase and the Higgs phase, which sometimes produce inequivalent counting. The authors have proposed, in arXiv:1205.6511, two conjectures on the precise relationship between the two, with some supporting evidences. Higgs phase ground states are naturally divided into the Intrinsic Higgs sector, which is insensitive to wall-crossings and thus an invariant of quiver, plus a pulled-back ambient cohomology, conjectured to be an one-to-one image of Coulomb phase ground states. In this note, we show that these conjectures hold for all cyclic quivers with Abelian nodes, and further explore angular momentum and R-charge content of individual states. Along the way, we clarify how the protected spin character of BPS states should be computed in the Higgs phase, and further determine the entire Hodge structure of the Higgs phase cohomology. This shows that, while the Coulomb phase states are classified by angular momentum, the Intrinsic Higgs states are classified by R-symmetry.Comment: 51 pages, 5 figure
