    Clinical, Radiological, and Molecular Findings of Acute Encephalitis in a COVID-19 Patient: A Rare Case Report.

    We report a case of encephalitis in a young male patient with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who initially presented with typical symptoms of fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath but later on developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and required mechanical ventilation. Two days post-extubation, the patient developed new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures and confusion. MRI of the brain was done and it showed an abnormal signal in the bilateral medial cortical frontal region. His cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed a characteristic picture of a viral infection with a high white blood cell count and normal glucose and protein levels. After ruling out all common causes of viral encephalitis such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and based on the review of available literature regarding the neurological manifestations of COVID-19, this case was labeled as acute viral encephalitis secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection

    Comparative Analysis of Eight Numerical Methods Using Weibull Distribution to Estimate Wind Power Density for Coastal Areas in Pakistan

    Currently, Pakistan is facing severe energy crises and global warming effects. Hence, there is an urgent need to utilize renewable energy generation. In this context, Pakistan possesses massive wind energy potential across the coastal areas. This paper investigates and numerically analyzes coastal areas' wind power density potential. Eight different state-of-the-art numerical methods, namely an (a) empirical method, (b) graphical method, (c) wasp algorithm, (d) energy pattern method, (e) moment method, (f) maximum likelihood method, (g) energy trend method, and (h) least-squares regression method, were analyzed to calculate Weibull parameters. We computed Weibull shape parameters (WSP) and Weibull scale parameters (WCP) for four regions: Jiwani, Gwadar, Pasni, and Ormara in Pakistan. These Weibull parameters from the above-mentioned numerical methods were analyzed and compared to find an optimal numerical method for the coastal areas of Pakistan. Further, the following statistical indicators were used to compare the efficiency of the above numerical methods: (i) analysis of variance (R-2), (ii) chi-square (X-2), and (iii) root mean square error (RMSE). The performance validation showed that the energy trend and graphical method provided weak performance for the observed period for four coastal regions of Pakistan. Further, we observed that Ormara is the best and Jiwani is the worst area for wind power generation using comparative analyses for actual and estimated data of wind power density from four regions of Pakistan

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing lung injury has been well documented in the literature recently. They do so primarily by binding to the membrane-bound form of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptors. However, since these receptors are also expressed in the heart and blood vessels, coronavirus can also cause damage to these organs by binding to the ACE-2 receptors. A typical case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) usually presents with respiratory symptoms like cough and shortness of breath accompanied by fever. The literature regarding this pandemic has been growing and now we know very well that the effect of this deadly virus is not restricted to the lungs alone. It can, unfortunately, cause various other complications ranging from neurological damage to even myocardial injury in rare cases. We present an interesting case of a 40-year-old male patient who presented to us with shortness of breath. When further investigated, the patient was found to have a new onset of heart failure secondary to COVID-19 induced myocarditis

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), apart from commonly involving the respiratory system, has its impact on the central nervous system, with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from headaches to ischemic strokes. The ongoing research regarding this novel disease has found that there is a very high prevalence of thrombotic episodes especially in critically ill patients when compared to severe presentation of other viral illnesses. This COVID-19-associated coagulopathy has a very complex etiology with the ability to form thrombus in arteries, veins, and microvasculatures of different organs. We present a unique case of a young woman with underlying COVID-19 who unfortunately developed locked-in syndrome due to bilateral pontine infarction during the course of her illness

    Arc discharge synthesis of CNTs in hydrogen environment in presence of magnetic field

    In this study the effect of hydrogen ambient environment on the growth of carbon nanotubes by arc discharge plasma in presence of external magnetic field is investigated. The samples collected from cathode deposit are analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Results show an increase in carbon nanotube growth with increase in hydrogen ambient pressure. The magnetic field considerably enhances the growth of carbon nanotube as observed in FESEM micrographs. In Raman spectrum, high intensity of G peak as compared to D peak indicates the presence of high quality nanotubes. Magnetic effect remarkably decreases ID/IG ratio from 1.55 to 0.31 for ambient pressure 10 mbar

    Serological evidence of hepatitis E virus infection in pigs and jaundice among pig handlers in Bangladesh

    Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most common cause of viral hepatitis in humans. Pigs may act as a reservoir of HEV, and pig handlers were frequently identified with a higher prevalence of antibodies to HEV. The objectives of this study were to identify evidence of HEV infection in pigs and compare the history of jaundice between pig handlers and people not exposed to pigs and pork. Blood and faecal samples were collected from 100 pigs derived from three slaughterhouses in the Gazipur district of Bangladesh from January to June, 2011. We also interviewed 200 pig handlers and 250 non-exposed people who did not eat pork or handled pigs in the past 2 years. We tested the pig sera for HEV-specific antibodies using a competitive ELISA and pig faecal samples for HEV RNA using real-time RT-PCR. Of 100 pig sera, 82% (n = 82) had detectable antibody against HEV. Of the 200 pig handlers, 28% (56/200) demonstrated jaundice within the past 2 years, whereas only 17% (43/250) of controls had a history of jaundice (p < .05). Compared to non-exposed people, those who slaughtered pigs (31% versus 15%, p < .001), reared pigs (37% versus 20%, p < .001), butchered pigs (35% versus 19%, p < .001) or involved in pork transportation (28% versus 13%, p < .001) were more likely to be affected with jaundice in the preceding 2 years. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, exposure to pigs (odds ratio [OR]: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2–3.9) and age (OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95–0.99) was significantly associated with jaundice in the past 2 years. Pigs in Bangladesh demonstrated evidence of HEV infection, and a history of jaundice was significantly more frequent in pig handlers. Identifying and genotyping HEV in pigs and pig handlers may provide further evidence of the pig's role in zoonotic HEV transmission in Bangladesh

    Ophthalmic Biomarker Detection Using Ensembled Vision Transformers -- Winning Solution to IEEE SPS VIP Cup 2023

    This report outlines our approach in the IEEE SPS VIP Cup 2023: Ophthalmic Biomarker Detection competition. Our primary objective in this competition was to identify biomarkers from Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images obtained from a diverse range of patients. Using robust augmentations and 5-fold cross-validation, we trained two vision transformer-based models: MaxViT and EVA-02, and ensembled them at inference time. We find MaxViT's use of convolution layers followed by strided attention to be better suited for the detection of local features while EVA-02's use of normal attention mechanism and knowledge distillation is better for detecting global features. Ours was the best-performing solution in the competition, achieving a patient-wise F1 score of 0.814 in the first phase and 0.8527 in the second and final phase of VIP Cup 2023, scoring 3.8% higher than the next-best solution

    Viscosity and thermal conductivity on magneto-hydrodynamic chemically reacting nanofluid over a vertical cone embedded in porous medium

    The purpose of current investigations is to explore the impacts of variable fluid properties on the vertical cone embedded in a porous medium for reduced skin friction rates and enhanced mass transfer rates. The flow governing systems of highly nonlinear partial differential equations is obtained by using the Rivilin Erickson tensor along with the theory of boundary layer approximation. Buongiorno model is analyzed using the impacts of variable properties of the fluid based on the nanofluids characteristics. The present model has been numerically tackled using the boundary value problem technique in MATLAB and the criterion for convergence or tolerance is taken as 10−6. The outcome of present study shows the variable thermal conductivity, which is improved by using the heat transfer coefficient and reduces the skin friction based on the nanofluid. The Sherwood number is also increased under the Thermophoresis diffusion and the Brownian motion. Momentum boundary layer has expanded under the adjustable thermal conductivity along with the viscidity parameter. It is stated that these investigations have not been found by using the boundary value algorithm to solve the utilizing Buongiorno nanofluid model over the vertical cone based on the permeable medium. © 2023 The Author(s
