    Density of Yang-Lee zeros for the Ising ferromagnet

    The densities of Yang-Lee zeros for the Ising ferromagnet on the L×LL\times L square lattice are evaluated from the exact grand partition functions (L=3∼16L=3\sim16). The properties of the density of Yang-Lee zeros are discussed as a function of temperature TT and system size LL. The three different classes of phase transitions for the Ising ferromagnet, first-order phase transition, second-order phase transition, and Yang-Lee edge singularity, are clearly distinguished by estimating the magnetic scaling exponent yhy_h from the densities of zeros for finite-size systems. The divergence of the density of zeros at Yang-Lee edge in high temperatures (Yang-Lee edge singularity), which has been detected only by the series expansion until now for the square-lattice Ising ferromagnet, is obtained from the finite-size data. The identification of the orders of phase transitions in small systems is also discussed using the density of Yang-Lee zeros.Comment: to appear in Physical Review

    Drinking patterns among Korean adults: results of the 2009 Korean community health survey.

    ObjectivesIn Korea, the proportion of deaths due to alcohol is estimated at 8.9%, far exceeding the global estimate of 3.8%. Therefore, this study was performed to examine the factors associated with low-risk, moderate-risk, and high-risk drinking patterns in Korean adults and to identify target populations for prevention and control of alcohol-related diseases and deaths.MethodsWe analyzed data from 230 715 Korean adults aged 19 years and older who participated in the 2009 Korean Community Health Survey. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to examine associations between socio-demographic and health-related factors and patterns of alcohol use.ResultsA substantially larger proportion of men than women engaged in high risk (21.2% vs. 3.4%) and moderate-risk alcohol use (15.5% vs. 8.2%). In both sexes, moderate- and high-risk uses were associated with younger age, higher income, being currently employed, smoking, being overweight/obese, and good self-rated health.ConclusionsGiven the large proportion of the population that is engaging in moderate- and high-risk drinking and given the social norms that support this behavior, public health policies and campaigns to reduce alcohol consumption targeting the entire population are indicated

    Weightless: Lossy Weight Encoding For Deep Neural Network Compression

    The large memory requirements of deep neural networks limit their deployment and adoption on many devices. Model compression methods effectively reduce the memory requirements of these models, usually through applying transformations such as weight pruning or quantization. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for lossy weight encoding which complements conventional compression techniques. The encoding is based on the Bloomier filter, a probabilistic data structure that can save space at the cost of introducing random errors. Leveraging the ability of neural networks to tolerate these imperfections and by re-training around the errors, the proposed technique, Weightless, can compress DNN weights by up to 496x with the same model accuracy.     Perturbative SO(10) Grand Unification

    We consider a phenomenologically viable SO(10) grand unification model of the unification scale MGM_G around 101610^{16} GeV which reproduces the MSSM at low energy and allows perturbative calculations up to the Planck scale MPM_P or the string scale MstM_{st}. Both requirements strongly restrict a choice of Higgs representations in a model. We propose a simple SO(10) model with a set of Higgs representations {2×10+16ˉ+16+45}\{2 \times {\bf 10} + {\bf \bar{16}} + {\bf 16} + {\bf 45} \} and show its phenomenological viability. This model can indeed reproduce the low-energy experimental data relating the charged fermion masses and mixings. Neutrino oscillation data can be consistently incorporated in the model, leading to the right-handed neutrino mass scale MR≃MG2/MPM_R \simeq M_G^2/M_P. This aim of this study was to investigate the effects of playing active video games on the heart rate of older adults, in comparison to the heart rate after common table recreational activity.     Exact Partition Function Zeros of a Polymer on a Simple-Cubic Lattice

    We study conformational transitions of a polymer on a simple-cubic lattice by calculating the zeros of the exact partition function, up to chain length 24. In the complex temperature plane, two loci of the partition function zeros are found for longer chains, suggesting the existence of both the coil-globule collapse transition and the melting-freezing transition. The locus corresponding to coil-globule transition clearly approaches the real axis as the chain length increases, and the transition temperature could be estimated by finite-size scaling. The form of the logarithmic correction to the scaling of the partition function zeros could also be obtained. The other locus does not show clear scaling behavior, but a supplementary analysis of the specific heat reveals a first-order-like pseudo-transition.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
