Pets as Sentinels of Human Exposure to Neurotoxic Metals
The idea that animals may be used as sentinels of environmental hazards
pending over humans and the associated public health implications is not a new one.
Nowadays pets are being used as bioindicators for the effects of environmental contaminants
in human populations. This is of paramount importance due to the large
increase in the worldwide distribution of synthetic chemicals, particularly in the
built environment. Companion animals share the habitat with humans being simultaneously
exposed to and suffering the same disease spectrum as their masters.
Moreover, their shorter latency periods (due to briefer lifespans) enable them to act
as early warning systems, allowing timely public health interventions. The rise on
ethical constraints on the use of animals and, consequently, on the sampling they
can be subjected to has led to the preferential use of noninvasive matrices, and in
this case we are looking into hair. This chapter focuses in three non-essential metals:
mercury, lead, and cadmium, due to their ubiquitous presence in the built environment
and their ability of affecting the mammal nervous system. There is a fairly
short amount of studies reporting the concentrations of these metals in pets’ hair,
particularly for cats. These studies are characterized, and the metal concentrations
corresponding to different parameters (e.g., age, sex, diet, rearing) are described in
order to provide the reader with a general vision on the use of this noninvasive
matrix on the studies conducted since the last two decades of the twentieth
century.publishe

obróbki cieplnej i cieplno-chemicznej jest ściśle
związany ze stosowaniem komputerowych metod

rosnące zainteresowanie programami komputerowymi
do projektowania i symulacji procesów obróbki cieplno-

and manufacturing accuracy of products, further advances
in the heat and thermochemical treatment technology
are closely connected with the use of computer-
-based computational methods. Consequently, in recent
years there has been growing interest in the computer
software for the design and simulation of thermochemical
treatment processes. A properly executed simulation
reduces the need for experimental test processes
and analyses of real samples, which in turn provides
measurable savings in time, energy, and cost required
for testing. Simulators used in heat treatment plants
for processing non-repetitive discrete manufacturing
processes or short-series productions are considered to
be particularly effective. The following article describes
a few tools available on the Polish market which have
been developed to assist the heat and thermochemical
treatment technology

Spawanie stopów protetycznych typu Co-Cr
This paper presents the techniques of joining metal denture elements, used in prosthetic dentistry: the traditional soldering technique with a gas burner and a new technique of welding with a laser beam; the aim of the study was to make a comparative assessment of the quality of the joints in view of the possibility of applying them in prosthetic structures. Fractographic examinations were conducted along with tensile strength and impact strength tests, and the quality of the joints was assessed compared to the solid metal. The experiments have shown that the metal elements used to make dentures, joined by the technique which employs a laser beam, have better strength properties than those achieved with a gas burner.W pracy przedstawiono stosowane w protetyce dentystycznej technologii zespalania metalowych elementów
Tool steel heat treatment in vacuum furnaces with gas quenching. Part 1
Stale narzędziowe stanowią podstawowy materiał do formowania wszystkich grup materiałów do produkcji narzędzi. Tool steels are the basic material for obtaining all the other material groups used in tool production. A properly designed and controlled cooling process exerts a fundamental influence on the final result of heat treatment, therefore determining the strength and practical applications of the given component. Modern devices and heat treatment techniques make it possible to efficiently heat treat large series of tool steels. Moreover, by restricting the number of time-consuming testing processes, simulators such as G-Quench Pro® allow for the creation of new treatment methods
Hot-working tool steels heat treatment in the light of the European and American standards
Ostateczne własności mechaniczne narzędzi determinuje
obróbka cieplna hartowania i odpuszczania. NIekiedy
wprowadza się dodatkowe procesy głębokiego wymrażania,
nakładania powłok CVD, PVD, lub azotowania.
Nieprawidłowości w procesie obróbki cieplnej (i cieplnochemicznej)
powodują szybkie zużycie, deformację, a nawet
zniszenie narzędzi oraz eksploatowanych elementów.
Trudności w zapewnieniu jakości narzędzi doprowadziły
do powstania stanadardów obróbki. Najbardziej znane i
rozpowszechnione opracowanie w tym zakresie, na którym
wzoruje się wiele branż, to wytyczne NADCA.Final mechanical properties of tools are determined by
heat treatment, which involves quenching and tempering.
Sometimes additional methods are included in the
process, such as deep freezing, CVP and PVD coatings,
and nitriding. Irregularities occurring during heat (and
thermochemical) treatment can result in rapid wear, deformation,
and even destruction of the tools and parts in
operation. Difficulties in ensuring quality of tools led to
the development of heat treatment standards. The NADCA
standards are the most popular and widely accepted
guidelines in the field, serving as inspiration to other branches
of industry
Vaccum carburizing and vaccum nitiriding of fuel injection nozzles made of hot work tool steel (type WCL H11)
The article describes the newest achievements in heat treatment of fuel injection nozzles made of hot work tool steel applied in diesel engines.
