Playing safe: Assessing the risk of sexual abuse to elite child athletes
Young athletes frequently suffer from being seen as athletes first and children second. This has consequences for their legal, civil and human rights as children (Kelly et al., 1995) and for the way in which sport organisations choose to intervene on their behalf to protect them from physical, psychological and sexual abuses (Brackenridge, 1994). Sport careers peak at different ages depending on the sport: in some, children as young as 12 or 13 may reach the highest levels of competitive performance; in others, full maturity as an athlete may come late into adulthood or even middle age. Recognition of this variation has given rise to the concept of âsport ageâ (Kirby, 1986) referring to sport-specific athlete development. This concept is of significance in helping to identify the developmental process in terms of athletic, rather than chronological, maturity. The risk of sexual abuse in sport, formerly ignored or denied, has now been documented in a number of studies, using both quantitative and qualitative methods (Kirby & Greaves, 1996; Brackenridge, 1997; Volkwein, 1996). Drawing on data from these studies and from the previous work on sport age and athletic maturation, this paper proposes a possible means of identifying and assessing relative risk of sexual abuse to elite young athletes in selected sports. Organic pollutants in sea-surface microlayer and aerosol in thecoastal environment of Leghornâ(Tyrrhenian Sea)
The levels of dissolved and particle-associated n-alkanes, alkylbenzenes, phthalates, PAHs, anionic surfactants and
surfactant fluorescent organic matter ŽSFOM. were measured in sea-surface microlayer ŽSML. and sub-surface water ŽSSL.
samples collected in the Leghorn marine environment in September and October 1999.
Nine stations, located in the Leghorn harbour and at increasing distances from the Port, were sampled three times on the
same day. At all the stations, SML concentrations of the selected organic compounds were significantly higher than SSL
values and the enrichment factors ŽEFsSML concentrationrSSL concentration. were greater in the particulate phase than
in the dissolved phase.
SML concentrations varied greatly among the sampling sites, the highest levels Žn-alkanes 3674 mgrl, phthalates 177
mgrl, total PAHs 226 mgrl. being found in the particulate phase in the Leghorn harbour.
To improve the knowledge on pollutant exchanges between sea-surface waters and atmosphere, the validity of spray drop
adsorption model ŽSDAM. was verified for SFOM, surface-active agents, such as phthalates, and compounds which can

A systematic assessment on COVIDâ19 preparedness and transition strategy in Bangladesh
Rationale, aims and objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has overpowered the most advanced health systems worldwide with thousands of daily deaths. The current study conducted a situation analysis on the pandemic preparedness of Bangladesh and provided recommendations on the transition to the new reality and gradual restoration of normalcy.
Method: A complex adaptive system (CAS) framework was theorized based on four structural dimensions obtained from the crisis and complexity theory to help evaluate the health system of Bangladesh. Data sourced from published reports from the government, nongovernmental organizations and mainstream media up to 15 June 2020 were used to conduct a qualitative analysis and visualize the spatial distribution of countrywide COVID-19 cases.
Results: The findings suggested that Bangladesh severely lacked the preparedness to tackle the spread of COVID-19 with both short- and long-term implications for health, the economy, and good governance. Absence of planning and coordination, disproportionate resource allocations, challenged infrastructure, adherence to bureaucratic delay,
lack of synchronized risk communication, failing leadership of concerned authorities and incoherent decision-making have led to a precarious situation that will have dire ramifications causing many uncertainties in the coming days.
Conclusions: Implementation of response protocols addressing the needs of the community and the stakeholders from the central level is urgently needed. The development of mechanisms for dynamic decision-making based on regular feedback and long-term planning for a smooth transition between the new reality and normalcy should also be urgently
addressed in Bangladesh
