Magnetocardiography with a modular spin-exchange relaxation free atomic magnetometer array
We present a portable four-channel atomic magnetometer array operating in the
spin exchange relaxation-free regime. The magnetometer array has several design
features intended to maximize its suitability for biomagnetic measurement,
specifically foetal magnetocardiography, such as a compact modular design, and
fibre coupled lasers. The modular design allows the independent positioning and
orientation of each magnetometer, in principle allowing for non-planar array
geometries. Using this array in a magnetically shielded room, we acquire adult
magnetocadiograms. These measurements were taken with a 6-11 fT Hz^(-1/2)
single-channel baseline sensitivity that is consistent with the independently
measured noise level of the magnetically shielded room.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
At what age should screening mammography be recommended for Asian women?
Although regular screening mammography has been suggested to be associated with improvements in the relative survival of breast cancer in recent years, the appropriate age to start screening mammography remains controversial. In November 2009, the United States Preventive Service Task Force published updated guidelines for breast cancer, which no longer support routine screening mammography for women aged 40–49 years, but instead, defer the choice of screening in that age group to the patient and physician. The age to begin screening differs between guidelines, including those from the Task Force, the American Cancer Society and the World Health Organization. It remains unclear how this discrepancy impacts patient survival, especially among certain subpopulations. Although the biological characteristics of breast cancer and peak age of incidence differ among different ethnic populations, there have been few reports that evaluate the starting age for screening mammography based on ethnicity. Here, we discuss the benefits and harm of screening mammography in the fifth decade, and re-evaluate the starting age for screening mammography taking ethnicity into account, focusing on the Asian population. Breast cancer incidence peaked in the fifth decade in Asian women, which has been thought to be due to a combination of biological and environmental factors. Previous reports suggest that Asian women in their 40s may receive more benefit and less harm from screening mammography than the age-matched non-Asian US population. Therefore, starting screening mammography at age 40 may be beneficial for women of Asian ethnicity in well-resourced countries, such as Japanese women who reside in Japan
Anomalous rotational-alignment in N=Z nuclei and residual neutron-proton interaction
Recent experiments have demonstrated that the rotational-alignment for the
nuclei in the mass-80 region is considerably delayed as compared to the
neighboring nuclei. We investigate whether this observation can be
understood by a known component of nuclear residual interactions. It is shown
that the quadrupole-pairing interaction, which explains many of the delays
known in rare-earth nuclei, does not produce the substantial delay observed for
these nuclei. However, the residual neutron-proton interaction which is
conjectured to be relevant for nuclei is shown to be quite important in

Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for -Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold
The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the
spin-density matrix elements for ,
and at forward production angles. A linearly polarized
photon beam at =1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of
mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant
nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is
visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent
production from deuterons. There is no strong -dependence, but some
dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density
matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the -channel

Anomalous Crossing Frequency in Odd Proton Nuclei
A generic explanation for the recently observed anomalous crossing
frequencies in odd proton rare earth nuclei is given. As an example, the proton
band in Ta is discussed in detail by using the
angular momentum projection theory. It is shown that the quadrupole pairing
interaction is decisive in delaying the crossing point and the changes in
crossing frequency along the isotope chain are due to the different neutron
shell fillings
Nuclear Clusters as a Probe for Expansion Flow in Heavy Ion Reactions at 10-15AGeV
A phase space coalescence description based on the Wigner-function method for
cluster formation in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The
momentum distributions of nuclear clusters d,t and He are predicted for central
Au(11.6AGeV)Au and Si(14.6AGeV)Si reactions in the framework of the RQMD
transport approach. Transverse expansion leads to a strong shoulder-arm shape
and different inverse slope parameters in the transverse spectra of nuclear
clusters deviating markedly from thermal distributions. A clear ``bounce-off''
event shape is seen: the averaged transverse flow velocities in the reaction
plane are for clusters larger than for protons. The cluster yields
--particularly at low at midrapidities-- and the in-plane (anti)flow of
clusters and pions change if suitably strong baryon potential interactions are
included. This allows to study the transient pressure at high density via the

The helicity amplitudes A and A for the D resonance obtained from the reaction}
The helicity dependence of the reaction
has been measured for the first time in the photon energy range from 550 to 790
MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a
4-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a
longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are predominantly
sensitive to the resonance and are used to determine its

Near-threshold Lambda(1520) production by the gamma p -> K+Lambda(1520) reaction at forward K+ angles
Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> K+
Lambda(1520) reaction have been measured with linearly polarized photon beams
at energies from the threshold to 2.4 GeV at 0.6<cos(theta)<1. A new bump
structure was found at W=2.11 GeV in the cross sections. The bump is not well
reproduced by theoretical calculations introducing a nucleon resonance with
J<=3/2. This result suggests that the bump might be produced by a nucleon
resonance possibly with J>=5/2 or by a new reaction process, for example an
interference effect with the phi photoproduction having a similar bump
