    Dynamic resource constrained multi-project scheduling problem with weighted earliness/tardiness costs

    In this study, a conceptual framework is given for the dynamic multi-project scheduling problem with weighted earliness/tardiness costs (DRCMPSPWET) and a mathematical programming formulation of the problem is provided. In DRCMPSPWET, a project arrives on top of an existing project portfolio and a due date has to be quoted for the new project while minimizing the costs of schedule changes. The objective function consists of the weighted earliness tardiness costs of the activities of the existing projects in the current baseline schedule plus a term that increases linearly with the anticipated completion time of the new project. An iterated local search based approach is developed for large instances of this problem. In order to analyze the performance and behavior of the proposed method, a new multi-project data set is created by controlling the total number of activities, the due date tightness, the due date range, the number of resource types, and the completion time factor in an instance. A series of computational experiments are carried out to test the performance of the local search approach. Exact solutions are provided for the small instances. The results indicate that the local search heuristic performs well in terms of both solution quality and solution time

    Optimal temporal logic control of autonomous vehicles

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityTemporal logics, such as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) and Computation Tree Logic (CTL), are extensions of propositional logic that can capture temporal relations. Even though temporal logics have been used in model checking of finite systems for quite some time, they have gained popularity as a means for specifying complex mission requirements in path planning and control synthesis problems only recently. This dissertation proposes and evaluates methods and algorithms for optimal path planning and control synthesis for autonomous vehicles where a high-level mission specification expressed in LTL (or a fragment of LTL) must be satisfied. In summary, after obtaining a discrete representation of the overall system, ideas and tools from formal verification and graph theory are leveraged to synthesize provably correct and optimal control strategies. The first part of this dissertation focuses on automatic planning of optimal paths for a group of robots that must satisfy a common high level mission specification. The effect of slight deviations in traveling times on the behavior of the team is analyzed and methods that are robust to bounded non-determinism in traveling times are proposed. The second part focuses on the case where a controllable agent is required to satisfy a high-level mission specification in the presence of other probabilistic agents that cannot be controlled. Efficient methods to synthesize control policies that maximize the probability of satisfaction of the mission specification are presented. The focus of the third part is the problem where an autonomous vehicle is required to satisfy a rich mission specification over service requests occurring at the regions of a partitioned environment. A receding horizon control strategy that makes use of the local information provided by the sensors on the vehicle in addition to the a priori information about the environment is presented. For all of the automatic planning and control synthesis problems that are considered, the proposed algorithms are implemented, evaluated, and validated through experiments and/or simulations

    Asteroseismology of the {\it Kepler} target KIC\,9204718

    The high precision data obtained by the {\it Kepler} satellite allows us to detect hybrid type pulsator candidates more accurately than the data obtained by ground-based observations. In this study, we present preliminary results on the new analysis of the {\it Kepler} light curve and high resolution spectroscopic observations of pulsating Am star KIC\,9204718.     A connection management protocol for promoting cooperation in Peer-to-Peer networks

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.The existence of a high degree of free riding in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks is an important threat that should be addressed while designing P2P protocols. In this paper we propose a connection-based solution that will help to reduce the free riding effects on a P2P network and discourage free riding. Our solution includes a novel P2P connection type and an adaptive connection management protocol that dynamically establishes and adapts a P2P network topology considering the contributions of peers. The aim of the protocol is to bring contributing peers closer to each other on the adapted topology and to push the free riders away from the contributors. In this way contribution is promoted and free riding is discouraged. Unlike some other proposals against free riding, our solution does not require any permanent identification of peers or a security infrastructure for maintaining a global reputation system. It is shown through simulation experiments that there is a significant improvement in performance for contributing peers in a network that applies our protocol. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.     A rule-based video database system architecture

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We propose a novel architecture for a video database system incorporating both spatio-temporal and semantic (keyword, event/activity and category-based) query facilities. The originality of our approach stems from the fact that we intend to provide full support for spatio-temporal, relative object-motion and similarity-based objecttrajectory queries by a rule-based system utilizing a knowledge-base while using an object-relational database to answer semantic-based queries. Our method of extracting and modeling spatio-temporal relations is also a unique one such that we segment video clips into shots using spatial relationships between objects in video frames rather than applying a traditional scene detection algorithm. The technique we use is simple, yet novel and powerful in terms of effectiveness and user query satisfaction: video clips are segmented into shots whenever the current set of relations between objects changes and the video frames, where these changes occur, are chosen as keyframes. The directional, topological and third-dimension relations used for shots are those of the keyframes selected to represent the shots and this information is kept, along with frame numbers of the keyframes, in a knowledge-base as Prolog facts. The system has a comprehensive set of inference rules to reduce the number of facts stored in the knowledge-base because a considerable number of facts, which otherwise would have to be stored explicitly, can be derived by rules with some extra effort.     Full-complex amplitude modulation with binary spatial light modulators

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Imperfections and nonrobust behavior of practical multilevel spatial light modulators (SLMs) degrade the performance of many proposed full-complex amplitude modulation schemes. We consider the use of more robust binary SLMs for this purpose. We propose a generic method, by which, out of K binary (or 1 bit) SLMs of size M × N, we effectively create a new 2K -level (or K bit) SLM of size M × N. The method is a generalization of the well-known concepts of bit plane representation and decomposition for ordinary gray scale digital images and relies on forming a properly weighted superposition of binary SLMs. When K is sufficiently large, the effective SLM can be regarded as a full-complex one. Our method is as efficient as possible from an information theoretical perspective. A 4f system is discussed as a possible optical implementation. This 4f system also provides a means for eliminating the undesirable higher diffraction orders. The components of the 4f system can easily be customized for different production technologies. © 2011 Optical Society of Americ

    Automatic detection of salient objects and spatial relations in videos for a video database system

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Multimedia databases have gained popularity due to rapidly growing quantities of multimedia data and the need to perform efficient indexing, retrieval and analysis of this data. One downside of multimedia databases is the necessity to process the data for feature extraction and labeling prior to storage and querying. Huge amount of data makes it impossible to complete this task manually. We propose a tool for the automatic detection and tracking of salient objects, and derivation of spatio-temporal relations between them in video. Our system aims to reduce the work for manual selection and labeling of objects significantly by detecting and tracking the salient objects, and hence, requiring to enter the label for each object only once within each shot instead of specifying the labels for each object in every frame they appear. This is also required as a first step in a fully-automatic video database management system in which the labeling should also be done automatically. The proposed framework covers a scalable architecture for video processing and stages of shot boundary detection, salient object detection and tracking, and knowledge-base construction for effective spatio-temporal object querying.
