Performance of Calves Receiving By-Products of Oil Palm during the Dry Season in an Integrated Pasture-Forestry System in Pré-Amazonic Regions of Brazil

The integrated farming and livestock-forestry constitutes a viable alternative for the advancement of sustainable agriculture through its influence on social and ecological processes. Silvopastoral systems are integrated systems characterised by the management of animals in an agricultural-forestry association. These systems aim to provide shade for animals, stabilize forage production for meat production and/or milk products, forestry and various other environmental services (Maurício et al. 2010). Despite the benefits mentioned, the seasonality in the production of tropical forages needs to be considered. An efficient way to avoid losses in animal production in the dry season is with the use of supplementation. By-products from agri-business with high nutritional value, are often not recovered, and are discarded, sometimes incorrectly harming the environment. The use of these residues in animal feed can reduce environmental impacts and the cost of animal feed. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a cattle silvopastoral system in the dry season, supplemented with babassu meal

New occurrence of B chromosomes in Partamonahelleri (Friese, 1900) (Hymenoptera, Meliponini)

Cytogenetic analyses of the stingless bee Partamona helleri collected in the state of Bahia, Northeast Brazil revealed the chromosome numbers n = 18 in the haploid males and 2n = 35 in the diploid females. All karyotypes displayed one large acrocentric B chromosome, which differs from the minute B chromosomes previously described in the populations from southeastern Brazil. Giemsa staining, C-banding and DAPI/CMA3 fluorochrome staining also revealed a remarkable interpopulational divergence regarding both the regular karyotype and the B chromosomes. The B chromosomes found in the samples from Jequié, Bahia, were entirely heterochromatic, while those found in Cravolândia, Bahia, displayed a euchromatic portion at the telomeric end of the long arm. CMA 3 labeling sites varied from seven to eight between the two localities in Bahia, due to the presence of an extra GC-rich block in the karyotype of the samples from Jequié. This is the first report of a large B chromosome in P. helleri and reveals the occurrence of a geographic differentiation within this species

Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and clinical monitoring of patients with juvenile and adult Pompe disease

Pompe disease (PD) is a potentially lethal illness involving irreversible muscle damage resulting from glycogen storage in muscle fiber and activation of autophagic pathways. A promising therapeutic perspective for PD is enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with the human recombinant enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (Myozyme (R)). The need to organize a diagnostic flowchart, systematize clinical follow-up, and establish new therapeutic recommendations has become vital, as ERT ensures greater patient longevity. A task force of experienced clinicians outlined a protocol for diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, genetic counseling, and rehabilitation for PD patients. The study was conducted under the coordination of REBREPOM, the Brazilian Network for Studies of PD. The meeting of these experts took place in October 2013, at L'Hotel Port Bay in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In August 2014, the text was reassessed and updated. Given the rarity of PD and limited high-impact publications, experts submitted their views.Inst Fernandes Figueira FIOCRUZ, Dept Med Genet, Rio De Janeiro, RJ, BrazilUniv Fed Fluminense, Dept Neurol & NeuroUPC, BR-22031171 Rio De Janeiro, RJ, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Neurol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Rio Grande do Norte, Dept Neurol, Caiaco, RN, BrazilClin Marrone, Porto Alegre, RS, BrazilUniv Cuiaba, Dept Neurol, Cuiaba, MT, BrazilUniv Sao Paulo, Dept Neurociencias, BR-14049 Ribeirao Preto, SP, BrazilHosp Base Dist Fed, Serv Neurol, Brasilia, DF, BrazilUniv Fed Parana, Serv Doencas Neuromusculares, BR-80060000 Curitiba, Parana, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Neurol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
