    Quantum dynamics of vortices in mesoscopic magnetic disks

    Model of quantum depinning of magnetic vortex cores from line defects in a disk geometry and under the application of an in-plane magnetic field has been developed within the framework of the Caldeira-Leggett theory. The corresponding instanton solutions are computed for several values of the magnetic field. Expressions for the crossover temperature Tc and for the depinning rate \Gamma(T) are obtained. Fitting of the theory parameters to experimental data is also presented.Comment: 8 page

    Classical and quantum theory of spin waves in the vortex state of a mesoscopic sub-micron magnetic disk has been developed with account of the finite mass density of the vortex. Oscillations of the vortex core resemble oscillations of a charged string in a potential well in the presence of the magnetic field. Conventional gyroscopic frequency appears as a gap in the spectrum of spin waves of the vortex. The mass of the vortex has been computed that agrees with experimental findings. Finite vortex mass generates a high-frequency branch of spin waves. Effects of the external magnetic field and dissipation have been addressed.Comment: 12 page

    Computational analysis of projectile impact resistance on aluminium (a356) curvilinear surface reinforced with carbon nanotubes (cnts) for applications in systems of protection

    Computational tests for ballistic impact energy absorption were developed on A356/CNTs composite material with the goal of estimating the improvement of the material’s mechanical properties by the contribution of the CNTs [1]. For the implementation of computational tests on the material exposed to projectile impact, A356/CNTs was configured by means of generalized Hooke’s model for anisotropic materials [1] and Johnson-Cook’s model was used to determine material failure and propagation of energy [2]. A curvilinear surface (semi-spheres on a plaque) with an area of 23x23 cm and thickness of 12 mm was elaborated to represent the composite material. The impact on surface was done with a 9 mm projectile and the surface was developed with 4.5 mm radium semi-spheres. It was used a 0.3% of nanotube insertions on the composite total volume. The results indicated the plaque stopped the impact without drilling. Incidence of damage to wearer, as well as possibility of composite material improvement and the diffusion/dispersion analysis on the curvilinear surface was also done

    Like a Virgin: Comparing Cross-Cultural Virginity

    Studies have been conducted about the social construct of virginity inside the United States and cross-culturally. Investigations comparing the United States with these other cultures are limited and focus on the United States as the ideal representation of virginity in men and women. I aim to expand upon the current research provided by adding a new perspective to the analysis. The objective of conducting this analysis is to provide a global perspective defining the connotations of virginity cross-culturally. This study focused on the cultural, religious, and societal impacts on virginity collected through qualitative methods in the cultures of Arab-Americans, Latinx-Americans, and Malawi villages. The concluding evidence supported the theory that although there are specific gender expectations tied to each culture’s version of virginity, in an overarching analysis, the core ideals are too similar to be ignored. Overall, all of the cultures represented in this study viewed women’s virginity as a gift and the women as sexually submissive to men. While male virginity was seen as a failure to men’s masculinity and the men themselves must be a modern day Casanova
