Reactive oxygen species induced structural alterations of substance P
Substance P (SP1-11) was exposed to a continuous flux of superoxide (
O
2
-
) or hydroxyl radicals (.OH) in a hypoxanthine (HX)/xanthine oxidase (86 mU) system in the presence of 1 mM deferoxamine and 40 mM D-mannitol or 50 μM FeCI3. 6H2O and 50 μM EDTA, respectively.
O
2
-
caused fragmentation between the Phe7 and Phe8, whereas .OH induced cleavage also between the Phe8 and Gly9. Reactive oxygen species H2O2 and HCIO did not cause fragmentation, but modification of the amino acid side chains and/or aggregation with altered hydrophobicity in reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography compared to native SP1-11. Furthermore, exposure of SP1-11 to phorbol myristate acetate preactivated neutrophils resuited in products similar to those observed upon exposure to superoxide or hydroxyl radicals in a cell-free HX/xanthine oxidase system. This study suggests that, in contrast to rigid proteins, fragmentation is relatively easily induced in a small peptide like SP1-11, perhaps due to strain on the peptide and t-carbon bonds caused by the movable, random coil configuration acquired by SP1-11 in an aqueous solution. Oxidative modification might modulate paracrine actions of SP1-11 at site of inflammation
Polarizing Tweets on Climate Change
We introduce a framework to analyze the conversation between two competing
groups of Twitter users, one who believe in the anthropogenic causes of climate
change (Believers) and a second who are skeptical (Disbelievers). As a case
study, we use Climate Change related tweets during the United Nation's (UN)
Climate Change Conference - COP24 (2018), Katowice, Poland. We find that both
Disbelievers and Believers talk within their group more than with the other
group; this is more so the case for Disbelievers than for Believers. The
Disbeliever messages focused more on attacking those personalities that believe
in the anthropogenic causes of climate change. On the other hand, Believer
messages focused on calls to combat climate change. We find that in both
Disbelievers and Believers bot-like accounts were equally active and that
unlike Believers, Disbelievers get their news from a concentrated number of
news sources
The Role of Deontic Logic in the Specification of Information Systems
In this paper we discuss the role that deontic logic plays in the specification of information systems, either because constraints on the systems directly concern norms or, and even more importantly, system constraints are considered ideal but violable (so-called `soft¿ constraints).\ud
To overcome the traditional problems with deontic logic (the so-called paradoxes), we first state the importance of distinguishing between ought-to-be and ought-to-do constraints and next focus on the most severe paradox, the so-called Chisholm paradox, involving contrary-to-duty norms. We present a multi-modal extension of standard deontic logic (SDL) to represent the ought-to-be version of the Chisholm set properly. For the ought-to-do variant we employ a reduction to dynamic logic, and show how the Chisholm set can be treated adequately in this setting. Finally we discuss a way of integrating both ought-to-be and ought-to-do reasoning, enabling one to draw conclusions from ought-to-be constraints to ought-to-do ones, and show by an example the use(fulness) of this
Expressing Belief Flow in Assertion Networks
Abstract. In the line of some earlier work done on belief dynamics, we propose an abstract model of belief propagation on a graph based on the methodology of the revision theory of truth. A modal language is developed for portraying the behavior of this model, and its expressiveness is discussed. We compare the proposal of this model as well as the language developed with some of the existing frameworks for modelling communication situations.
Asymmetric Combination of Logics is Functorial: A Survey
Asymmetric combination of logics is a formal process that develops the characteristic features of a specific logic on top of another one. Typical examples include the development of temporal, hybrid, and probabilistic dimensions over a given base logic. These examples are surveyed in the paper under a particular perspective—that this sort of combination of logics possesses a functorial nature. Such a view gives rise to several interesting questions. They range from the problem of combining translations (between logics), to that of ensuring property preservation along the process, and the way different asymmetric combinations can be related through appropriate natural transformations
The democratic interface: technology, political organization, and diverging patterns of electoral representation
Democracies are experiencing historic disruptions affecting how people engage with core institutions such as the press, civil society organizations, parties, and elections. These processes of citizen interaction with institutions operate as a democratic interface shaping self-government and the quality of public life. The electoral dimension of the interface is important, as its operation can affect all others. This analysis explores a growing left-right imbalance in the electoral connection between citizens, parties, elections, and government. This imbalance is due, in part, to divergent left-right preferences for political engagement, organization, and communication. Support on the right for clearer social rules and simpler moral, racial and nationalist agendas are compatible with hierarchical, leader-centered party organizations that compete more effectively in elections. Parties on the left currently face greater challenges engaging citizens due to the popular meta-ideology of diversity and inclusiveness and demands for direct or deliberative democracy. What we term connective parties are developing technologies to perform core organizational functions, and some have achieved electoral success. However, when connective parties on the left try to develop shared authority processes, online and offline, they face significant challenges competing with more conventionally organized parties on the right
