P4-compatible High-level Synthesis of Low Latency 100 Gb/s Streaming Packet Parsers in FPGAs
Packet parsing is a key step in SDN-aware devices. Packet parsers in SDN
networks need to be both reconfigurable and fast, to support the evolving
network protocols and the increasing multi-gigabit data rates. The combination
of packet processing languages with FPGAs seems to be the perfect match for
these requirements. In this work, we develop an open-source FPGA-based
configurable architecture for arbitrary packet parsing to be used in SDN
networks. We generate low latency and high-speed streaming packet parsers
directly from a packet processing program. Our architecture is pipelined and
entirely modeled using templated C++ classes. The pipeline layout is derived
from a parser graph that corresponds a P4 code after a series of graph
transformation rounds. The RTL code is generated from the C++ description using
Xilinx Vivado HLS and synthesized with Xilinx Vivado. Our architecture achieves
100 Gb/s data rate in a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA while reducing the latency by 45%
and the LUT usage by 40% compared to the state-of-the-art.Comment: Accepted for publication at the 26th ACM/SIGDA International

Fighting bisphenol a-induced male infertility: The power of antioxidants
Bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known endocrine disruptor present in epoxy resins and poly-carbonate plastics, negatively disturbs the male reproductive system affecting male fertility. In vivo studies showed that BPA exposure has deleterious effects on spermatogenesis by disturbing the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and inducing oxidative stress in testis. This compound seems to disrupt hormone signalling even at low concentrations, modifying the levels of inhibin B, oestradiol, and testosterone. The adverse effects on seminal parameters are mainly supported by studies based on urinary BPA concentration, showing a negative association between BPA levels and sperm concentration, motility, and sperm DNA damage. Recent studies explored potential approaches to treat or prevent BPA-induced testicular toxicity and male infertility. Since the effect of BPA on testicular cells and spermatozoa is associated with an increased production of reactive oxygen species, most of the pharmacological approaches are based on the use of natural or synthetic antioxidants. In this review, we briefly describe the effects of BPA on male reproductive health and discuss the use of antioxidants to prevent or revert the BPA-induced toxicity and infertility in men. This research was funded by Institute for Biomedicine—iBiMED, grant number UID/BIM/04501/2020 and by individual grant from FCT of the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Higher Education to J.S. Coexisting primary Sjögren’s syndrome and sarcoidosis: coincidence, mutually exclusive conditions or syndrome?
Herein, we describe a 44-year-old female diagnosed with histologically proven coexistence of primary Sjögren's syndrome and sarcoidosis with pulmonary and muscular involvement. The differential diagnosis may be difficult, but this is not an exceptional case, which highlights the need to critically revise the consideration of sarcoidosis as an exclusion for primary Sjögren's syndrome, as established in current classification criteria

Utilization of the Corncob Agro-Industrial Residue as a Potential Adsorbent in the Biosorption of Bisphenol-A
The presence of plastic waste in water bodies has led to a growing concern due to the impact on human health. Among the most important plastic additive molecules is bisphenol-A (BPA). On the other hand, micro-pollutant removal processes that make use of agro-industrial waste have aroused the interest of researchers. This is because the accumulation of lignocellulosic materials is also an environmental problem. The objective of this work is to use corncob agro-industrial residue (CC) as an adsorbent in the removal of BPA in aqueous matrix. The adsorption studies were carried out in reaction media containing the ground vegetable fiber and BPA solution in concentrations of 10, 25 and 50 mg L-1, as well as at pHs 3, 5, 7 and 9. Isotherms models and kinetic models were evaluated. The results showed that CC is a potent BPA adsorbent in aqueous solution, leading to about 90% of removal. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model and isotherm that best suited was the Lagmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 51.25 mg per gram of adsorbent fiber, after 20 min of contact. The thermogravimetric analysis allowed us to conclude that CC is a material resistant to high temperatures, due to the presence of a considerable amount of lignin. Finally, the best results of BPA removal efficiency by CC compared to activated carbon corroborate its high biosorption capacity
