Effect of Poisson ratio on cellular structure formation

Mechanically active cells in soft media act as force dipoles. The resulting elastic interactions are long-ranged and favor the formation of strings. We show analytically that due to screening, the effective interaction between strings decays exponentially, with a decay length determined only by geometry. Both for disordered and ordered arrangements of cells, we predict novel phase transitions from paraelastic to ferroelastic and anti-ferroelastic phases as a function of Poisson ratio.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures include

Lieb-Robinson bounds with dependence on interaction strengths

We propose new Lieb-Robinson bounds (bounds on the speed of propagation of information in quantum systems) with an explicit dependence on the interaction strengths of the Hamiltonian. For systems with more than two interactions it is found that the Lieb-Robinson speed is not always algebraic in the interaction strengths. We consider Hamiltonians with any finite number of bounded operators and also a certain class of unbounded operators. We obtain bounds and propagation speeds for quantum systems on lattices and also general graphs possessing a kind of homogeneity and isotropy. One area for which this formalism could be useful is the study of quantum phase transitions which occur when interactions strengths are varied.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, minor modification

    Abelian Duality

We show that on three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds without boundaries and with trivial first real de Rham cohomology group (and in no other dimensions) scalar field theory and Maxwell theory are equivalent: the ratio of the partition functions is given by the Ray-Singer torsion of the manifold. On the level of interaction with external currents, the equivalence persists provided there is a fixed relation between the charges and the currents.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, no figures, a reference added, submitted to Phys. M-Theory on (K3 X S^1)/Z_2

We analyze MM-theory compactified on (K3×S1)/Z2(K3\times S^1)/Z_2 where the Z2Z_2 changes the sign of the three form gauge field, acts on S1S^1 as a parity transformation and on K3 as an involution with eight fixed points preserving SU(2) holonomy. At a generic point in the moduli space the resulting theory has as its low energy limit N=1 supergravity theory in six dimensions with eight vector, nine tensor and twenty hypermultiplets. The gauge symmetry can be enhanced (e.g. to E8E_8) at special points in the moduli space. At other special points in the moduli space tensionless strings appear in the theory.Comment: LaTeX file, 11 page

    Scale dependence of cosmological backreaction

Due to the non-commutation of spatial averaging and temporal evolution, inhomogeneities and anisotropies (cosmic structures) influence the evolution of the averaged Universe via the cosmological backreaction mechanism. We study the backreaction effect as a function of averaging scale in a perturbative approach up to higher orders. We calculate the hierarchy of the critical scales, at which 10% effects show up from averaging at different orders. The dominant contribution comes from the averaged spatial curvature, observable up to scales of 200 Mpc. The cosmic variance of the local Hubble rate is 10% (5%) for spherical regions of radius 40 (60) Mpc. We compare our result to the one from Newtonian cosmology and Hubble Space Telescope Key Project data.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; v3: substantial modifications, new figure
