    Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in Central India

Few hybrids selected for high input farming and genetically-modified (GM) cotton, which is explicitly excluded in organic farming, are presently dominating the Indian seed market. In addition farmers have lost their traditional knowledge on seed production and hybrid seed needs to be purchased each season

    Control of wind-wave power on morphological shape of salt marsh margins

    Salt marshes are among the most common morphological features found in tidal landscapes and provide ecosystem services of primary ecological and economic importance. However, the continued rise in relative sea level and increasing anthropogenic pressures threaten the sustainability of these environments. The alarmingly high rates of salt marsh loss observed worldwide, mainly dictated by the lateral erosion of their margins, call for new insights into the mutual feedbacks among physical, biological, and morphological processes that take place at the critical interface between salt marshes and the adjoining tidal flats. We combined field measurements, remote sensing data, and numerical modeling to investigate the interplays between wind waves and the morphology, ecology, and planform evolution of salt marsh margins in the Venice Lagoon of Italy. Our results confirm the existence of a positive linear relationship between incoming wave power density and rates of salt marsh lateral retreat. In addition, we show that lateral erosion significantly decreases when halophytic vegetation colonizes the marsh margins, and that different erosion rates in vegetated margins are associated with different halophytes. High marsh cliffs and smooth shorelines are expected along rapidly eroding margins, whereas erosion rates are reduced in gently sloped, irregular edges facing shallow tidal flats that are typically exposed to low wind-energy conditions. By highlighting the relationships between the dynamics and functional forms of salt marsh margins, our results represent a critical step to address issues related to conservation and restoration of salt marsh ecosystems, especially in the face of changing environmental forcings

    Durch eine frühe Einbindung der Gemeinden und betroffener Bürger in die Projektentwicklung sowie deren Beteiligung an der Projektgesellschaft, kann die bei der Umsetzung von Infrastrukturprojekten häufig auftretende ablehnende Haltung in der Bevölkerung überwunden werden. Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass es sich um ein ökologisch verträgliches und zugleich wirtschaftliches Projekt handelt. Schlüssel für das Erreichen der regionalen Akzeptanz ist der Aufbau eines Vertrauensverhältnisses unter den Projektpartnern. Dies gelingt durch Transparenz, ergebnisoffene Diskussionen, Beteiligung an Entscheidungen und glaubwürdiges Bemühen, den gemeinsamen Projekterfolg über die Eigeninteressen zu stellen.With the early engagement of communities and stakeholders in the development of the project as well as their engagement in the project association the often reluctant positions of the public regarding the realization of infrastructure projects can be overcome. For this it is a requirement that the project is ecologically compliant and at the same time economically beneficial. Key to reaching regional acceptance is building mutual trust among the project partners. This is possible through transparency, open discussions, participation regarding decisions and a creditable effort to put the collected project success before self-interests

    Augmented reality navigation for spinal pedicle screw instrumentation using intraoperative 3D imaging

    BACKGROUND CONTEXT Due to recent developments in augmented reality with head-mounted devices, holograms of a surgical plan can be displayed directly in the surgeon's field of view. To the best of our knowledge, three dimensional (3D) intraoperative fluoroscopy has not been explored for the use with holographic navigation by head-mounted devices in spine surgery. PURPOSE To evaluate the surgical accuracy of holographic pedicle screw navigation by head-mounted device using 3D intraoperative fluoroscopy. STUDY DESIGN In this experimental cadaver study, the accuracy of surgical navigation using a head-mounted device was compared with navigation with a state-of-the-art pose-tracking system. METHODS Three lumbar cadaver spines were embedded in nontransparent agar gel, leaving only commonly visible anatomy in sight. Intraoperative registration of preoperative planning was achieved by 3D fluoroscopy and fiducial markers attached to lumbar vertebrae. Trackable custom-made drill sleeve guides enabled real-time navigation. In total, 20 K-wires were navigated into lumbar pedicles using AR-navigation, 10 K-wires by the state-of-the-art pose-tracking system. 3D models obtained from postexperimental CT scans were used to measure surgical accuracy. The other authors declare no conflict of interest concerning the contents of this study. No external funding was received for this study. RESULTS No significant difference in accuracy was measured between AR-navigated drillings and the gold standard with pose-tracking system with mean translational errors between entry points (3D vector distance; p=.85) of 3.4±1.6 mm compared with 3.2±2.0 mm, and mean angular errors between trajectories (3D angle; p=.30) of 4.3°±2.3° compared with 3.5°±1.4°. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, holographic navigation by use of a head-mounted device achieve accuracy comparable to the gold standard of high-end pose-tracking systems. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE These promising results could result in a new way of surgical navigation with minimal infrastructural requirements but now have to be confirmed in clinical studies

    Ability of Group IVB metallocene polyethers containing dienestrol to arrest the growth of selected cancer cell lines

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Monomeric Group IVB (Ti, Zr and Hf) metallocenes represent a new class of antitumor compounds. There is literature on the general biological activities of some organotin compounds. Unfortunately, there is little information with respect to the molecular level activity of these organotin compounds. We recently started focusing on the anti-cancer activity of organotin polymers that we had made for other purposes and as part of our platinum anti-cancer effort.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>For this study, we synthesized a new series of metallocene-containing compounds coupling the metallocene unit with dienestrol, a synthetic, nonsteroidal estrogen. This is part of our effort to couple known moieties that offer antitumor activity with biologically active units hoping to increase the biological activity of the combination. The materials were confirmed to be polymeric using light scattering photometry and the structural repeat unit was verified employing matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy results.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The polymers demonstrated the ability to suppress the growth of a series of tumor cell lines originating from breast, colon, prostrate, and lung cancers at concentrations generally lower than those required for inhibition of cell growth by the commonly used antitumor drug cisplatin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These drugs show great promise in vitro against a number of cancer cell lines and due to their polymeric nature will most likely be less toxic than currently used metal-containing drugs such as cisplatin. These drugs also offer several addition positive aspects. First, the reactants are commercially available so that additional synthetic steps are not needed. Second, synthesis of the polymer is rapid, occurring within about 15 seconds. Third, the interfacial synthetic system is already industrially employed in the synthesis of aromatic nylons and polycarbonates. Thus, the ability to synthesize large amounts of the drugs is straight forward.</p

    Rotavirus Rearranged Genomic RNA Segments Are Preferentially Packaged into Viruses Despite Not Conferring Selective Growth Advantage to Viruses

    The rotavirus (RV) genome consists of 11 double-stranded RNA segments. Sometimes, partial sequence duplication of an RNA segment leads to a rearranged RNA segment. To specify the impact of rearrangement, the replication efficiencies of human RV with rearranged segments 7, 11 or both were compared to these of the homologous human wild-type RV (wt-RV) and of the bovine wt-RV strain RF. As judged by viral growth curves, rotaviruses with a rearranged genome (r-RV) had no selective growth advantage over the homologous wt-RV. In contrast, r-RV were selected over wt-RV during competitive experiments (i.e mixed infections between r-RV and wt-RV followed by serial passages in cell culture). Moreover, when competitive experiments were performed between a human r-RV and the bovine wt-RV strain RF, which had a clear growth advantage, rearranged segments 7, 11 or both always segregated in viral progenies even when performing mixed infections at an MOI ratio of 1 r-RV to 100 wt-RV. Lastly, bovine reassortant viruses that had inherited a rearranged segment 7 from human r-RV were generated. Although substitution of wt by rearranged segment 7 did not result in any growth advantage, the rearranged segment was selected in the viral progenies resulting from mixed infections by bovine reassortant r-RV and wt-RV, even for an MOI ratio of 1 r-RV to 107 wt-RV. Lack of selective growth advantage of r-RV over wt-RV in cell culture suggests a mechanism of preferential packaging of the rearranged segments over their standard counterparts in the viral progeny

    Quantitative radiologic criteria for the diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis: a systematic literature review

    Background: Beside symptoms and clinical signs radiological findings are crucial in the diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). We investigate which quantitative radiological signs are described in the literature and which radilogical criteria are used to establish inclusion criteria in clincical studies evaluating different treatments in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods: A literature search was performed in Medline, Embase and the Cochrane library to identify papers reporting on radiological criteria to describe LSS and systematic reviews investigating the effects of different treatment modalities. Results: 25 studies reporting on radiological signs of LSS and four systematic reviews related to the evaluation of different treatments were found. Ten different parameters were identified to quantify lumbar spinal stenosis. Most often reported measures for central stenosis were antero-posterior diameter (< 10 mm) and cross-sectional area (< 70 mm2) of spinal canal. For lateral stenosis height and depth of the lateral recess, and for foraminal stenosis the foraminal diameter were typically used. Only four of 63 primary studies included in the systematic reviews reported on quantitative measures for defining inclusion criteria of patients in prognostic studies. Conclusions: There is a need for consensus on well-defined, unambiguous radiological criteria to define lumbar spinal stenosis in order to improve diagnostic accuracy and to formulate reliable inclusion criteria for clinical studies
