    Superconducting thick-films from a Y-Ba-Cu-O precursor

    Get PDF
We have prepared scree-printed films of the Y-Ba-Cu-O composuperconductiund starting from a spray-pyrolysis precursor powder. BeO ceramic substrates are confirmed to be inert with respect to the film up to about 100 C. Electrical properties of oxigen annealed films are investigated, evidencing excellent superconducting behaviour, both in terms of Tc (=91K) and Jc (>100 Asquarecm at 77K)

Ag-based thick-film front metallization of silicon solar cells

    Get PDF
The evolution of microstructure and electrical properties of silver-based thick-film metallizations of silicon solar cells prepared by infrared firing processes has been ivestigated. The performance of the cells are shown to be dependent on several dynamical and diffusive phenomena. In particular, the sintering of silver grains, silver diffusion in the glassand the flow of gas at the metal/silicon interface strongly affect important characteristics of the cells such as sheet and contatct resistivities and the adhesion of fingers and bus bars. The existance of an optimum value of the peak firing temperature is observed and explained in terms of competitive phenomena occuring at the metal/silicon interface. Moreover it is shown that IR firing treatments require aa careful consideration of the sequence of printing anf firing steps. The features of heat treatments performed in conveyor belt furnaces using Joule and infrared sources are compared

Size effects in ruthenium-based thick-film resistors: rutile vs. pyrochlore-based resistors

    Get PDF
The size effect, namely the change of sheet resistance, R, as a function of resistor length, has been investigated in layers whose conductive phase evoves from Pb-rich (Ru-deficient pyrochlores) to Pb2Ru2O6.5 and finally to RuO2 by increasing the firing temperature. It is found that Bi diffusion from the terminations is responsible for lower sheet resistance values in shorter resistors whatever the conductive phase is. On the contrary, Ag diffusion is responsible for lower sheet resistance values in shorte resistors only in the case of ruthenate conductive grains while the reverse is observed in RuO2-based layers. Size effect can be suppressed with Pt/Au-based terminations provided that Bi is contained and with Au-metallorganic-based contact provided that the peak firing temperature is not too high

Longitudinal and transversal piezoresistive response of granular metals

In this paper, we study the piezoresistive response and its anisotropy for a bond percolation model of granular metals. Both effective medium results and numerical Monte Carlo calculations of finite simple cubic networks show that the piezoresistive anisotropy is a strongly dependent function of bond probability p and of bond conductance distribution width \Delta g. We find that piezoresistive anisotropy is strongly suppressed as p is reduced and/or \Delta g is enhanced and that it vanishes at the percolation thresold p=p_c. We argue that a measurement of the piezoresistive anisotropy could be a sensitive tool to estimate critical metallic concentrations in real granular metals.Comment: 14 pages, 7 eps figure

Taming open/closed string duality with a Losev trick

    Get PDF
A target space string field theory formulation for open and closed B-model is provided by giving a Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization of the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory with off-shell gravity background. The target space expression for the coefficients of the holomorphic anomaly equation for open strings are obtained. Furthermore, open/closed string duality is proved from a judicious integration over the open string fields. In particular, by restriction to the case of independence on continuous open moduli, the shift formulas of [7] are reproduced and shown therefore to encode the data of a closed string dual.Comment: 22 pages, no figures; v.2 Refs. and a comment added

Decoupling A and B model in open string theory -- Topological adventures in the world of tadpoles

    Get PDF
In this paper we analyze the problem of tadpole cancellation in open topological strings. We prove that the inclusion of unorientable worldsheet diagrams guarantees a consistent decoupling of A and B model for open superstring amplitudes at all genera. This is proven by direct microscopic computation in Super Conformal Field Theory. For the B-model we explicitly calculate one loop amplitudes in terms of analytic Ray-Singer torsions of appropriate vector bundles and obtain that the decoupling corresponds to the cancellation of D-brane and orientifold charges. Local tadpole cancellation on the worldsheet then guarantees the decoupling at all loops. The holomorphic anomaly equations for open topological strings at one loop are also obtained and compared with the results of the Quillen formula

Engine oil acidity detection using solid state ion selective electrodes

Initial results from oil acidity measurements using thick film electrodes are presented. The results suggest that as the oil degrades, its pH/acidity follows a specific trend. Furthermore, an investigation into the feasibility of detecting changes in oil acidity (i.e. TAN value) using ion selective electrodes fabricated utilising thick film technology is presented. The thick-film (screen printing) technique is a decent means for the mass production of rugged, compact and disposable sensors as many such devices can be printed at the same time making them very cost effective to manufacture. Thick-Film ion selective and reference electrodes were fabricated, calibrated and tested in different oil samples varying its acidity. Ruthenium oxide (RuO2) pH sensitive electrodes were screen printed and were used against silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrodes as well as a commercial glass Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The potentiometric sets of electrodes were calibrated in pH 4, 7 and 10 buffers in a cyclic manner and the voltage was recorded using a high input impedance voltmete
