    Comparison of MUSIC and ESPRIT DOA Estimation algorithms for Wireless Communications

    This paper presents simulation of Angle of Arrival (AOA) estimation using the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) and Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique (ESPRIT) algorithms. We study the localization techniques using the wireless communication systems and there are several algorithms that have the ability in calculate the Direction of Arrival (DOA) of the incident signals. We investigate and compare MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms. The simulations indicate that the MUSIC algorithm is more accurate and stable compared to the ESPRIT algorithm

    Efficacy and tolerability of four antimalarial combinations in the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Senegal

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In view of the high level of chloroquine resistance in many countries, WHO has recommended the use of combination therapy with artemisinin derivatives in the treatment of uncomplicated malaria due to <it>Plasmodium falciparum</it>. Four antimalarial drug combinations, artesunate plus amodiaquine (Arsucam<sup>®</sup>), artesunate plus mefloquine (Artequin<sup>®</sup>), artemether plus lumefantrine (Coartem<sup>®</sup>; four doses and six doses), and amodiaquine plus sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine, were studied in five health districts in Senegal.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a descriptive, analytical, open, randomized study to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of these four antimalarial combinations in the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria using the 2002 WHO protocol.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All drug combinations demonstrated good efficacy. On day 28, all combinations resulted in an excellent clinical and parasitological response rate of 100% after correction for PCR results, except for the four-dose artemether-lumefantrine regimen (96.4%). Follow-up of approximately 10% of each treatment group on day 42 demonstrated an efficacy of 100%.</p> <p>The combinations were well tolerated clinically and biologically. No unexpected side-effect was observed and all side-effects disappeared at the end of treatment. No serious side-effect requiring premature termination of treatment was observed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The four combinations are effective and well-tolerated.</p

    Cabo Verde é um país ecologicamente frágil e de fracos recursos naturais. A satisfação das necessidades básicas do Homem exige que sejam bem definidas orientações estratégicas de aproveitamento e uma aplicação optimizada dos recursos naturais a favor do desenvolvimento de actividades económicas. Desde a independência, os sucessivos Governos Cabo-verdianos têm-se mostrado preocupados com a questão da preservação dos ecossistemas e com o enquadramento dos organismos vocacionados para a gestão ambiental. Na estratégia expressa nas Grandes Opções para do Desenvolvimento (2002), o ambiente é um dos temas mais importantes. Projecta-se uma sociedade dotada de um sentimento profundo para o ambiente e de uma consciência ecológica desenvolvida sendo as medidas de preservação encaradas de forma sistémica e transversal, pretendendo-se que sejam equitativas. O segundo Plano de Acção Nacional para o Ambiente (PANA II) constitui a concretização destas políticas e define as orientações estratégicas de aproveitamento dos recursos naturais bem como os seus efeitos sobre a gestão sustentável das actividades económicas. É um documento orientador de um processo continuo caracterizado por uma dinâmica própria e que nos próximos 10 anos (2004-2014), servirá de base de trabalho, permitindo um desenvolvimento Cabo-verdiano sustentável e harmonioso, garantindo um ambiente sadio. A elaboração do PANA II foi um processo complexo com o objectivo de assegurar o envolvimento dos parceiros e estabelecer as respectivas interligações entre os vários níveis. Incluído neste processo esteve a elaboração dos nove Planos Ambientais Inter-sectoriais (PAIS). Esses PAIS incluem as preocupações e planos de todos os ministérios e agências envolvidas em sub-sectores específicos. Assim resultarão em programas e actividades coerentes, transversais e com uma visão clara sobre o desenvolvimento sustentável. Este documento apresenta os resultados dos trabalhos e planificação dos parceiros no sector Ambiente e Agricultura.Governo dos Países Baixo

    Application of geographically-weighted regression analysis to assess risk factors for malaria hotspots in Keur Soce health and demographic surveillance site.

    BACKGROUND: In Senegal, considerable efforts have been made to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality during the last decade. This resulted in a marked decrease of malaria cases. With the decline of malaria cases, transmission has become sparse in most Senegalese health districts. This study investigated malaria hotspots in Keur Soce sites by using geographically-weighted regression. Because of the occurrence of hotspots, spatial modelling of malaria cases could have a considerable effect in disease surveillance. METHODS: This study explored and analysed the spatial relationships between malaria occurrence and socio-economic and environmental factors in small communities in Keur Soce, Senegal, using 6 months passive surveillance. Geographically-weighted regression was used to explore the spatial variability of relationships between malaria incidence or persistence and the selected socio-economic, and human predictors. A model comparison of between ordinary least square and geographically-weighted regression was also explored. Vector dataset (spatial) of the study area by village levels and statistical data (non-spatial) on malaria confirmed cases, socio-economic status (bed net use), population data (size of the household) and environmental factors (temperature, rain fall) were used in this exploratory analysis. ArcMap 10.2 and Stata 11 were used to perform malaria hotspots analysis. RESULTS: From Jun to December, a total of 408 confirmed malaria cases were notified. The explanatory variables-household size, housing materials, sleeping rooms, sheep and distance to breeding site returned significant t values of -0.25, 2.3, 4.39, 1.25 and 2.36, respectively. The OLS global model revealed that it explained about 70 % (adjusted R(2) = 0.70) of the variation in malaria occurrence with AIC = 756.23. The geographically-weighted regression of malaria hotspots resulted in coefficient intercept ranging from 1.89 to 6.22 with a median of 3.5. Large positive values are distributed mainly in the southeast of the district where hotspots are more accurate while low values are mainly found in the centre and in the north. CONCLUSION: Geographically-weighted regression and OLS showed important risks factors of malaria hotspots in Keur Soce. The outputs of such models can be a useful tool to understand occurrence of malaria hotspots in Senegal. An understanding of geographical variation and determination of the core areas of the disease may provide an explanation regarding possible proximal and distal contributors to malaria elimination in Senegal

    Morphology Evaluation of ZrO2 Dip Coating on Mild Steel and its Corrosion Performance in NaOH Solution

    In this work, the morphology of ZrO2 thin film from dip coating process on mild steel has been investigated. Mild steel was dip-coated on solution made of zirconium butoxide as a precursor, ethanol as solvent, acetylacetone as chelating agent and water for hydrolysis. Number of dipping was adjusted at 3, 5 and 7 times. The dipped sample then annealed at 350°C for two hours by adjusting the heating rate at 1°C/min respectively. The optical microscope showed that micro-cracks were observed on the surface of the coating with its concentration reduced as dipping sequence increased. The XRD result showed that annealing process can produce polycrystalline tetragonal-ZrO2. Meanwhile, SEM image showed that the thicknesses of the ZrO2 coatings were in between 400-600 nm. The corrosion resistance of uncoated and coated substrates was studied by polarization test through potentio-dynamic polarization curve at 1mV/s immersed in with 3.5% NaCl. The coating efficiency was improved as the number of layer dip coated increased, which showed improvement in corrosion protection

    The political unrest that started in Mali on the 21st of March 2012 has had a significant impact on access to safe water and sanitation for an estimated 1.9 million people. Like most development or non-humanitarian organisations, WaterAid Mali was forced to stop their water and sanitation interventions in northern target communities due to insecurity. In the south, water, sanitation and hygiene needs changed quickly, as a result of the large number of people migrating from the north. WaterAid Mali has adapted to these changes through reallocating resources, implementing new activities and internal capacity building. This paper will discuss the experiences of WaterAid Mali as well as the lessons learnt

    A follow-up on psychiatric symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorders in Tuareg refugees in Burkina Faso

    Introduction: The aim of this study was to carry out a 2-year follow-up of refugees in a camp in Burkina Faso who had been interviewed previously. We also aimed to verify whether the general conditions in which they lived (e.g., protection by international organizations and the conclusion of negotiations and new hope of returning to Mali and reunification with surviving family members) would affect their mental health state. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study repeated over time on a cohort of refugees. People living in the Subgandé camp who had participated in the first survey in 2012 were identified using informational chains and approached for follow-up. Those who agreed were interviewed using the Short Screening Scale for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the K6 scale, French versions, to measure general psychopathology and the level of impairment. Results: The second survey shows a dramatic decrease in psychopathological symptoms (positivity at K6 scale). Improvement was also conspicuous in the frequency of people with stress symptoms (positivity at Short Screening Scale for PTSD and simultaneous positivity to K6 scale). The frequency of people screened positive at the Short Screening Scale for PTSD had also decreased, but the level of improvement was not pronounced. Conclusion: Our findings confirm that when physical conditions improve, psychological symptoms can also improve. Although in the studied sample psychological factors, such as the hope of returning to their own land and thus the possibility of maintaining ethnic cohesion, may have played a role, future research carried out with a proper methodology and sufficient resources to identify protective factors is needed
