    A prospective comparative study of mini-open versus arthroscopic repair of supraspinatus tear

    Background: Supraspinatus tear is very common and more frequent among older individuals. Before the arthroscopy came into high demand, the open repair of supraspinatus tear was the preferred method of surgery. Recently, the mini-open technique of repair has also gained popularity because of certain factors like better repair strength, requires less expertise and facilitates early active mobilization. Still, the gold standard modality of repair is yet to be determined as both modalities are associated with good clinical outcomes and both have their pros and cons. We decided to compare functional and clinical outcomes of arthroscopic and mini-open repair.Methods: This was a randomised study with 32 patients in each group, aged between 18 and 60 years and all patients were cases of traumatic tear of Supraspinatus tendon. From January 2016 to March 2018, alternate patients were selected for mini-open and arthroscopic repair who fulfilled our criteria.Results: Follow up was done after 12 months postoperatively and the results were evaluated using University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder score. None left the study. In arthroscopic group, out of 32 patients, 28 got excellent or good result whereas in mini open out of 32 patients 27 achieved excellent or good outcome.Conclusions: Arthroscopic method provides better visualization of shoulder anatomy whereas Mini-open method has better repair strength and is affordable. The necessity of an arthroscopy set up might not be required for supraspinatus repair as both the modalities show similar functional and clinical outcomes, reducing the economic burden on the patients

    Superconducting Fluctuations and Anomalous Phonon Renormalization much above superconducting transition temperature in Ca4Al2O5.7Fe2As2

    Raman studies on Ca4Al2O5.7Fe2As2 superconductor in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K, covering the superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 28.3 K, reveal that the Raman mode at ~ 230 cm-1 shows a sharp jump in frequency by ~ 2 % and linewidth increases by ~ 175 % at To ~ 60 K. Below To, anomalous softening of the mode frequency and a large decrease by ~ 10 cm-1 in the linewidth is observed. These precursor effects at T0 (~ 2Tc) are attributed to significant superconducting fluctuations, possibly enhanced due to reduced dimensionality arising from weaked coupling between the well separated (~ 15 {\AA}) Fe-As layers in the unit cell. A large blue-shift of the mode frequency between 300 K to 60 K (~7%) indicates strong spin-phonon coupling in this superconductor.Comment: Iron based Superconducto

    Effect of Fe on the Martensitic Transition, Magnetic and Magnetocaloric Properties in Ni-Mn-In Melt-spun Ribbons

    The effect of Fe on the martensitic transitions, magnetic and inverse magnetocaloric effect in Ni47Mn40-xFexIn13 ribbons (x = 1, 2, 3 and 5) has been investigated. All the ribbon compositions under study have shown the presence of austenite phase at room temperature. The variation of martensitic transition with the increase in Fe-content is non-monotonic. The thermal hysteresis of the martensitic transition increased with the increase in Fe-content. The martensitic transitions shifted to lower temperatures in the presence of high magnetic fields. A maximum magnetic entropy change (∆SM) of 50 Jkg-1K-1 has been achieved in the Ni47Mn38Fe2In13 (x = 1) ribbon at 282 K for an applied field of 5 T

    Raman Evidence for Superconducting Gap and Spin-Phonon Coupling in Superconductor Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2

    Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition as well as magnetic transition at TSM ~ 140 K and superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization; in particular the phonon mode near 260 cm-1 shows hardening below Tc, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All the three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and Tc i.e phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory-based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (Tc < T < TSM) exhibits short-ranged stripe anti-ferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies

Rest matter is still unknown to us by any present experimental tools. this leads that detection of dark matter is one of the very challenging &amp; curios goal for experimental physicists. For the search of suitable dark matter candidates and for rear physics events, high Purity germanium detectors, Spherical gaseous chamber detector and few more hybrid-detectors are suitable for these purposes. We proposed that any suitable detector hosted under deep sea water will be more effective than the under ground or mountain caverns

    Monograph on quality standards of Viscum angulatum B. Heyne ex DC.

    The genus Viscum (Viscaceae) comprise of several species of hemi-parasitic plants with medicinal properties. Commonly known as mistletoes, these plants grow on other trees with the partial parasitic association. Viscum angulatum B.Heyne ex DC. is one such less explored leafless mistletoe of Asian countries with medicinal claims. In Ayurveda (Bandaka) and Siddha (Pulluri/Pulluruvi), many botanicals from mistletoe families have been attributed with medicinal properties. The objective of the current study is to develop a monograph on quality standards of V. angulatum occurring in high altitude hills of Western Ghats. Aerial parts of V. angulatum were collected and authenticated and preserved in FAA for microscopic studies and some quantity of the plant material was shade-dried and coarsely powdered. Successive extracts were subjected to chromatography and isolation - characterization of the major compounds. Leaf-less quadrangular stem was found to be a diagnostic macroscopic feature of this species. The preliminary phytochemical investigation of extracts showed presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, coumarins, flavonoids, phytosterols, triterpenoids, saponins and tannins. HPTLC fingerprint of n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts has been obtained for identification of extracts. The ethyl acetate extract yielded 10-hydroxyoleoside dimethyl ester which can be used as a marker compound for routine quality check of V. angulatum growing on Mussaenda hirsutissima. The set of data obtained in the present investigation can serve as a standard for the identification as well as further studies. These results on standards of this plant are the first report so far
